We present the first step towards a brain computer interface (BCI) for communication using real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The subject in the MR scanner sees a virtual keyboard and steers a cursor to select different letters that can be combined to create words. The cursor is moved to the left by activating the left hand, to the right by activating the right hand, down by activating the left toes and up by activating the right toes. To select a letter, the subject simply rests for a number of seconds. We can thus communicate with the subject in the scanner by for example showing questions that the subject can answer. Similar BCI for communication have been made with electroencephalography (EEG). In these implementations the subject for example focuses on a letter while different rows and columns of the virtual keyboard are flashing. The system then tries to detect if the correct letter is flashing or not. In our setup we instead classify the brain activity. Our system is not limited to a communication interface, but can be used for any interface where five degrees of freedom is necessary.

The paper deals with the decentralized control design strategy for generalized hybrid systems that consists of continuous - and discrete-time subsystems. Mathematical model of the process is traditionally associated with differential and difference equations typically derived from related physical laws. Hybrid large-scale systems are working in multiple operating modes where each mode is controlled by its own dynamic characteristics. Transitions between modes are triggered when some state variable exceeds the threshold (state events), after expiration of specified time period (time events) or by external inputs (entry events). Typical examples of hybrid control systems are many industrial processes in chemical, power and car industries in which process subsystems consist of continuous-time and discrete logic parts.
An adaptive methodology is introduced to identify the weights of a general Fuzzy Cognitive Network (FCN). The proposed scheme consists of two hierarchically structured individual identification tasks that are both imp...

The paper presents a case study on simulation modelling and analysis of a real production line operating in an electronics company. Simulation technique is applied to analyse the existing manufacturing system and detect factors with significant impact on its capacity. The analysis aims to improve the allocation of available production resources to maximize the average capacity of the system. A full factorial design has been applied as a simulation analysis tool. Then, a new system design is proposed to enhance the overall performance and is verified using a simulation model. The simulation system WITNESS has been used to complete this study.

The issue of delay identification for autonomous nonlinear systems is addressed in this work. Using sliding modes control methods it is first proven that the estimation goal can be fulfilled by finding the global norm minimizer of an infinite dimensional mapping. This result is then exploited to design, under different assumptions on the system's knowledge, both a finite-time and an asymptotically convergent identifier.

The wavelet transformation is a well known method in several engineering fields. In image processing and pattern recognition the wavelet transformation is used for the recognition of object shapes by deriving so called wavelet descriptors. In this context the Mexican Hat as well as the Haar function were used as mother wavelets. To derive wavelet descriptors the methods use a periodical angle function derived from the contour polygon. The angle function describes an object shape by calculating the angle changes along the object contour beginning from a given starting point. Since object shapes are described by polygons, the angle function is step-shaped and therefore it includes discontinuity at the existing polygon corners. This causes big changes of the Haar wavelet descriptors if the positions of the polygon corners change due to small changes of the object shape. Such changes can be caused at least by digitalization or binarization errors. The Mexican Hat wavelet descriptors are more adapted and suffer however from small changes. In this paper we present the results of the comparison between both methods in there accurateness of describing object shapes.

This paper presents a short-term prediction of the disturbance storm time (Dst) index using unscented Kalman filter. Joint and dual estimation methods are studied to examine an improvement of Dst index prediction by estimating model parameters and updating recursively. Comparison between these techniques and a fixed model parameter prediction are made in terms of root mean square error (rmse). It is found that joint and dual estimation methods give less rmse than state estimation alone for all Dst range, whereas state estimation alone shows better performance than joint and dual estimation for Dst below -80 nT.
