Emergence of Web 2.0 technologies became a trigger for a revolution that goes far beyond the Web. For an average student Web was transformed from a steady, accessible source of information into a place of action and viable exchange of knowledge - a kind of a virtual classroom. Students started to look for experience and a touch to reality online, and this is where remote laboratories come in place. Such laboratories became an inevitable need in electrical and computer engineering courses dealing with microcomputers. This paper presents an overview of available architectures of microcomputer laboratories used today and addresses their most important limitations. Moreover, an important extension of such architecture is proposed allowing support for remote Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) laboratory. Different aspects of compatibility between microcomputer laboratories and WSNs have been examined to allow creation of an general extension model. With additional effort and adaptation, WSN nodes may serve remote clients as an economic and accessible microcomputer laboratory providing invaluable hands-on experience and a motivation for a course using it.

In this article we develop a systematic approach to enforce strong feasibility of probabilistically constrained stochastic model predictive control problems for linear discrete-time systems under affine disturbance feedback policies. Two approaches are presented, both of which capitalize and extend the machinery of invariant sets to a stochastic environment. The first approach employs an invariant set as a terminal constraint, whereas the second one constrains the first predicted state. Consequently, the second approach turns out to be completely independent of the policy in question and moreover it produces the largest feasible set amongst all admissible policies. As a result, a trade-off between computational complexity and performance can be found without compromising feasibility properties. Our results are demonstrated by means of two numerical examples.

The unknown input identification problem is studied for a class of nonlinear autonomous switched systems. It is proposed a robust observer which is capable of reconstructing the continuous state and the discrete state in the presence of unknown inputs. On the other hand, it is provided a method for identification of unknown inputs using the high frequency equivalent output injection. Simulation results support the proposed method.

This paper introduces a tailor-made development, supported in Matlab, to handle a set of instrumental observations associated to energy production technologies. Original sequence of values can be obtained by a filtered one and/or by its curve of trends. Accuracy knowledge of its time scale signal is not strictly necessary because instead of applying signal processing theory and methods to a window of data values, the statement is translated into statistic methods applied to a data time series. A Graphical User Interface Development Environment (GUIDE) integrates data loading, filters configuration, visualization facilities to validate filtering and saving data, resulting in a powerful pre-processing tool. This software platform solution will facilitate the application of such techniques as modelling and identification, monitoring chemical processes, building tools for control strategy decisions, and failure diagnosing, among others.

This article explores, through a case study, measures of energy efficiency in data processing centers. An analysis of this case demonstrates how the design criteria could improve the rate of consumption in IT centers, which is currently the second most contaminating industry on the planet, and is the responsible for 2% of CO2 emissions, surpassed only by the aeronautical industry. The present and future situation of IT center energy consumption and associated environmental effects is analyzed, and also looks at how state-of-the-art technology, correctly implemented, could ensure significant rationalization of data processing center energy consumption. Results of a frequency, time-frequency and correlational analysis of transformer core vibrations generated by magnetostriction are presented in the paper. Magnetostrictive vibrations constitute a source of acoustic interferential signals that can influence the proper interpretation of acoustic emission signals measured during partial discharge generation in paper-oil insulation of electric power transformers. The analysis considers magnetostrictive vibrations in various power transformers. In addition the influence of the compression force acting on transformer laminated core assembly on the achieved results will be determined. Results of the correlational analysis, build on the coherence function, for acoustic interferential signals invoked together with acoustic signal pulses emitted during surface partial discharges will be presented in the paper summary.

This paper discusses the problems connected with frequency analysis and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) of disturbances that can accompany the measurements of partial discharges in industrial conditions using the acoustic emission method. It presents different kinds of interfering signals that can deform the measured acoustic emission signals generated by partial discharges in electric power devices. It also presents the choices and characterizes the sources simulating disturbances in laboratory conditions. In addition, it includes the results of the measurements and frequency and MUSIC analyses of interfering signals in the form of power density spectra and of pseudo-spectrum and the values of the descriptors that characterize them. The summary part describes the influence of interfering signals on acoustic emission pulses generated by partial discharges.
