Medical procedures, in particular those invasive, generate significant ethical, legal, and social concerns, including the issues of humanity and person-hood, stigma, autonomy, privacy and security, research ethics, safety, moral and legal responsibility, fair access, and justice. It was pointed out that future research should focus on developing practical solutions to the ethical challenges of medical experimental procedures with human participants, facilitated by the collection of empirical data on the perspectives shared by the general public, researchers and of course study participants.

The management of wastewater is a significant global concern that calls for innovative solutions to lessen its negative effects on the environment. Conventional techniques of treating wastewater need improvement in order to deal with newly discovered contaminants, which highlights the importance of providing precise estimates of process performance and resource requirements. The worsening water shortage situation requires a paradigm shift in which wastewater is viewed as a useful resource. It is possible to create an economy that is both sustainable and circular by treating and recycling wastewater, putting less pressure on freshwater supplies, and leaving as little of an environmental footprint as possible. This study investigates the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) as software estimators in the treatment of wastewater, with a particular emphasis on predicting ammonium concentrations in effluent. In order to deal with imbalanced time-series data, the research introduces innovative data pretreatment strategies. These techniques include a Sliding Window protocol, Data Normalization, and a K-Fold training scheme. This illustrates the potential of ANNs to revolutionize wastewater treatment procedures and drive developments in this field. The suggested method demonstrates higher performance when estimating pollutant concentrations, showing the ability of ANNs to do so.

The increasing application of voltage source converter (VSC) based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) technology in power grids has raised the importance of incorporating DC grids and converters into the existing transmission network. This poses significant challenges in dealing with the resulting optimal power flow (OPF) problem. In this paper, a recently proposed nonconvex distributed optimization algorithm—Augmented Lagrangian based Alternating Direction Inexact Newton method (ALADIN), is tailored to solve the nonconvex AC/DC OPF problem for emerging voltage source converter (VSC) based multiterminal high voltage direct current (VSC-MTDC) meshed AC/DC hybrid systems. The proposed scheme decomposes this AC/DC hybrid OPF problem and handles it in a fully distributed way. Compared to the existing state-of-art Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), which is in general, not applicable for nonconvex problems, ALADIN has a theoretical convergence guarantee. Applying these two approaches to VSC-MTDC coupled with an IEEE benchmark AC power system illustrates that the tailored ALADIN outperforms ADMM in convergence speed and numerical robustness. This work proposes a method to compute the maximum value obtained by a state function along trajectories of a Delay Differential Equation (DDE). An example of this task is finding the maximum number of infected people in an epidemic model with a nonzero incubation period. The variables of this peak estimation problem include the stopping time and the original history (restricted to a class of admissible histories). The original nonconvex DDE peak estimation problem is approximated by an infinite-dimensional Linear Program (LP) in occupation measures, inspired by existing measure-based methods in peak estimation and optimal control. This LP is approximated from above by a sequence of Semidefinite Programs (SDPs) through the moment-Sum of Squares (SOS) hierarchy. Effectiveness of this scheme in providing peak estimates for DDEs is demonstrated with provided examples.

The Technical Committees for control Education of IFAC and IEEE have started a collaborative initiative to collect, curate, and disseminate high quality freely available resources that support instruction of the first control course for undergraduate students in engineering and applied sciences programs. An initial survey with limited distribution provided 64 resources that cover all topics in a typical introductory control curriculum. This paper gives an initial glimpse of the resources collected thus far. It also suggests possible ways for categorization and dissemination.

Smart spaces are a rapidly emerging concept in technology. They result from the convergence of various novel technologies, such as the Internet of Things, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, which allow for greater levels of automation and control within physical environments. The devices which are connected to the IoT network are equipped with sensors to acquire and exchange data. As a result, the IoT has transformed how we live, work, and play. However, the deployment in smart spaces is not always the best due to the issues arising from network node positioning. Therefore, we are investigating solutions to this problem with a novel approach which utilises Voronoi diagrams in conjunction with the algorithmic genetic technique. First, the initial positions of the IoT nodes will be determined by simulating a homogeneous Poisson point process in the smart space environment. Then, after dividing the area into the Voronoi cells, the genetic algorithm will optimise the position towards achieving full network coverage within the smart space. Experimental results prove the 100% network coverage within the specified area.

Model predictive control (MPC) has been used widely in power electronics due to its simple concept, fast dynamic response, and good reference tracking. However, it suffers from parametric uncertainties, since it directly relies on the mathematical model of the system to predict the optimal switching states to be used at the next sampling time. As a result, uncertain parameters lead to an ill-designed MPC. Thus, this paper offers a model-free control strategy on the basis of artificial neural networks (ANNs), for mitigating the effects of parameter mismatching while having a little negative impact on the inverter’s performance. This method includes two related stages. First, MPC is used as an expert to control the studied converter in order to provide a dataset, while, in the second stage, the obtained dataset is utilized to train the proposed ANN. The case study herein is based on a four-level three-cell flying capacitor inverter. In this study, MATLAB/Simulink is used to simulate the performance of the proposed method, taking into account various operating conditions. Afterward, the simulation results are reported in comparison with the conventional MPC scheme, demonstrating the superior performance of the proposed control strategy in terms of robustness against parameters mismatch and low total harmonic distortion (THD), especially when changes occur in the system parameters, compared to the conventional MPC. Furthermore, the experimental validation of the proposed method is provided based on the Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation using the C2000TM-microcontrollerLaunchPadXL TMS320F28379D kit, demonstrating the applicability of the ANN-based control strategy to be implemented on a DSP controller. © 2021, CC BY.

In this paper various variables describing brain signals such as near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and electroencephalography (EEG) on the Naive Bayesian Classifier were presented. Analysis of biomedical signals is a very challenging task – therefore the authors of this work decided to analyse two types of brain signals – EEG and NIRS, which have different features, character, nature and are differently prone to various artifacts occurrence. The applied classifiers can be applied for various features extraction and pattern comparisons, which is useful in diagnostic processes.

Occupancy grid mapping is an important component in a road scene understanding for autonomous driving. It can encapsulate data from heterogeneous sensor sources like radars, LiDARs, cameras and ultrasonics. At the core of occupancy grid (OG) generation, there is usually an inverse sensor model (ISM), which infers the occupancy representation from the sensor readings. Traditional ISMs are characterized by a very rigid structure, suited only for one sensor type, and specific occupancy grid representation. This paper proposes a novel ISM framework, which offers a separation between free and occupied space, supporting both Bayesian and Dempster-Shafer OG representations. The framework is especially useful when dealing with multiple different sensors where custom or preselected probability distribution can be applied. The presented ISM architecture is modular and flexible, which is described in an illustrative example of application customized for different detection sources. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In industrial settings, querying data streams from Internet of Things (IoT) devices benefits from utilizing elastic criteria to enhance the interpretability of the current state of the monitored environment. Fuzzy sets provide this elasticity, enabling the aggregation and representation of similar values in a human-comprehensible manner. However, many sensor signals exhibit temporal oscillations, leading to varying interpretations of the signal based on its current trend (rising or falling). This hysteresis in signal (and subsequently of the production device) interpretation inspired us to introduce this phenomenon into data stream processing, resulting in the novel concept of hysteretic fuzzy sets. This article demonstrates how fuzzy searching and grouping can be applied to IoT sensor signals in flexible Big Data stream processing on Apache Kafka. We illustrate the impact of data stream querying with KSQL queries involving fuzzy sets (encompassing fuzzy filtering of data stream events, fuzzy transformation of data stream attributes, fuzzy grouping, and joining) on the flexibility of executed operations and computational resources utilized by the Kafka processing engine. Finally, our experiments with hysteretic fuzzy sets while analyzing sensor signals in power plants demonstrate that this novel approach effectively reduces the number of alarms while monitoring the state of the production machine.
