Every design initiative begins with intention, and participatory design is no exception. Regrettably, prevailing discourse surrounding design intentions predominantly privileges the perspective of the researcher or designer, thus marginalising the design intentions articulated by local communities. Drawing from a participatory design research workshop focused on local health conducted within an Indigenous Dayak community in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, this paper critically examines the concept of niat (intention). It explores the participatory research process and the underlying intentions that guide it. Additionally, this paper presents argumentative reflections advocating for the recognition of local voices in participatory design as manifestations of localised design intentions. By prioritising the articulations of the community or participants, this approach facilitates a shift away from the exclusive consideration of intentions held by designers or researchers. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Some roads are more intelligent than others, based on the technological assistance roads which can provide their users. There are numerous state-of-the-art road technologies globally, some of which are in the conceptual stage, and others are now in use. These intelligent systems can help people who drive cars and the cars themselves. They can be used to improve traffic problems like congestion and can be instrumental in improving road safety. However, these innovations exist in isolation and are not interconnected. There is no unified document that describes the capabilities of these road technologies. A hierarchy is a method of organising information used by various researchers and organisations. Grouping the parts into several categories and creating a system of relationships between them provide a consistent framework for categorising information. Several hierarchies exist in the future transportation design and research, including the SAE classification of autonomous vehicles and the INFRAMIX classification of intelligent roads. We propose a hierarchy to classify smart roads, in which road segments can be methodically defined according to their intelligence. These levels can be given to specific network segments and give researchers a better understanding of smart roads. Based on the level of intelligence, smart roads can assist road users in safely navigating the road environment. This study investigates a novel method of instructing interior architecture students on building specifics pertaining to walls by utilizing the combination of virtual reality (VR) and game-based learning. The creation and application of a virtual reality game called "VR ConstructED," which aims to improve knowledge of wall construction methods, materials, and design consequences, is the study's focus. This project intends to improve students' understanding of wall-related construction elements and their applicability in real-world circumstances by utilizing the immersive and interactive properties of virtual reality technology in conjunction with gamification methods. Through a case study involving academic staff and students at Bahçeşehir University, the efficacy of this pedagogical strategy will be assessed. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collects quantitative data from surveys and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews. These questionnaires will evaluate the academic performance, contentment, and VR game participation of the students. The main goal is to clarify the advantages and difficulties of using virtual VR to teach construction features, such walls, so that curriculum designers and teachers may make informed decisions. Additionally, by illustrating how gamification and the integration of VR technology may greatly improve student engagement and academic achievement, this study hopes to contribute to the larger area of design education. The results of this study are anticipated to add to the body of knowledge in architectural education and stimulate more research into specific VR applications for design pedagogy. © 2024 Dechema e.V.. What are style guides? A style guide is a book of specifications used by publishers and printers to ensure that books and journal articles look professional, that they have a consistent layout and appearance, and that they accommodate their readers’ particular interests. Because professional organizations commonly have publishing components, most professional organizations have developed style guides of their own. Such organizations include, but are surely not limited to, the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Among book-length style guides, the most widely used style guides include The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) IEEE Standards Style Manual, and The Modern Language Association Style Guide (MLA). The Turabian Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses and Dissertations was produced by the University of Chicago Press to govern the production of graduate theses, and it has become widely accepted as a style guide for academic writing. The University of Chicago Press also publishes the authoritative Chicago Manual of Style. The academic disciplines serving the built environment are vast. The mechanical engineer may be involved in heat transfer and the insulation of buildings;the electrical engineer may be involved in lighting, wiring and solar energy;the civil engineer is essential to understand materials and their various stresses and strains, and the architect is the professional tasked with preparing the guiding design that brings the building together into a unifying, aesthetic whole. Each of these disciplines has its own unique style guide often set forth by the professional organizations that represent them. This study aims to build a complete visual transmission design optimization measurement system by integrating CAD (Computer-aided design) and DM (Data mining) technologies. Specifically, this article first uses CAD technology to model and quantitatively analyze the visual design elements accurately and then extracts the key factors and laws that affect the design effect from a large quantity of design data through DM. Finally, combining the results of CAD and DM, a scientific and effective optimization scheme is proposed, and experiments verify its feasibility and effectiveness. Experiments show that users often show higher stay time and more frequent interaction behavior when facing attractive design elements. Moreover, users have a positive attitude toward innovative and personalized design elements;Bright colors and dynamic visual effects are outstanding in attracting users’ attention. This study is expected to provide more accurate and efficient optimization measurement methods for visual transmission design and promote innovation and development in this field. © 2024, CAD Solutions, LLC. The article discusses public buildings in Slovakia and two important topics that are inseparably linked to public buildings as such – the process of their creation as a public investment and universal design. We explore the possibilities of fulfilling this principle in the Slovak context – by selecting an architectural design through public procurement in the form of a business competition or through an architectural design competition, and we compare these approaches. The second essential principle is that any public building must be accessible to everyone without restrictions, which means that it should be designed and constructed according to universal design principles. We analyse the legislative and normative tools of universal design in Slovakia, based on key connections to international standards. The article examines the phenomenon of the mentioned architectural design competitions. The example of good practice – both in terms of selecting public investment through an architectural design competition and in terms of solutions adhering to universal design principles – represents a case study of the New Town Hall in Leopoldov. The conclusion summarises the findings from the research and makes key recommendations for stakeholders involved in the process, policymakers, public investors, and architects. The research methods used include content analysis, statistical analysis, comparison, and case study. © 2024 The Authors.

This paper gathers the results of a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), employing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to show the most effective climate-adaptive strategies and their functional correlations and also potential research gaps. Additionally, it aims to identify various factors that influence vernacular-built environments. Over the past decade, new municipalism has emerged as an alternative form of politics emphasising radical democracy and community-based urban agendas. However, recent election results and challenges in navigating existing institutional frameworks worldwide have prompted a further examination of the potential and limitations of new municipalism in different contexts. This article evaluates the implementation of new municipal governance in Valparaíso, Chile, where a neighbourhood organisation backed by the local government clashed with a developer seeking to privatise and redevelop a critical ecological area called Pümpin Park. The city's significant public park shortage led to widespread social unrest, protests, and legal inquiries. Using firsthand accounts and official records, this study analyses how Valparaíso practices new municipalism by collaborating with grassroots movements to achieve the project's cancellation. However, it is still unclear whether the municipality's long-term urban development plans will continue to reflect a new municipalist agenda beyond this particular conflict. © The Author(s) 2023.

Augmented reality experience in an architectural design studio

Thanks to the developing technology, different methods and tools are used in architectural representation, and architects contribute to developing these tools. Architects can easily model their designs with computer technologies and even make them visible in the environment with augmented reality technologies. Also, it is thought that these technologies will become widespread in basic architectural education over time. This study conducted a practice at the undergraduate architecture level using augmented reality technology. Within the scope of the study, the predisposition of students who experience augmented reality technologies to new representation, gender, course period, familiarity with playing computer games, the effect of computer programs that they can use in their previous augmented reality experience and designs if any, and the correlation between them has been tried to be revealed with this study. In this context, a study was carried out with thirteen students in the architectural design studio. Students were expected to parametrically design indoor exhibition elements using Rhinoceros 3D software and the Grasshopper plugin in the study. Then, an experimental augmented reality study was conducted with the Fologram, in which the students transferred these virtual exhibition elements they designed to the real indoors and reshaped them according to the space. Afterwards, a questionnaire consisting of five independent and ten dependent variables was applied to the students. The survey results were analysed with the IBM SPSS Statistics program. Examining the role of concrete 3D printing for housing construction on Indigenous Reserves in Canada

Purpose: This research explores the role of concrete 3D printing (C3DP) in the development of culturally appropriate housing in Indigenous Reserves in Canada through the design, building and evaluation of the Star Lodge project located in the Siksika Nation of Alberta, Canada. The project aims to assess the potential of C3DP in addressing the escalating housing demands in Indigenous communities in Canada. design/methodology/approach: The research involved a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach, engaging Blackfoot Elders, Knowledge Keepers from the Siksika Nation, Siksika Housing and Nidus3D. Central to this was the design, build and documentation of the Star Lodge project to analyse the advantages and challenges, guided by weekly meetings and site visits. Findings: The project harnessed C3DP to streamline construction, enhance durability, reduce maintenance costs and enhance the energy performance of the homes. Notable time savings were achieved compared to conventional construction methods. Challenges included developing strategies to overcome extreme cold weather conditions, achieving a consistent concrete mix and integrating conventional construction elements such as drywall construction in interiors. The project served as a platform for collaboration and community participation, shaping the design and construction process while raising awareness of innovative construction techniques in the community. Originality/value: This study provides an evidence-based framework for the evaluation of C3DP technology by analysing the Star Lodge Project, the first C3DP project in Alberta and the largest of its kind in Canada. By addressing housing challenges in Indigenous communities, the research holds broader implications for sustainable development and Indigenous empowerment across Canada. © 2024, Mauricio Soto Rubio, Muhammad Fauzan Mirza, Mustafa Kagdi and Ahmad Ali Bisati.
