There is a growing concern that generative AI models will generate outputs closely resembling the copyrighted materials for which they are trained. This worry has intensified as the quality and complexity of generative models have immensely improved, and the availability of extensive datasets containing copyrighted material has expanded. Researchers are actively exploring strategies to mitigate the risk of generating infringing samples, with a recent line of work suggesting to employ techniques such as differential privacy and other forms of algorithmic stability to provide guarantees on the lack of infringing copying. In this work, we examine whether such algorithmic stability techniques are suitable to ensure the responsible use of generative models without inadvertently violating copyright laws. We argue that while these techniques aim to verify the presence of identifiable information in datasets, thus being privacy-oriented, copyright law aims to promote the use of original works for the benefit of society as a whole, provided that no unlicensed use of protected expression occurred. These fundamental differences between privacy and copyright must not be overlooked. In particular, we demonstrate that while algorithmic stability may be perceived as a practical tool to detect copying, such copying does not necessarily constitute copyright infringement. Therefore, if adopted as a standard for detecting an establishing copyright infringement, algorithmic stability may undermine the intended objectives of copyright law. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

Optimizing energy payment, user satisfaction, and self-sufficiency in flexibility-constrained smart home energy management: A multi-objective optimization approach

Smart homes have assumed a pivotal role within energy communities, offering sophisticated home energy management systems tailored to end-users preferences across technical, economic, social, and environmental facets. Amid the proliferation of smart appliances and advanced communication infrastructure, these domiciles play a crucial part in optimizing energy utilization and fostering sustainable practices. Notably, they create an enabling environment for the integration of renewable energy resources, but their widespread adoption may potentially challenge the flexibility of the overarching energy system. In this paper, a novel flexibility-constrained smart home energy management framework is proposed aiming at optimizing energy payment, end-user satisfaction, and end-user self-sufficiency preferences. Diverse technologies including Combined Heat and power (CHP) units, PhotoVoltaic (PV) generation units, electrical energy storage systems, and electric vehicles are considered in the smart home where the PV unit uncertainty is modeled by a scenario-based approach. The lexicographic technique as a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach is utilized to find an appropriate compromise among different targets. The proposed model is structured as a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) problem that is solved by the CPLEX solver in the GAMS environment. The results reveal a significant disparity in energy payments when the flexibility limit falls below 40 % of the predefined amount. The results demonstrate that altering the priority order of the objective functions has led to significant changes in energy payment, end-user satisfaction, and end-user self-sufficiency, with variations of 27.4 %, 100 %, and 56.64 %, respectively. © 2023 The Author(s)

An Overview of Recent Developments in ‘Big’ Boolean Equations

A task frequently encountered in digital circuit design is the solution of a two-valued Boolean equation of the form ℎ(X, Y, Z) = 1, where ℎ: B2κ+m+n → B2 and X, Y, and Z are binary vectors of lengths κ, m, and n, representing inputs, intermediary values, and outputs, respectively. The resultant of the suppression of the variables Y from this equation could be written in the form g(X, Z) = 1 where g: B2κ+n → B2. Typically, one needs to solve for Z in terms of X, and hence it is unavoidable to resort to ‘big’ Boolean algebras which are finite (atomic) Boolean algebras larger than the two-valued Boolean algebra. Other situations which necessitate ‘big’ Boolean-equation-solving are the so-called ‘elementary problems of digital circuit design,’ which entail five vector-Boolean quantities X, Y, Z, s and t that belong to B2κ, B2m, B2n, B2l , and B2l , respectively. Consider a ‘parent’ combinational network C of two (vectorial) inputs X and Y and a vectorial output t(X, Y), and assume that network C consists of two subnetworks A and B, where subnetwork A has the single (vectorial) input X and the (vectorial) output Z(X), while network B has the two vectorial inputs Z(X) and Y and the (vectorial) output s(Z, Y), which is exactly the same as the (vectorial) output t(X, Y) of network C. The above arrangement involves three vectorial Boolean functions, namely Z(X), s(Z, Y) and t(X, Y). Three problems arise when one utilizes the information that s(Z(X), Y) and t(X, Y) are equal, together with knowledge of two of the three functions X(X), s(Z, Y) and t(X, Y) in order to deduce the third function. Two of these problems are natural examples why ‘big’ Boolean-equation-solving is warranted. Methods of solving ‘big’ Boolean equations can be broadly classified as algebraic, tabular, numerical and map methods. The most prominent among these classes are the algebraic and map methods. The emerging virtual coupling technology aims to operate multiple train units in a Virtually Coupled Train Set(VCTS)at a minimal but safe *** guarantee collision avoidance,the safety distance should be calculated using the state-of-the-art space-time separation principle that separates the Emergency Braking(EB)trajectories of two successive units during the whole EB *** this case,the minimal safety distance is usually numerically calculated without an analytic ***,the constrained VCTS control problem is hard to address with space-time separation,which is still a gap in the existing *** solve this problem,we propose a Distributed Economic Model Predictive Control(DEMPC)approach with computation efficiency and theoretical ***,to alleviate the computation burden,we transform implicit safety constraints into explicitly linear ones,such that the optimal control problem in DEMPC is a quadratic programming problem that can be solved *** theoretical analysis,sufficient conditions are derived to guarantee the recursive feasibility and stability of DEMPC,employing compatibility constraints,tube techniques and terminal ingredient ***,we extend our approach with globally optimal and distributed online EB configuration methods to shorten the minimal distance among ***,experimental results demonstrate the performance and advantages of the proposed approaches.

PAS-SLAM: A Visual SLAM System for Planar Ambiguous Scenes

Visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) based on planar features has found widespread applications in fields such as environmental structure perception and augmented reality. However, current research faces challenges in accurately localizing and mapping in planar ambiguous scenes, primarily due to the poor accuracy of the employed planar features and data association methods. In this paper, we propose a visual SLAM system based on planar features designed for planar ambiguous scenes, encompassing planar processing, data association, and multi-constraint factor graph optimization. We introduce a planar processing strategy that integrates semantic information with planar features, extracting the edges and vertices of planes to be utilized in tasks such as plane selection, data association, and pose optimization. Next, we present an integrated data association strategy that combines plane parameters, semantic information, projection IoU (Intersection over Union), and non-parametric tests, achieving accurate and robust plane data association in planar ambiguous scenes. Finally, we design a set of multi-constraint factor graphs for camera pose optimization. Qualitative and quantitative experiments conducted on publicly available datasets demonstrate that our proposed system competes effectively in both accuracy and robustness in terms of map construction and camera localization compared to state-of-the-art methods. In the realm of stock market prediction, traditional supervised learning approaches often struggle with the vast and diverse nature of financial data, coupled with privacy concerns. This paper explores a novel methodology that combines unsupervised learning techniques with federated learning system to enhance stock market prediction models. We present a comprehensive system where local models, trained using unsupervised methods, contribute to a global model through federated aggregation. By leveraging federated learning, our approach allows multiple financial institutions to collaboratively train models on their decentralized data while preserving data privacy. This approach addresses the challenges of data heterogeneity and communication efficiency, providing a robust and scalable solution for advanced stock market forecasting. Our experiments demonstrate that integrating unsupervised learning with federated learning not only improves predictive accuracy but also enhances the model's ability to identify emerging market trends and anomalies. Finally, we compare our distributed data model with other machine learning models that use local data.

This paper describes a study on building a digital twin environment using point cloud data for mobile robots. A digital twin environment for mobile robots is a method to reproduce almost the same environment in a simulation space as if it were a twin, using data from an actual natural environment. In fact, in the development of mobile robots, experiments on public urban area are conducted, however, they are incredibly time-consuming and labor-intensive, so it would be helpful if a realistic simulation environment could be created. This study focuses on building a digital twin environment using point-cloud-data for mobile robots. In order to verify the effectiveness of this approach, we constructed the environment using data from a real mobile robot that has been driven. The navigation of the mobile robot was performed in the constructed simulation environment, and it was possible to realize a navigation run in the driving environment that was almost the same as the run of the real mobile robot.

In this research, nature inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithms: Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Techniques are formulated to tune optimal combinations of PID controller parameters for a quadruple tank level control application. The degree of relation of the best paring for both interacted control loops are justified by using Relative Gain Array (RGA) calculation. The overall system has been modeled and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink and performance evaluations has been done for time domain performance specifications of settling time, rise time, percentage overshoot and steady state error as comparison criterions of controllers. Accordingly, for the minimum phase case, GA tuned PID has settling time of 0.36sec and 0.31second for the tank 1 and tank 2 respectively. And PSO tuned PID controller has settling time of 0.96sec and 0.35sec for tank 1and tank 2 respectively. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of results reveals that there is fast dynamic response using GA PID relative to PSO PID even though the difference is not significant that may be due to stochastic feature of the metahueristic optimization algorithms. In summary, the optimal combination of PID controller algorithms’ parameters can give robust performance compared to PID controller designed using the classical approaches or manual tuning techniques.

Every day, innovative technologies emerge (5G networks, quantum computing) or change to existing technologies (big data, deep learning, blockchain, etc.). These technologies are expected to play an essential role on the Internet of Things (IoT) systems and applications. The IoT architecture generates substantial amounts of diverse types of data at extremely high speeds. All these generated data need to be secure. Scalable and secure data sharing is essential for all technological domains. Taking into consideration of blockchain technology today in data security, we can also think about a method to secure IoT data based on blockchain. In this paper, we proposed a blockchain method to secure data in an IoT architecture. We used EOS Blockchain for its scalability, flexibility and native enhanced throughput. Architecture in a concept of a smart home using blockchain is proposed. We combine Arduino, Raspberry Pi and sensors to create an IoT ecosystem for a smart home. Data are collected and stored in EOS blockchain for better security and integrity. We use Raspberry Pi as a client to get data in our developed blockchain. The real implementation is performed and the obtained results show us that we can send more than 500 data per second in our EOS blockchain. We discuss our results and saw that our blockchain method outperformed those in related works in terms of the number of data stored per millisecond in blockchain and the scalability. The proposed EOS blockchain pipeline for securing Smart Home data is provided at the end of this paper. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2022.
