In this paper, we create three new statistical measures to characterize the spatial patterns and structure of firms and subsectors of industry. The new measures give a direct quantification of the tendency of subsectors to spatially agglomerate, the likelihood of cross-subsector spatial co-agglomeration, and the potential of leading and following behaviors between firms. Unlike the conventional measures which deduce possible agglomeration through deviations from the baseline distribution or distance density, our measures study agglomeration in terms of clustering and co-location behaviors to provide a clear physical picture on spatial agglomeration. With each measure quantifying one of the three different ways in which firms agglomerate spatially, their collective use provides a combined perspective on the agglomeration behavior and location choice of firms that is not available from the conventional measures. We employ this joint application of measures to show that Singapore maritime firms have a propensity to distribute themselves spatially in a manner that allows them to reap the benefits of localization externalities from the agglomeration economy.

Lorentzian geometry and variability reduction in airplane boarding: Slow passengers first outperforms random boarding

Airlines use different boarding policies to organize the queue of passengers waiting to enter the airplane. We analyze three policies in the many-passenger limit by a geometric representation of the queue position and row designation of each passenger, and apply a Lorentzian metric to calculate the total boarding time. The boarding time is governed by the time each passenger needs to clear the aisle, and the added time is determined by the aisle-clearing time distribution through an effective aisle-clearing time parameter. The non-organized queues under the common random boarding policy are characterized by large effective aisle-clearing time. We show that, subject to a mathematical assumption which we have verified by extensive numerical computations in all realistic cases, the average total boarding time is always reduced when slow passengers are separated from faster passengers and the slow group is allowed to enter the airplane first. This is a universal result that holds for any combination of the three main governing parameters: the ratio between effective aisle-clearing times of the fast and the slow group, the fraction of slow passenger, and the congestion of passengers in the aisle. Separation into groups based on aisle-clearing time allows for more synchronized seating, but the result is non-trivial, as the similar fast-first policy — where the two groups enter the airplane in reverse order — is inferior to random boarding for a range of parameter settings. The asymptotic results conform well with discrete-event simulations with realistic number of passengers, and both the slow-first and the fast-first policies have the ability to perform unboundedly better than random boarding. Parameters based on empirical data, with hand luggage as criteria for separating passengers into the slow group, give a 13% reduction in total boarding time for slow first compared to random boarding. The Open databases Integration for Materials design (OPTIMADE) application programming interface (API) empowers users with holistic access to a growing federation of databases, enhancing the accessibility and discoverability of materials and chemical data. Since the first release of the OPTIMADE specification (v1.0), the API has undergone significant development, leading to the v1.2 release, and has underpinned multiple scientific studies. In this work, we highlight the latest features of the API format, accompanying software tools, and provide an update on the implementation of OPTIMADE in contributing materials databases. We end by providing several use cases that demonstrate the utility of the OPTIMADE API in materials research that continue to drive its ongoing development. © 2024, CC BY.

Dolly Lane was known as one of the biggest brothel complex in Southeast Asia. The number of prostitutes increased every year such that in 2014 it reached 1.499 people. Based on many considerations, the areas was officially closed by the City Government of Surabaya. The closing of Dolly Lane has a great impact on economic and sosial of local community especially in five community units area (a.k.a. Rukun Warga), in Village Administrative Unit of Putat Jaya. The Surabaya City Goverment are calling for any contribution from many stakeholder including academician to revitalize community's social and economic condition after the closing. Some attempts have done to improve community's economy and social condition. However, the result still below target. In line with this, a study need to be done in order to know what strategy can be applied in order to revitalize local community's economic and social condition. To do so, a study that could capture current community social-economic condition will be required. For this reason, this study is conducted mainly aims to identify the existing condition of the community, including their problem and expectation. This paper proposes a directional noise suppressor with a specified constant beamwidth for directional interferences and diffuse noise. A directional gain is calculated based on interchannel phase difference and combined with a spectral gain commonly used in single-channel noise suppressors. The beamwidth can be specified as passband edges of the directional gain. In order to implement frequency-independent constant beamwidth, frequency-proportionate directional gains are defined for different frequencies as a constraint. Evaluation with signals recorded by a commercial PC demonstrates good agreement between the theoretical and the measured directivity. The signal-to-noise ratio improvement and the PESQ score for the enhanced signal are improved by 24:4 dB and 0:3 over a conventional noise suppressor. In a speech recognition scenario, the proposed directional noise suppressor outperforms both the conventional nondirectional noise suppressor and the conventional directional noise suppressor based on phase based T/F filtering with a negligible degradation in the word error rate for clean speech. © 2018 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

A wind-noise suppressor with SNR based wind-noise detection and speech-wind discrimination is proposed. Wind-noise detection is performed in each frame and frequency based on the power ratio of the noisy speech and an estimated stationary noise. The detection result is modified by speech presence likelihood representing spectral smoothness to eliminate speech components. To suppress wind noise with little speech distortion, spectral gains are made smaller in the frame and the frequency where wind-noise is detected. Subjective evaluation results show that the 5-grade MOS for the proposed wind-noise suppressor reaches 3:4 and is 0:56 higher than that by a conventional noise suppressor with a statistically significant difference. © 2018 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

In order to measure the dynamic instantaneous flow of the gear flowmeter, a volumetric gear flowmeter was used as the research object to simulate the measurement of the dynamic flow signal on the high pressure side. The flowmeter speed simulation experiment platform was built, and the inverter was driven by the PLC. When the inverter was activated, the inverter driven the motor to make the motor achieve different speeds, which was convenient for simulating the steady state experiment and dynamic experiment of the gear flowmeter. The program of measuring the signal of the dynamic flowmeter by using the virtual instrument was written. The response frequency of the dynamic gear flowmeter was 25 Hz in the experiment. Experiments show that this measurement method is highly accurate and highly flexible, and it is easy to measure dynamic flow.
