After a major earthquake, quick inspections are conducted to confirm buildings' safety immediately, but these inspections require experts in architectural engineering. In this study, earthquake response analyses are conducted on six-story and three-story steel-framed hospital buildings under 115 sets of earthquake ground motions of seismic intensity 6 or larger in the Japan Meteorological Agency scale to evaluate the maximum inter-story drift angle, residual deformation angle and damage degree of beam end, and a basic investigation of the emergency risk evaluation criteria is conducted based on the relation among these responses. The residual deformation angles judging the damage states are proposed. © 2025 Architectural Institute of Japan. All rights reserved.

This study presents a formulation method for implementing a material constitutive model using a memory surface in finite element analysis, capable of accurately reproducing the cyclic hardening and softening behavior of SN490B structural steel under constant strain amplitude. The formulation employs an implicit discretization method, specifically the backward Euler method. For solving plastic multipliers, elastic predictors and plastic correctors are used. Additionally, to ensure the convergence and stability of the nonlinear analysis, the derivation of the consistent tangent modulus tensor is demonstrated. The validity of the modeling method was verified through finite element analysis. © 2025 Architectural Institute of Japan. All rights reserved.

Expected and realized returns for dividend-targeting investors: CAPM-DDM conceptual framework using Australian REITs

In this study, a simple theory-based framework is developed to show the relationship between expected and realised returns on stocks by dividend-oriented investors. The framework shows that the expected returns of investors on individual securities cause changes in security prices in the actual market, and that the returns realised due to price changes are determinants of the expected returns in the following period. The framework uses the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and the dividend discount model (DDM). The study identifies the relationship between four indicators: β, which indicates the risk of fluctuations in individual securities relative to the market portfolio;expected returns;security prices;and realised returns. After presenting the framework, a fixed-effects regression analysis of the relationship between the four indicators presented in the framework is conducted using data from nine Australian REITs over a 20-year period from 2005 to 2024. The results of the empirical study show that the relationship between the four indicators is consistent with the framework. The novelty of this study lies in the fact that it combines two theories constructed from different perspectives—CAPM and DDM—and explicitly shows the relationship between expected and realised returns. © The Author(s) 2025.

“designing an effective educational toy” is a research project that emerged from a teaching and learning course designed to facilitate creative engagement both inside and outside the classroom at Wenzhou-Kean University in China. This research study examines the incorporation of design thinking concepts in the development of an educational toy by graphic design students. Utilising the ‘Double Diamond Model of design’, the research methodically progresses through the stages of observation, generation, prototyping, and testing to create a 3D letter-building set with the goal of improving children's educational experiences. The approach prioritises the integration of ideas through iterative design, taking safety into account, involving users, and focusing on instructional value. The key findings emphasise the effective implementation of design principles in developing a product that not only fulfils safety and educational requirements but also provides novel learning experiences. The essay continues by recommending the wider implementation of these concepts in the creation of educational toys to encourage improved learning outcomes and the development of skills in children. © The Author(s) 2025.

Smart housing: integrating machine learning in sustainable urban planning, interior design, and development

Smart housing, therefore, theoretically becomes very vital in this context of a smart city for sustainable urban planning and development. Machine learning technologies can be considered quite fundamental in enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and livability through incorporating into smart housing. However, rapid urbanization, population growth, traffic congestion, and energy management are huge problems. The main objective of this research work is to identify the feasibility of ML application in smart housing for resource management optimization, environmental sustainability, and public safety. It conducts an analysis on key factors like energy consumption, waste management, and public safety measures by applying machine learning’s efficient algorithms on the comprehensive dataset. There is a 20% decrease in total energy consumption, 15% increase in renewable source energy consumption, and a 25% efficiency improvement in waste management. In addition, public safety response times decreased by 30%. Also, ML models gave out very accurate predictions for power use, traffic patterns, and air quality that turned out with an average accuracy of 92%, thus saving 10% carbon emissions. The study clearly showed that ML will play a very key role in housing planning and interior design. The results bring out the importance of ML in tackling challenging urban issues and promoting better sustainable urban planning practices. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

This paper proposes a seismic design method using optimization for super high-rise building with dampers. The method involves four steps: 1) Specifying frame stiffness distribution and natural period by optimizing the elastic response of moment frame to Lv1 seismic motion. 2) Specifying frame energy absorption performance by optimizing the elastic-plastic response of moment frame to Lv2 seismic motion. 3) With step 1) and 2) result, specifying damping device placement using placement optimization. 4) Based on step 3), specifying the member section using section optimization. The method’s effectiveness is demonstrated by the result of analyzing a 100-meter-high building with oil dampers. © 2025 Architectural Institute of Japan. All rights reserved.

On measuring the change in historical city centres: an attempt at comparing human perception and deep learning through visual quality of street space

The quality of street space serves as a pivotal factor in overseeing the preservation, development, and utilization of historic heritage sites by individuals. This study proposes a novel method for quantifying changes in historical environments by assessing visual space quality. The model integrates artificial intelligence (AI)-based image segmentation of street views, representing an indirect form of human perception, with diverse user opinions based on evocation of facade images, reflecting direct human perception. The aim of the study is to evaluate visual space quality by comparing artificial intelligence and human perception within the proposed model, thereby harnessing the strengths of both approaches. The Atatürk High Street of Bursa City, situated within the Khans region, which inscribed on the UNESCO heritage list, was utilized as the study area to validate the method. Workstations, 50 m far away each other were created on Atatürk Street, and 360-degree panoramic images were obtained from these stations with Google Street View and action camera shots for the years 2014, 2018, 2020 and 2023. The obtained images were analyzed with deep learning-based semantic segmentation technique to monitor the changes in the visual quality indicators of greenery, openness, enclosure, imageability, walkability and complexity. The facade images of the workstations were shown to the experts and stakeholders with a survey application, and subjective-semi subjective change was determined over the same parameters. In the assessment of visual space quality, indicators such as openness, greenery, and enclosure, which predominantly encompass physical components, tend to yield objective and subjective results that closely align with each other. Conversely, discrepancies between objective and subjective results emerge for indicators such as imageability and complexity, wherein human emotions and perception exert significant influence. © The Author(s) 2025.

Metaheuristic machine learning for optimizing sustainable interior design: enhancing aesthetic and functional rehabilitation in housing projects

The paper investigates the amalgamation of LightGBM and Enhanced Colliding Bodies Optimization (ECBO) to establish a resilient framework for sustainable interior design optimization in residential projects. The main goal is to harmonize aesthetic appeal, functionality, and energy efficiency by applying modern machine learning and metaheuristic optimization methods. LightGBM was utilized for predictive modeling of essential design outcomes, achieving good prediction accuracy, with R-squared values of 0.892 for energy savings, 0.839 for functional enhancements, and 0.782 for aesthetics. Critical elements, including sustainable materials, project budget, and energy efficiency ratings, surfaced as pivotal influences on design improvements. The ECBO further refined these design elements, yielding a 28.13% enhancement in aesthetic evaluations, a 22.86% gain in functionality, a 41.56% advancement in energy savings, and a 29.17% decrease in carbon footprint. Compared to conventional algorithms such as Particle Swarm Optimization and Genetic Algorithm, the ECBO exhibited enhanced convergence velocity and solution efficacy. This study presents a thorough, data-centric methodology for sustainable interior design, offering an efficient framework for attaining many design objectives in housing rehabilitation. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The contemporary era has witnessed damage to the various dimensions of the sense of place in numerous historic and urban heritage sites,which has led to issues such as the disruption of urban life,neglected aspects of the urban poor,and *** study aims to identify the most important factors contributing to the sense of place in historic fabrics in the present day.A comparative analysis is carried out on the two neighborhoods of Imamzadeh Yahya in Tehran(a progressively dilapidated neighborhood),and Shah Abol-Ghasem in Yazd(with continuity of urban life).The assessment of the residents’sense of place in the two neighborhoods(n_(1)=271)and(n_(2)=267)was carried out using the questionnaire tool,and the contributing factors were *** results of the two cases were compared using a one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA).The findings showed that the sense of place in Imamzadeh Yahya,with a significant difference(P=0.00),is at a much lower level than in Shah ***,most of the factors affecting the sense of place in Imamzadeh Yahya were significantly different(P<0.05)and at a much lower level compared to Shah AbolGhasem,as assessed by the inhabitants.

Walls of change: the role of public art in shaping khartoum’s 2019 sit-in space

This article examines the transformative role of public art—particularly murals and graffiti—during Sudan’s 2018–2019 revolution, with a specific focus on the Khartoum sit-in outside the military headquarters. Grounded in theories of counter-publics, spatial production, and protest aesthetics, the study investigates how visual culture shaped the uprising’s symbolic, spatial, and political dynamics. Drawing on field surveys, semi-structured interviews, and visual questionnaires, it analyzes 89 artworks across six key sit-in locations. The findings reveal that public art operated as a powerful tool for political expression, collective memory, and cultural identity. More than that, it reconfigured urban space into a site of resistance and community engagement, inspiring a new way of thinking about public spaces. The study challenges assumptions of spontaneity and highlights the strategic placement of murals and graffiti in shaping protest geographies. This article positions Sudan’s revolutionary art within global urban and visual movements, emphasizing art’s power to effect meaningful change and contributing to understanding how creative interventions in urban spaces can catalyze political mobilization, reinforce collective identities, and transform contested sites into arenas of resistance and community engagement during periods of social upheaval. © The Author(s) 2025.
