Nowadays, different systems and applications secure personal data using the person's biometric features. Face, fingerprint, hand geometry, palm print, iris, and voice signatures are examples of biometric traits. This paper presents a fuzzy enhancement technique for generating high-contrast and clear face images. Since images are captured in various settings, the output images may have poor quality and low contrast. Evaluation metrics such as entropy, spectral entropy, contrast, average gradient and edge magnitude are used for measuring the performance of the proposed technique. The obtained results are compared with those of the recent enhancement techniques. © 2021 IEEE.

In this paper, a comprehensive investigation of the performance evaluation and validation of a single-phase asynchronous motor pump system coupled with a photovoltaic (PV) power source is presented. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of this configuration for pumping applications. The RTLAB platform, which enables real-time simulation and emulation of dynamic systems, includes important components, such as the use of a single-phase asynchronous motor as the pump's power source, the incorporation of a PV system to supply renewable energy, and the use of RTLAB for real-time validation. Through rigorous simulation and experimentation, the motor response performance, such as speed, torque, and current response, was analyzed under varying solar irradiance and load conditions. In addition, the PV power and DC bus voltage were supervised after motor driving. This research fills the knowledge gap between the theoretical analysis and real-world applications of single-phase asynchronous motor pump systems combined with PV sources. This approach, which validates the results using RTLAB, provides a validation method to evaluate the performance and guide design choices for effective and environmentally friendly pumping solutions. The primary objective in this case study is introduction of a testing methodology framework for assessing the effectiveness of different drinks and flavors through neuromarketing. The framework involves use of focus groups for evaluation of the neurophysiological reactions of participants to various stimuli and drawing statistically significant conclusions based on the results. In the last past decade, there has been an increase in the availability of affordable and easy-to-use biosensors that provides the possibility for affordable and easy to use real-time measurements of bio-signals, such as electroencephalography (EEG), galvanic skin response (GSR), and pulse. Also, with the recent ongoing increase of the computational capabilities the signal processing and analysis of the recorded biometric data can also be processed in real-time with relatively affordable and mobile hardware. By analyzing these signals and identifying an informative features that are derived statistically from group averaging and independent of individual user’s deviations, it is possible to classify and then apply the measured brainwaves and other biometrics data in various applications. In this paper, the authors apply data from voltage potential electrodes EEG brainwaves, along with GSR and pulse in order to recognize the variation response levels among a sample focus group and the results for determination of their aggregated preferences on tested sample drinks.

A Nonlinear Model Predictive control (NMPC) strategy aimed at controlling a small-scale car model for autonomous racing competitions is presented in this paper. The proposed control strategy is concerned with minimizing the lap time while keeping the vehicle within track boundaries. The optimization problem considers both the vehicle's actuation limits and the lateral and longitudinal forces acting on the car modeled through the Pacejka's magic formula and a simple drivetrain model. Furthermore, the approach allows to safely race on a track populated by static obstacles generating collision-free trajectories and tracking them while enhancing the lap timing performance. Gazebo simulations using the F1/10 simulator showcase the feasibility and validity of the proposed control strategy. The code is released as open-source making it possible to replicate the obtained results. © 2022 IEEE.

Recommendation systems are widely used in web services, such as social networks and e-commerce platforms, to serve personalized content to the users and, thus, enhance their experience. While personalization assists users in navigating through the available options, there have been growing concerns regarding its repercussions on the users and their opinions. Examples of negative impacts include the emergence of filter bubbles and the amplification of users’ confirmation bias, which can cause opinion polarization and radicalization. In this paper, we study the impact of recommendation systems on users, both from a microscopic (i.e., at the level of individual users) and a macroscopic (i.e., at the level of a homogenous population) perspective. Specifically, we build on recent work on the interactions between opinion dynamics and recommendation systems to propose a model for this closed loop, which we then study both analytically and numerically. Among others, our analysis reveals that shifts in the opinions of individual users do not always align with shifts in the opinion distribution of the population. In particular, even in settings where the opinion distribution appears unaltered (e.g., measured via surveys across the population), the opinion of individual users might be significantly distorted by the recommendation system. © 2023, CC BY.

In this paper, using tools from graph theory we provide verifiable necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique hydraulic equilibrium in district heating systems of meshed topology and containing multiple heat sources. Even though numerous publications have addressed the design of efficient algorithms for numerically finding hydraulic equilibria in the general context of water distribution networks, this is not the case for the analysis of existence and uniqueness. Moreover, most of the existing work dealing with these aspects exploit the equivalence between the nonlinear algebraic equations describing the hydraulic equilibria and the KKT conditions of a suitably defined nonlinear convex optimization problem. Differently, this paper proposes necessary and sufficient graph-theoretic conditions on the actuator placement for the existence and uniqueness of a hydraulic equilibrium, independent of the actuators' control objective. An example based on a representative district heating network is considered to illustrate the key aspects of our contribution, and an explicit formulation of the steady state solution is given for the case in which pressure drops through pipes are linear with respect to the flow rate.

The paper deals with a new algorithm for controlling a multi-phase buck DC-DC converter. The principle of its control is explained in detail using a flowchart. It is based on the continuous change of the converter topology using the number of its currently controlled phases depending on the size of the input power. In connection with this, its microprocessor control is also mentioned. The whole issue is explained on the design, simulation and measurement of a laboratory sample of a four-phase buck converter.

In this paper, a new 3D dynamical system with four quadratic nonlinear terms is presented. It is shown that the proposed chaotic system has two saddle-foci, unstable, equilibrium points. Thus, the proposed chaotic system exhibits self-excited chaotic attractors. Dynamical analysis methods such as Lyapunov exponents spectrum, bifurcation diagrams, and phase portraits are used to explore the complex dynamical behaviors of the proposed chaotic system and analyze its basic qualitative properties. It is shown that the maximal Lyapunov exponent (MLE) of the new chaotic system is 7.196, which is a high value. The proposed highly chaotic system exhibits high complexity and it will be very useful for applications in cryptography, encryption and secure communications. The physical feasibility of the proposed system is verified by implementing its electronic circuit schematic using Multisim software. Additionally, a PRNG has been developed using the derived state variables and analyze with NIST-800–22 test. Lastly, we developed a PRNG-based image encryption and employ it for an encryption. The experimental outcomes obtained prove that the 3D chaotic system-based encryption application presented in this section has a very good performance. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

wireless power transmission has been known for over a hundred years and is a method of transmitting electricity over long distances without the use of a conductive medium. Due to the lack of a conductive element, the main disadvantage of this system is its low efficiency. This paper presents an analysis of this system for an electric vehicle. A simulation model created in COMSOL Multiphysics is presented. The two coils are placed in close proximity and the theoretical efficiency of energy transfer between the coils is analyzed. A laboratory model of such a system is developed for a radio controlled (RC) car model. The experimental measurements are compared with the results of the simulation and summarize the necessary steps to be taken in designing such a system. © 2021 IEEE.
