Internet usage among information technology users has expanded substantially, as have cybercrimes with potentially disastrous repercussions. Therefore, internet users have to employ the available security measures and policies during internet usage. Nowadays, University students make up a sizable portion of internet users. This study assesses the cybersecurity awareness among The Hashemite University students In terms of computer Usage. A questionnaire survey is used to assess students' cybersecurity knowledge while using their PCs and connecting to the internet, concentrating on their behaviors and use of security measures. © 2024 IEEE.

Various deep learning techniques have been employed to diagnose dental caries using X-ray images. In this study, we utilized deep learning models, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and transfer learning models such as Visual Geometry Group (VGG16), VGG19, ResNet50, and Inception V3, to identify dental caries in periapical radiographs. The traditional CNN model comprises three sets of 2D convolutional layers, followed by an activation layer, a max-pooling layer, a flatten layer, one dense layer, another activation layer, dropout, another dense layer, and a final activation layer. For the VGG models, ResNet50, and Inception V3, the top convolutional layers were frozen to prevent retraining of the model, with only the last layers trained to produce the required output. The accuracy achieved by CNN, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, and Inception V3 was 90%, 96%, 73%, 70%, and 73%, respectively. VGG16 exhibited the highest accuracy among the models. Hyperparameters were carefully selected using a grid search approach, and the results were validated using the Shuffle-Split-Cross (SSC) validation method. These findings underscore the effectiveness of transfer learning in analyzing medical images, particularly in the diagnosis of dental caries. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The amount of data generated daily grows tremendously in virtually all domains of science and industry, and its efficient storage, processing and analysis pose significant practical challenges nowadays. To automate the process of extracting useful insights from raw data, numerous supervised machine learning algorithms have been researched so far. They benefit from annotated training sets which are fed to the training routine which elaborates a model that is further deployed for a specific task. The process of capturing real-world data may lead to acquring noisy observations, ultimately affecting the models trained from such data. The impact of the label noise is, however, under-researched, and the robustness of classic learners against such noise remains unclear. We tackle this research gap and not only thoroughly investigate the classification capabilities of an array of widely-adopted machine learning models over a variety of contamination scenarios, but also suggest new metrics that could be utilized to quantify such models’ robustness. Our extensive computational experiments shed more light on the impact of training set contamination on the operational behavior of supervised learners. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This study explores the impact of the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) on predictive accuracy in student performance prediction using both linear (Logistic Regression, LR) and ensemble (Random Forest, RF) models. We compare the performance of these models, using a real-time dataset from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). While previous studies have examined these models separately, this research uniquely investigates the simultaneous application of SMOTE to both. Our results show that LR’s accuracy improves from 91% to 95% with SMOTE, while RF maintains a consistent 98% accuracy. These findings demonstrate that SMOTE significantly enhances the performance of linear models in handling imbalanced data, providing useful insights for curriculum development in higher education. This research contributes to the literature by guiding higher education institutions in selecting the most effective predictive models.

Fog computing is an emerging paradigm that supplies storage, computation, and networking resources between traditional cloud data centers and end devices. This article focuses on the resource provisioning problem in collaborative fog computing for multiple delay-sensitive users. Our goal is to implement a resource provisioning strategy for network operators to minimize the total monetary cost by considering the deadline and capacity constraints. Two scenarios are considered: unlimited-processor fog nodes (UPFN) and limited-processor fog nodes (LPFN). In either scenario, we prove that the resource provisioning problem is NP-hard. First, we consider the UPFN scenario that the processors of fog nodes are unlimited and users' requests can be ideally processed in parallel. Two algorithms are proposed which greedily delete fog nodes based on the local or global collaborative influences until there is no feasible provisioning to guarantee the deadline of users. Then we extend the resource provisioning problem to a more realistic and complicated scenario LPFN in which the scheduling delay cannot be ignored. Two types of tasks are considered. One is the arbitrarily divided tasks, and a near-optimal solution bounded by (Formula presented.) has been found. m is the number of fog nodes, and (Formula presented.) is the upper bound on the Lipschitz constant of the delay function. Another one is the application-driven tasks, and we propose a heuristic algorithm. Extensive experiments validate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms. © 2021 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Digital twins have a major potential to form a significant part of urban management in emergency planning, as they allow more efficient designing of the escape routes, better orientation in exceptional situations, and faster rescue intervention. Nevertheless, creating the twins still remains a largely manual effort, due to a lack of 3D-representations, which are available only in limited amounts for some new buildings. Thus, in this paper we aim to synthesize 3D information from commonly available 2D architectural floor plans. We propose two novel pixel-wise segmentation methods based on the MDA-Unet and MACU-Net architectures with improved skip connections, an attention mechanism, and a training objective together with a reconstruction part of the pipeline, which vectorizes the segmented plans to create a 3D model. The proposed methods are compared with two other state-of-the-art techniques and several benchmark datasets. On the commonly used CubiCasa benchmark dataset, our methods have achieved the mean F1 score of 0.86 over five examined classes, outperforming the other pixel-wise approaches tested. Fed-CVLC: Compressing Federated Learning Communications with Variable-Length Codes

In Federated Learning (FL) paradigm, a parameter server (PS) concurrently communicates with distributed participating clients for model collection, update aggregation, and model distribution over multiple rounds, without touching private data owned by individual clients. FL is appealing in preserving data privacy;yet the communication between the PS and scattered clients can be a severe bottleneck. Model compression algorithms, such as quantization and sparsification, have been suggested but they generally assume a fixed code length, which does not reflect the heterogeneity and variability of model updates. In this paper, through both analysis and experiments, we show strong evidences that variable-length is beneficial for compression in FL. We accordingly present Fed-CVLC (Federated Learning Compression with Variable-Length Codes), which fine-tunes the code length in response of the dynamics of model updates. We develop optimal tuning strategy that minimizes the loss function (equivalent to maximizing the model utility) subject to the budget for communication. We further demonstrate that Fed-CVLC is indeed a general compression design that bridges quantization and sparsification, with greater flexibility. Extensive experiments have been conducted with public datasets to demonstrate that Fed-CVLC remarkably outperforms state-of-the-art baselines, improving model utility by 1.50%-5.44%, or shrinking communication traffic by 16.67%-41.61%. Out of all cancers among female patients, breast cancer is on top in terms of prevalence. Many deep learning approaches have been investigated for the classification of histopathological images of breast cancer, however most tend to be either too complex or too large to adopt at a clinical level. In this study we propose a lightweight network, based on knowledge distillation, which performs almost the same as the teacher network but with significantly fewer parameters. Our student network consists of inverted residual blocks of MobileNetV2 and the ghost module. We performed our experiments on BreakHis, BACH and Kaggle breast cancer histopathological imaging datasets. The results show that different versions of our proposed lightweight student architecture perform with similar accuracy levels compared with the teacher network, while using significantly fewer parameters. © 2022 IEEE.

With the ongoing advancements in science and technology and the increasing research focus on cancer-related issues, there has been a proliferation of omics-related resources for in-depth analysis and exploration. This burgeoning volume and complexity of biological data have fostered the integration of machine-learning techniques into biology. As a result, numerous machine-learning strategies have been established to identify driver mutations. Yet, many of these strategies produce complex models, complicating comprehension and thereby clouding the impact of input features on the resulting predictions. Our analysis presented the CIXG framework, which integrates a driver gene prediction module using XGBoost with a causality interpretation module anchored on CXPlain. This architecture enables quantifying each input feature’s contribution to the prediction outcome and ensures precise predictions of driver genes. When benchmarked against the state-of-the-art (SOTA) method, CIXG demonstrated superior accuracy in pinpointing driver genes across pan-cancer studies and within the 32 specific cancer types. Importantly, our results underscored that mutation features chiefly influence CIXG’s predictive prowess, with additional support from other omics features.
