A novel multi-cost function model-based finite-set predictive control method is presented for grid-side converters equipped with LCL filters. This approach aims to overcome the tedious tuning of weighting factors. In the method, the cost functions are established based on various state variables and their references. Then the control options are ranked based on their performance in each of the cost functions. This ranking score determines the selection of the optimal control action. The control method is validated in a low-cost custom Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) environment using model-based rapid-prototyping tools of Matlab/Simulink. It is well known that a wireless body area network (WBAN) is a special proposed wireless sensor network (WSN) that can assist in monitoring physiological signals for the evaluation and planning of patient treatment. One of the most challenging issues for WBANs is communication reliability, with acceptable communication efficiency and packet loss. To obtain such network characteristics, collision-free data transmission in networks of wireless sensor nodes is an interesting research problem. In this paper, the experiments of dynamic capabilities in several WBAN scenarios are focused, where the novelty and major contribution of our tests is that the effects of packet inter-arrival times, packet sizes, and the number of nodes deployed in the network, including human movements, indoor and outdoor environments, and transmitter and receiver positions, are all taken into consideration and evaluated. This is achieved by implementing the WBAN using IEEE 802.15.4 low-power sensor nodes. Experimental results illustrate the significant factors that impact the communication reliability of WBANs as measured by the packet delivery ratio (PDR). The experimental results show that the diverse environment testbed can affect network performance for WBAN data transmission. Our findings also show that the best network reliability needs to be set at more than 15 ms in packet interval time to achieve over 90% PDR for every test scenario. More details of the experimental results related to WBAN reliability obtained from all test cases are also discussed and summarized in the paper. To the best of our knowledge, our findings can be useful for users and researchers to consider the optimal point for WBAN setting and configuration to achieve the communication reliability requirements and also to deploy and develop a more reliable WBAN system. © 2023, The Author(s).

Sign Language Recognition (SLR) has garnered significant attention from researchers in recent years, particularly the intricate domain of Continuous Sign Language Recognition (CSLR), which presents heightened complexity compared to Isolated Sign Language Recognition (ISLR). One of the prominent challenges in CSLR pertains to accurately detecting the boundaries of isolated signs within a continuous video stream. Additionally, the reliance on handcrafted features in existing models poses a challenge to achieving optimal accuracy. To surmount these challenges, we propose a novel approach utilizing a Transformer-based model. Unlike traditional models, our approach focuses on enhancing accuracy while eliminating the need for handcrafted features. The Transformer model is employed for both ISLR and CSLR. The training process involves using isolated sign videos, where hand keypoint features extracted from the input video are enriched using the Transformer model. Subsequently, these enriched features are forwarded to the final classification layer. The trained model, coupled with a post-processing method, is then applied to detect isolated sign boundaries within continuous sign videos. The evaluation of our model is conducted on two distinct datasets, including both continuous signs and their corresponding isolated signs, demonstrates promising results. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

A comprehensive review of effective parameters to improve the performance of the Savonius turbine using a computational model and comparison with practical results

Amidst growing global concerns over climate change and escalating greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, the pursuit of renewable energy sources has become critical. This study focuses on harnessing hydropower using Savonius turbines, which are known for their efficiency in generating energy at lower flow rates. However, the intrinsic low efficiency of these turbines necessitates precise optimization tailored to specific river or channel conditions. In this research, we optimized the performance of Savonius turbines by analyzing key parameters such as the height-to-diameter ratio, blade twist, and the integration of multi-stage configurations with deflectors. Our findings reveal significant efficiency improvements through strategic modifications. Specifically, by reducing the height-to-diameter ratio from 1.2 to 0.8 and maintaining a Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) of 0.6, the power coefficient increased by 15%, from 0.33 to 0.38. Further optimization was achieved by adjusting the blade twist angle, with an increase in power coefficient up to an optimal angle of 45°, beyond which efficiency declined. Implementing a two-stage turbine setup with a 90-degree phase difference between stages further improved the power coefficient to 0.51 at the same TSR. Additionally, the use of deflectors, particularly at a 90° angle, significantly boosted the power coefficient, highlighting their effectiveness in optimizing water flow impact on the turbine. This comprehensive study not only advances the understanding of Savonius turbine optimization but also contributes to broader renewable energy applications. The research offers critical insights into sustainable hydroelectric power generation, providing practical solutions to enhance turbine performance for real-world applications. © 2024

The demand for improving the cyber security of Industry automation and Control Systems (IACS) is increasing significantly, and this increase causes a shortage of available security resources. In future more cyber security projects shall be made with less resources. For this reason, the efficiency of IACS cyber security projects is under constant pressure to be improved. One way of doing that is selecting the right target: paying more attention on the protection of impactful systems, where a lot can be protected with cyber security investments;and paying less attention on improving cyber security of systems with low impact. Priorities are not always obvious, and even at the first glance obvious priorities are sometimes misleading. The best way to have accurate and reliable information about the impact of a cyber security incident on a control system is having a certain level of understanding of the process and the role of the given system in that process. This research outlines an Impact Determination Exercise, which helps accurately estimate the possible impacts of an IACS cyber security incident by assessing the business process of a plant. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, variable renewable energy sources (RES) have been integrated into electricity generation to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. RES integration into conventional power systems diminishes rotational inertia, causing frequency fluctuation vulnerability. Following the rapid increase in electric vehicle (EV) sales, an EV fleet can contribute to an automatic frequency reserve service in balancing markets through an EV aggregator. However, the benefits of an EV aggregator directly depend on the energy availability of each EV in an aggregator, represented by the state-of-charge (SoC). In the wider literature, SoC estimation is conventionally calculated using the ampere-hour (Coulomb counting) method. However, this approach is vulnerable to estimation errors, such as initial SoC and power measurement errors, that can positively or negatively affect aggregator benefits. Although previous studies have examined several ways to maximize aggregator benefits, none has explored the effect of SoC estimation errors on aggregator benefits. Therefore, this study aims to preliminarily explore the influence of SoC estimation errors on aggregator benefits in the frequency containment reserve (FCR) market. The regulatory framework and the FCR market are modeled in the European context. The simulation results demonstrate that SoC estimation errors affected the FCR provision period and forced charging activation, resulting in positive and negative changes in EV aggregator revenues. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents progress in the development of a virtual commissioning environment for the validation of intelligent mechatronic systems with the following properties: 1) decentralised control architecture without a master controller, 2) open programmability based on the IEC 61499 standard, and 3) heterogeneous wired/wireless communication architecture. The presented environment is capable of instantiating in the cloud images of distributed control nodes connected to each other and with a plant simulation model. The environment aims to facilitate the verification of functional and non-functional requirements for complex automation systems composed of autonomous collaborating units. © 2024 IEEE.
