Modern, based on biomedical signals interfaces have become recently very complex, however the complexity does not always lead to increased functionality or usability. In particular, when it comes to handicapped users, the currently available solutions are far from satisfactory. In this paper an innovative approach for biomedical signals based interfaced with the implementation of an inexpensive gaming headset Emotiv EPOC was presented. The main goal was to design, and develop an intuitive and user-friendly interface based on implementation of various biomedical signals such as EEG or EMG. The project was primarily intended for handicapped users as a replacement for traditional interfaces such as keyboard or mouse, however its potential use was extended. The proposed system differs from the already existing interfaces mainly because of its versatility to work with various biomedical signals, thus enabling a single interface to be controlled with different devices. Initial investigation has proven that Emotiv EPOC headset could be applied as an inexpensive, easily available on the open market tool for Human-computer Interaction (HCI) systems for the gaming purpose.

The measurement accuracy of the estimation of the Doppler frequency and the signal phase difference in Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA) systems is investigated in this paper by taking into account the effect of the particle trajectory via the measurement volume and the different noise sources. Both the signal dependent (quantum shot) noise and the signal independent (thermal and dark current) noise are considered. The minimum achievable measurement uncertainty of the phase shift estimation for the signal independent noise is determined by employing the 2D model of the Doppler Burst Signal with the Gaussian envelope and compared with the performance of the correlation method. Additionally, the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) of the frequency estimation concerning the quantum shot noise is calculated. The numerical examples show the performance of the correlation method with various parameter configurations compared with the derived CRLB. The numerical results confirm the validity of the analysis in terms of the relative effect of the particle trajectory, relative measurement time, size of the volume and signal-to-noise ratio on the accuracy of the estimation.

This paper shows how control techniques, such as PID or generalized predictive control, can improve the performance of TCP/IP networks when dealing with congestion. Drop tail, or more sophisticated AQM techniques such as RED, perform worse than process control techniques. A comparison between the different methods in different working scenarios is analyzed. Two different GPC controllers are evaluated. One considers the model resulting from on-line identification and the other is the linearization of the non-linear model. © 2009 EUCA.

In this paper, an adaptive observer is proposed for the joint estimation of states and parameters of a fractional nonlinear system with external perturbations. The convergence of the proposed observer is derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) by using an indirect Lyapunov *** proposed adaptive observer is also robust against Lipschitz additive nonlinear uncertainty. The performance of the observer is illustrated through some examples including the chaotic Lorenz and Lü's systems. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Ambient Intelligence is an active research field that studies embed- ding computing elements into the environment - Weiser's concept of disap- pearing computer. Practical experiments are complex to orchestrate, because of the technical expertise required in hardware, software engineering and machine learning. The entry barrier for running such an experiment is very high, requiring coordinated e orts at all levels in a research team, and an actual laboratory with sensors in order to collect the data. In this work, we show how the power of Amazon's EC2 cloud can be lever- aged in conjunction with a record and replay system for sensor data in order to allow researchers from anywhere in the world to run such experiments. The software infrastructure used for the experiments is open-source and freely available at https: // github. com/ ami-lab/ AmI-Platform . This platform is used in the AmI Laboratory (EF 210) of the University Po- litehnica of Bucharest.

To engineer the factory of the future the paper argues for a reference model that is not necessary restricted to the control component, but integrates the physical and human components as well. This is due to the real need to accommodate the latest achievements in factory automation where the human is not merely playing a simple and clear role inside the control-loop, but is becoming a composite factor in a highly automated system ("man in the mesh"). The concept is demonstrated by instantiating the anthropocentric cyber-physical reference architecture for smart factories (ACPA4SF) in a concrete case study that needs to accommodate the ongoing researches from the SmartFactoryKL facility (e.g. augmented reality, mobile interaction technology, virtual training of human operators). © IFAC.

In this paper authors will expose a work developed with the aim to submit an educational innovation project proposal to a competitive call for Educational Innovation Projects 2013-2015 of the Education Advisory Service of the Basque Country University (UPV/EHU, Spain). This project is being carried out in the computer Structure and computer Architecture sub-module of the Degree in computer Management and Information Systems engineering of the University College of engineering of Vitoria-Gasteiz, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). The project is based on the active learning, more specifically, on cooperative learning. In this paper we have given deeper insight the dependencies between all the subjects belonging to the analyzed sub-module, which is composed of two subjects named computer Structure and computer Architecture. We have included in such analysis a previous subject named Principles of Digital Systems Design, which does not belong to that sub-module, but plays an important role in the acquisition of the knowledge and competencies of the two previously referenced subjects.

Nowadays parallel manipulators are used widely in bioengineering applications;this leads to many exciting expectations as well as challenges. The kinematic analysis of parallel manipulators with their differential kinematics yielding the Jacobian in a closed form is not a trivial task. In this paper a parallel manipulator based mobility assistive device called EJADII is analyzed to determine forward kinematics, inverse kinematics and closed-form Jacobian. An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is trained to estimate the Jacobian. This system would be useful when determination of the Jacobian in a closed-form is difficult to determine. The human motion during sit to stand captured by VICON experiment is used with two assisting scenarios to train and verify this system. computer simulations show relatively good results of the proposed system. © 2014 IEEE.

As ever more data is collected in the business processes of large enterprises, the decision makers need new business intelligence tools. Enterprise reporting tools have been available for some time, however, while reports aggregate business data, the large number of reports can become unmanageable. The European funded project Questor aims to create a revolutionary product that will eliminate the complexities inherent in the report management workflow. The final purpose is to make querying the report database as simple as addressing a question in natural language. This paper gives an overview over the concept of the Questor project, its software architecture, algorithms and results.

This paper introduces a systematic approach to synthesize linear parameter-varying (LPV) representations of nonlinear (NL) systems which are originally defined by control affine state-space representations. The conversion approach results in LPV state-space representations in the observable canonical form. Based on the relative degree concept of NL systems, the states of a given NL representation are transformed to new coordinates that provide its normal form. In the SISO case, all nonlinearities of the original system are embedded in one NL function which is factorized to construct the LPV form. An algorithms is proposed for this purpose. The resulting transformation yields an LPV model where the scheduling parameter depends on the derivatives of the inputs and outputs of the system. In addition, if the states of the NL model can be measured or estimated, then the procedure can be modified to provide LPV models scheduled by these states. Examples are included for illustration. © IFAC.
