Recommendation systems are widely used in web services, such as social networks and e-commerce platforms, to serve personalized content to the users and, thus, enhance their experience. While personalization assists users in navigating through the available options, there have been growing concerns regarding its repercussions on the users and their opinions. Examples of negative impacts include the emergence of filter bubbles and the amplification of users' confirmation bias, which can cause opinion polarization and radicalization. In this paper, we study the impact of recommendation systems on users, both from a microscopic (i.e., at the level of individual users) and a macroscopic (i.e., at the level of a homogenous population) perspective. Specifically, we build on recent work on the interactions between opinion dynamics and recommendation systems to propose a model for this closed loop, which we then study both analytically and numerically. Among others, our analysis reveals that shifts in the opinions of individual users do not always align with shifts in the opinion distribution of the population. In particular, even in settings where the opinion distribution appears unaltered (e.g., measured via surveys across the population), the opinion of individual users might be significantly distorted by the recommendation system.

One-Sided Lipschitz (OSL) fractional order modeling is a top choice for solving the stabilization issue of nonlinear systems. Despite numerous studies on the subject, there remains a gap in understanding when it comes to fractional calculus. By providing a stabilizing strategy for a certain type of OSL fractional order nonlinear systems, this study fills the gap. A numerical example demonstrating the correctness of the suggested approach and demonstrating its efficacy for the tested class.

This paper investigates the stereographic projection of points along the Nyquist plots of single input single output (SISO) linear time invariant (LTI) systems subject to probabilistic uncertainty. At each frequency, there corresponds a complex-valued random variable with given probability distribution in the complex plane. The chordal distance between the stereographic projections of this complex value and the corresponding value for a nominal model, as per the well-known ν-Gap metric of Vinnicombe, is also a random quantity. The main result provides the cumulative density function (CDF) of the chordal distance at a given frequency. Such a stochastic distance framework opens up a fresh and a fertile research direction on probabilistic robust control theory. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The evolution of medical technology along with information and communication technologies has accelerated the development and operationalization of smart hospitals recently. Traditionally, such hospitals typically rely on cloud computing platforms for data treatment and processing. However, the expansion and popularization of Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) devices and constant data monitoring have resulted in massive amounts of generated data, leading to the overload of the cloud infrastructure. This results in high power consumption and latency in data transmission, which is critical especially in a healthcare environment where data flow must be particularly responsive. Thus, we proposed and designed a Raspberry Pi-based edge computing system to computer-intensive care unit (ICU) data at the periphery of the network to offload the hospital cloud platform. ICU medical data were simulated from the PhysioNet MIMIC III database and transferred to the edge platform for computation and identification of emergency cases that were then sent to the cloud level. We further discuss the current issues and prospects of edge computing in hospitals. © 2021 ECBIOS 2021. All rights reserved.

This paper treats the problem of 3D outdoor environment mapping using images acquired by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The main focus is on the generation of 3D model for large scale environments. In order to perform 3D model reconstruction and mapping from 2D aerial images we employed a Structure from Motion (SfM) based approach. The obtained results using this approach for different scenarios, the rubble field and village, are presented. The generated UAV 3D point cloud data are compared with the ground truth using the least square method, where the ground truth represents a reference model with high accuracy geodetic precision. The comparison of the 3D environment models with the rubble field and village scenarios and the ground truth data is also given.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more common in aviation. Predicting and estimating of UAV attitude are important aspects of the communication strategy. Autonomous UAVs' attitude estimate is a crucial component for controlling in flight mission. The attitude can take many forms such as Euler angles and Quaternion. This paper explains attitude estimation of UAV using Random Forest (RF) algorithm based on real flight data of Accelerations, Angular velocity, Magnetic Field, and GPS measurements for prediction current attitude angles (roll, pitch and yaw). The developed algorithm uses features that are derives from sensors measurements. The developed RF model results showed accurate prediction of UAVs attitude angles with small error values.

The Vehicle routing problem (VRP) is widely discussed in the literature. The goal of the VRP is to provide an optimized traversal of a graph. This paper presents a mixed graph traversal optimization for the VRP. The mixed graph is a graph that contains both directed and undirected edges. The problem to be solved is a parking space search problem in a mixed graph where, from an initial location a vehicle first navigates to a zone, where the selected edges are located, and plans the traversal driving through all selected edges, and returning to the start of the exploration so that the path is repeatable. The paper shows, that the parking space search problem in a mixed graph can be reduced to a travelling salesman problem (TSP), for which an ant colony optimization (ACO) is implemented, to provide a solution, that is minimizing the total cost of the mixed graph traversal.

In this paper various variables describing brain signals such as near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) on the Naive Bayesian Classifier were presented. Analysis of biomedical signals is a very challenging task - therefore the authors of this work decided to analyse two types of brain signals - EEG and NIRS, which have different features, character, nature and are differently prone to various artifacts occurrence. The applied classifiers can be applied for various features extraction and pattern comparisons, which is useful in diagnostic processes. © 2022 IEEE.

Smart spaces are a rapidly emerging concept in technology. They result from the convergence of various novel technologies, such as the Internet of Things, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, which allow for greater levels of automation and control within physical environments. The devices which are connected to the IoT network are equipped with sensors to acquire and exchange data. As a result, the IoT has transformed how we live, work, and play. However, the deployment in smart spaces is not always the best due to the issues arising from network node positioning. Therefore, we are investigating solutions to this problem with a novel approach which utilises Voronoi diagrams in conjunction with the algorithmic genetic technique. First, the initial positions of the IoT nodes will be determined by simulating a homogeneous Poisson point process in the smart space environment. Then, after dividing the area into the Voronoi cells, the genetic algorithm will optimise the position towards achieving full network coverage within the smart space. Experimental results prove the 100% network coverage within the specified area. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper explores the impact of the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) presence on distribution grid operations, highlighting the challenges they present to conventional pricing strategies due to their dual role as power consumers and suppliers, coupled with their energy storage capabilities. We propose an advanced real-time pricing model for the electricity market, employing a novel distributed bilevel optimization framework. This framework distinguishes between the distribution system operator (DSO) at the upper level and the EVs at the lower level, each aiming to optimize profit margins. The optimization includes power flow constraints at the upper level to ensure efficient operation within safe system limits, while model predictive control (MPC) is used to optimize lower-level EV responses. Additionally, we provide a rigorous convergence analysis of the proposed bilevel optimization method. Detailed convergence studies and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm.
