Over the past years, finger vein identification has gaining increasing attention in biometrics. It has many advantages as compared to other biometrics such as living-body identification, difficult to counterfeit because it resides underneath the finger skin and noninvasiveness. Finger vein feature extraction plays an important role in finger vein identification. The performance of finger vein identification is highly depending on the meaningful extracted features from feature extraction process. However, most of the works focus on how to extract the individual features and not presenting the individual characteristic of finger vein patterns with systematic representation. This paper proposed an improved scheme of finger vein feature extraction method by adopting discretization method. The extracted features will be represented systematically way in order to make classification task easier and increase the identification accuracy rate. The experimental result shows that the accuracy rate of identification of the proposed framework using Discretization is above 98.0%. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Internet of Things(IoT)and blockchain receive significant interest owing to their applicability in different application areas such as healthcare,finance,transportation,*** image security and privacy become a critical part of the healthcare sector where digital images and related patient details are communicated over the public *** paper presents a new wind driven optimization algorithm based medical image encryption(WDOA-MIE)technique for blockchain enabled IoT *** WDOA-MIE model involves three major processes namely data collection,image encryption,optimal key generation,and data ***,the medical images were captured from the patient using IoT ***,the captured images are encrypted using signcryption *** addition,for improving the performance of the signcryption technique,the optimal key generation procedure was applied by WDOA *** goal of the WDOA-MIE algorithm is to derive a fitness function dependent upon peak signal to noise ratio(PSNR).Upon successful encryption of images,the IoT devices transmit to the closest server for storing it in the blockchain *** performance of the presented method was analyzed utilizing the benchmark medical image *** security and the performance analysis determine that the presented technique offers better security with maximum PSNR of 60.7036 dB.

Post-hoc explanations are important for people to understand the predictions of explanation models. One class of methods in post-hoc explanation is the generation of counterfactuals, where a hypothetical example is obtained by perturbing the inputs to show how one could obtain a different prediction from the decision model. Counter-factual explanations should satisfy several properties: One is that counterfactuals generated under specific scenarios and constraints should be feasible for users, i.e., they should accommodate different causal constraints. The other is that it is more desirable for users to have a wider variety of viable examples, i.e., counterfactual diversity. To this end, we propose a parallelizable method based on gradient optimization. We partition the input feasible domains, perform counterfactual generation independently for each feasible domain, and then parallelize the counterfactual generation process for each feasible domain. Experimental results show that our approach effectively improves the diversity, sparsity, and proximity of the generated counterfactual instances on the public datasets Adult-Income, Lending-Club, German-Credit, and COMPAS compared to other models. © 2023 IEEE.

Environmental monitoring plays a crucial role in understanding the impact of human activities on our ecosystems. However, the cost and complexity of traditional monitoring systems often hinder widespread deployment, especially in resource-constrained regions. This research paper explores the feasibility and effectiveness of employing Arduino Internet of Things (IoT) modules as a low-cost alternative for environmental research monitoring. The study focuses on designing and implementing an Arduino-based environmental monitoring system capable of gathering real-time data on key environmental parameters, such as temperature, humidity, air quality, and soil moisture. The hardware setup comprises Arduino microcontrollers interfaced with a range of environmental sensors and connectivity modules for data transmission. To assess the system's reliability and accuracy, a series of field experiments were conducted in diverse environmental settings, including urban areas, agricultural zones, and natural habitats. The collected data was compared against measurements from conventional monitoring equipment to validate the Arduino-based system's performance. The research demonstrates that the Arduino IoT modules can effectively monitor and transmit environmental data with a reasonable level of accuracy and stability, making them suitable for various environmental research applications. The low-cost nature of Arduino components and the open-source ecosystem facilitate customization and scalability, enabling researchers and organizations to develop tailored monitoring solutions for specific environmental contexts. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges and limitations encountered during the deployment of Arduino-based monitoring systems, including power constraints, sensor calibration, and data processing techniques. This study proposes a new prairie dog optimization algorithm version called EPDO. This new version aims to address the issues of premature convergence and slow convergence that were observed in the original PDO algorithm. To improve performance, several modifications are introduced in EPDO. First, a dynamic opposite learning strategy is employed to increase the diversity of the population and prevent premature convergence. This strategy helps the algorithm avoid falling into local optima and promotes global optimization. Additionally, the Lévy dynamic random walk technique is utilized in EPDO. This modified Lévy flight with random walk reduces the algorithm’s running time for the test function’s ideal value, accelerating its convergence. The proposed approach is evaluated using 33 benchmark problems from CEC 2017 and compared against seven other comparative techniques: GWO, MFO, ALO, WOA, DA, SCA, and RSA. Numerical results demonstrate that EPDO produces good outcomes and performs well in solving benchmark problems. To further validate the results and assess reliability, the authors employ average rank tests, the measurement of alternatives, and ranking according to the compromise solution (MARCOS) method, as well as a convergence report of EPDO and other algorithms. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the EPDO algorithm is demonstrated by applying it to five design problems. The results indicate that EPDO achieves impressive outcomes and proves its capability to address practical issues. The algorithm performs well in solving benchmark and practical design problems, as supported by the numerical results and validation methods used in the study. © The Author(s) 2024.

Masked Language Modeling (MLM) and Image-Text Matching (ITM) are always used in fusion encoder to learn the joint representation of images and text. In existing methods, the masking strategy of MLM leads to the neglect of image details during the modeling process. Meanwhile, the sampling strategy of ITM struggles to consistently select high-difficulty hard negative instances, reducing the effectiveness of constraints. This leads to challenges in aligning fine-grained information in cross-modal retrieval. In response to this challenge, a fine-grained information alignment-based visual language model (FAM) is proposed in this paper. On one hand, the attribute-based masking strategy is employed in MLM, helping the model focus on the details of objects in images during modeling. On the other hand, the robust hard negative sample generation strategy provides challenging negative samples for ITM by altering the relationships between objects. This enables the model to align relationships between objects in different modalities and thus calibrates cross-modal retrieval. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the model in cross-modal retrieval tasks.

Stochastic modeling approaches have attracted many researchers to the field. However, fire hotspot detection suffers from not using a Markov chain quasi-Monte Carlo (MCQMC) as a forecasting methodology. This paper proposes improvements to the computational time by combining the strengths of the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. The proposed method can lead to more precise and stable results, particularly in problems with high-dimensional integration or complex probability distributions. The proposed method is applied to a case study of fire hotspot detection in Sarawak, Malaysia. The outcome of this study reveals that the MCQMC method is more computationally efficient, taking only 0.0746 seconds compared to MCMC’s 0.0914 seconds and QMC’s 0.0994 seconds. It is shown that the best option derived by the proposed method is effective in predicting fire hotspots and providing quick solutions to protect the environment and communities from forest fires. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Most English foreign language (EFL) studies focus solely on human beings. This research explores how edge computing can facilitate learning for all things. The XoT (Xducation of Things) framework was proposed to educate both human and all things. All things encompass two terms: AI-Agent and smartthings (covering physical and digital smart objects). At the core of this framework is Smart Question Answer Forwarding Mechanism (SQA-Forwarding), specifically designed to assist all things in building knowledge. To demonstrate this, the smartXoT environment was developed based on XoT framework, and its impacts on EFL learners was assessed. A quasi-experimental study involving 26 EFL learners, divided into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG), examined the differences in learning achievement of smartthings and EFL learners when using the smartXoT environment with/without SQA-Forwarding. Findings, on one hand, indicated that smartthings in the EG developed knowledge bases greater than those in the CG. On the other hand, the interaction between EFL learners and smartthings with SQA-Forwarding significantly improved learners' writing skills, with revisions playing a crucial role in enhancing writing quality. Thus, the XoT framework offers a novel and promising approach to educating both humans and all things. © 2013 IEEE.

Competitive Facility Location under Cross-Nested Logit Customer Choice Model: Hardness and Exact Approaches

We study the competitive facility location problem, where a firm aims to establish opening facilities in a market already occupied by competitors. In this problem, customer behavior is a crucial factor in making optimal location decisions. We explore a general class of customer choice models, known as the cross-nested logit model, which is recognized for its flexibility and generality in predicting people’s choice behavior. To explore the problem, we first demonstrate that it is NP-Hard, even when there is only one customer class. We further show that this hardness result is tight, as the facility location problem under any simpler choice models (such as the logit or nested logit) is polynomial-time solvable when there is one customer class. To tackle the resulting facility location problem, we demonstrate that the objective function under a general cross-nested structure is not concave. Interestingly, we show that by a change of variables, the objective function can be converted to a convex program (i.e., a maximization problem with a concave objective and convex constraints), enabling it to be solved to optimality via an outer-approximation algorithm. Extensive experiments show the efficiency of our approach and provide analyses on the benefits of using the cross-nested model in the facility location context. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Earthquakes, one of the greatest natural catastrophes, kill people and harm the economy. Heavy earthquakes and tsunamis may kill thousands and cost millions. Globally, predicting major earthquakes is important. Because earthquake prediction is difficult, researchers employ machine learning to improve forecasts. Many countries have early earthquake warning systems to save lives. Temporal rather than geographical characteristics dominated previous research. A similarity between earthquake and non-seismic signals makes real-time earthquake detection with cellphones or IoT devices problematic. This system may change entity interactions using ML and an IoT network. EEWS metrics are tracked using IoT. However, ML can assess these actions and determine smart city risk reduction and catastrophe management strategies. A deep learning approach for continuous earthquake forecasting utilising past seismic events is proposed. This research predicts earthquakes by position and depth using machine learning and deep learning. ConvLSTM, a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), extracts important waveform elements to make the classifier reliable in earthquake parameters.
