Defect engineering in metal oxides presents a promising approach for tailoring material properties. This strategy enhances gas sorption, catalysis, and control over key physical characteristics such as bandgap, magnetic behavior, and electrical conductivity. Despite its potential, the role of defect engineering in advancing metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas-sensing performance remains underexplored. This review introduces defect engineering strategies, emphasizing their applications in gas sensing. Gas sensors play a vital role in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, healthcare, and in improving energy efficiency. The demand for advanced gas sensors has never been more critical, given the need for real-time, accurate, and cost-effective detection of pollutant gases. MOS-based gas sensors are widely used in air quality monitoring, industrial safety, and health diagnostics. Vacancies and defect architectures in MOS have been widely studied for their role in sensing performance, as they fundamentally influence sensor efficiency. The effectiveness of MOS sensors largely depends on the type and concentration of defects. This review introduces vacancies and defects in MOS, followed by an in-depth discussion of defect types, factors influencing defect formation, and their role in charge transport. Additionally, it examines the correlation between elemental chemical properties and defect chemistry. Special attention is given to the defect chemistry of metal oxides, including TiO 2 , ZnO, Co 3 O 4 , ZrO 2 , WO 3 , and CeO 2 . It concludes with an examination of surface engineering methods for defect control to improve gas-sensing capabilities.

Installing smart meters to publish real-time electricity rates has been controversial while it might lead to privacy concerns. Dispatched rates include fine-grained data on aggregate electricity consumption in a zone and could potentially be used to infer a household's pattern of energy use or its occupancy. In this paper, we propose Blowfish privacy to protect the occupancy state of the houses connected to a smart grid. First, we introduce a Markov model of the relationship between electricity rate and electricity consumption. Next, we develop an algorithm that perturbs electricity rates before publishing them to ensure users' privacy. Last, the proposed algorithm is tested on data inspired by household occupancy models and its performance is compared to an alternative solution.

Background: Systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring Systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to Systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references. Memetic Algorithms (MAs) are a class of stochastic global search heuristics in which Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) - based approaches are combined usually with heuristic local searches. This hybridization is meant to reach solutions that would otherwise be unreachable by evolution or a local method alone. In this work, we propose three Local Search (LS) algorithms for hybridization with an existing Evolutionary Algorithm with Pareto ranking in order to define biological intelligence using the concepts of useful and utility and therefore to zoom on the basin of attraction of promising realistic solutions. Our experimental results with these memetic algorithms in the game of Checkers show how we can learn the organization of behaviors into paths of behaviors of different lengths and frequencies and then reveal the true nature of these behaviors.

The development of the Production Unit Performance Management Tool (PUPMT), a monitoring and diagnostic tool to select basic signals that have a significant impact on output KPIs, is based on a hierarchical analysis of key performance indicators presented in the ISO 22400 standard. The growing number of quantified signals, such as ambient temperature or even the frequency of vibrations makes decision support tools more intelligent. Moreover, they also include predictive analysis in addition to online presentation of the current state of resources. PUPMT tool allows identifying key events that have a significant impact on current or future benefit in production output. It also allows what-if type analysis, running the simulation of the impact of the proposed changes, and the results of this simulation depend on the effects of similar changes that occurred in the past in a given smart manufacturing environment. Thanks to the automatic identification of potential dependencies, the proposed solution adapts to the specifics of a given environment or even a selected production unit. The paper describes the most important methods featured in the tool. Specifically, it considers a signal classification method, a signal correlation analysis and selection of key factors affecting the efficiency of the production process. In order to verify the methods various tests were carried out to calculate and control of OEE index on 20 production units. Finally, we conclude current results and future research directions.

Complex mineral raw materials processing is an essential operation in modern industry. Innovative technologies help in constant improving of the efficiency and performance. The paper presents a design of electromagnetic mill, its technological structure and control system. In comparison to conventional solutions, the electromagnetic mill is a fully automated system. It operates in more effective way. The proper selection of the physical and process parameters of the system is crucial for efficiency of the process. The device stands out because of its low energy consumption. The air stream ratio model has been presented for the dry grinding and classification unit with the electromagnetic mill. The concept of the grinding system is described along with indirect measurement methodology. Supervisory control algorithm based on the model structure is derived. © 2017

The main goal of the paper is to study the equilibria of a nonlinear system, proving the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium point in the positive ortant. We also provide numerically tractable conditions (by using Linear Matrix Inequalities techniques) to check the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point. The subject of the article is a simulation of heat affected components of a device for deep drawing by extreme conditions in vacuum by high temperatures required for forming of crystallization containers made from thin molybdenum sheets. The simulation is focused on the distribution of heat in particular components in relation with their shape. Industrial facilities such as production and storage halls are a specific environment, which is usually characterized by a large usable area, which is managed in a way that brings together in the given area many functional zones for various purposes. Frequent changes in the management of industrial halls gives a need to change the lighting method. In such a situation, a lighting solution that enables the photometric characteristics of the luminaires to be adapted to variable development of the facility, covering not only the quantitative regulation of the luminous flux, but also the direction of its radiation into the environment, can be a helpful solution. The article presents an innovative concept of a luminaire, which makes it possible to change the light distribution without the need to replace optical elements. Simulation tests were carried out for the developed luminaire in order to check the possibility of obtaining the assumed distribution and shapes of light spots on the working plane. Thanks to the application of this solution in an environment where there is a need for frequent changes in the development of usable space requiring changes in lighting conditions, it is possible to dynamically adjust the characteristics of the installed system to new environmental conditions. © The Authors, published by EDP sciences, 2018.
