In this paper, a simple scheme for the detection of faults and changes in operating point for processes with well-known nonlinear state-space model will be described. The emphasis will be in the solution of practical problems. A linearized Kalman filter, the statistical t-Test and some decision rules are utilized in the scheme, which is validated in the case of a practical application to a laboratory turbo-generator.

This paper addresses the design of a selftuning controller for linear and non-linear dynamic systems. Modelling of nonlinear dynamic systems is realized using the expanded Voltera kernels by orthonormal Laguerre functions in a continuous and a discrete form. A predictive nonlinear control law is derived on the base of the Laguerre polynomials in a recursive form. The proposed control law has many benefits (simple use. easy handling of varying time delay and nonminimum phase behaviour, etc.). The method outlined in this paper presents new trends in design of control of nonlinear plants using selftuning DDC algorithms. The theoretical part of the paper presents several modifications of modelling and control algorithms design yielding new results with proof of convergency properties for Laguerre spectra estimation procedure. Practical problems solutions are involved.

In this paper the arrangement of several least-squares estimators using pseudo-recursive QR-factorization for the identification of single-input single-output (SISO-) systems especially in a noisy environment is presented. The proposed identification method is in its structure similar to that described in Astrom (1982), but due to the use of the numerically more stable pseudo-recursive QR-factorization instead of the ordinary recursive least-squares technique improved results are obtained. In most cases even for noisy processes two estimators (instead of three according to Astrom (1982)) are sufficient to get satisfactory results. One of the advantages of the proposed method is its greater applicability because the convergence is fast in cases of low noise.

The supervisory control problem in the discrete event dynamic systems (DEDS) is formulated using input-state-output system structure. A class of the Petri nets is defined enabling an effective and practically useful representation of the structural and dynamic properties of DEDS. A solution of the supervisory control using the Petri nets and the corresponding reachability graphs is presented and illustrated on an example.

A matrix framework is developed for modelling the workcell dynamics and designing digital controllers. The workcell functions are seperated from the controller, in the contrast to the Petri-net model where the workcell and the controller functions are undifferentiated This framework unites the industrial engineering approaches with the petri-net formulations and opens perspecrives for the sample-data control of flexible manufacturing systems. The military services are being moved in the direction of performance-based specifications and standards. They are being steered against dictating ''how to'' produce an item since such action forecloses on the ability to gain access to components or technology that may have a commercial equivalent. Why should the engineering community embrace the new approach? Aside from the obvious weight of it being approved policy, therefore currently mandated, it warrants examination because it is the correct approach at this time when applied to appropriate products. Military specifications and standards are to be displaced then, by acceptable alternative contractor design solutions. Industry bidders will be allowed to propose the particular design details, permitting procurement flexibility by contractually citing only system level or interface requirements, both physical and functional. Hopefully, this can broaden the industrial base and increase competition with reduced costs to follow. Conceptually, the approach appears both performance-sensible and cost-attractive (there are, of course, consequent risks) but how does implementation proceed? Is it possible to pursue the goals envisioned along paths that are not in themselves experimental? Can the American postulate, minimal loss of life and limb to U.S. military people, continue to be honored? Experience and track record elsewhere imply encouraging possibilities in select situations-useful prospects are identified and discussed in practical terms.

Decentralized adaptive control schemes using the principle of dominant subsystems are presented for time-varying nonlinear dynamic large-scale interconnected systems. Sufficient conditions for the existence of local decentralized adaptive control laws stabilizing a given large-scale system (LSS) are derived in terms of controller parameters for incompletely known composite systems. The approach proposed in this paper is applied to nonlinear stabilizing adaptive decentralized control (ADC) of multimachine power systems. The stability of the multimachine power systems with the ADC is illustrated by the simulation results for a two machine system.
