Last five decades witnessed remarkable developments in linear control systems and thus problems in this subject has been largely resolved. The scope of the present paper is beyond linear solutions. Modern technology demands sophisticated control laws to meet stringent design specifications thus highlighting the increasingly conspicuous position of nonlinear control systems, which is the topic of this paper. Historical role of analytical concepts in analysis and design of nonlinear control systems is briefly outlined. Recent advancements in these systems from applications perspective are examined with critical comments on associated challenges. It is anticipated that wider dissemination of this comprehensive review will stimulate more collaborations among the research community and contribute to further developments.

The timber's drying process is a mandatory operation before any action of the wood processing. In the recent years, the fundamental research in the field of timber's drying has made progress, the physical laws regarding the removal of the water from the wood through different procedures (convection, vacuum, microwave etc.) being elucidated. The using of the calculus techniques allows the accurate simulation of heat and mass transfer phenomena, as well as of the mechanical aspects (internal stresses, deformations), which accompany the wood's drying process. The paper presents the implementation of the monitoring and the control system of the timber's conventional drying, using programmable controllers (Siemens), dedicated devices and dedicated software (Step 7).

There is need to replace the traditional materials used in mechanical constructions with cheaper materials characterized by high durability and simplicity of manufacturing. An alternative technology is 3D printing technology that uses ABS material (poly (acrylonitrile-co-butadiene-co-styrene)). 3D printing technology ensures the rapid change of model dimensions and shapes at the prototyping stage and a relatively cheap cost of new elements. This paper deals with the visualization of chaotic attractors and boundary surfaces generated for different parameters in Chua's circuit. These objects were visualized by ParaView open-source tool. Boundary surfaces were reconstructed from the point cloud by filters which ParaView offers. The point cloud was filtered from the dozens of calculated partial 2D cross-sections of state space. The article illustrates the possibilities to use the free software with high-quality graphics output when analyzing both autonomous and non-autonomous circuits. This can help to accurately illustrate the reason for failing circuits or to clarify the principle of their operation. This software can be also used in other areas including electricalengineering and electro-mechanics.

The paper presents a novel method of fault location and the calculation of transverse impedance of a fault in a damaged medium voltage cable. The method is based on the measurement of input impedance at one end of the cable with an open and short circuit state at its other end with appropriately selected frequency. The obtained results were compared with those obtained by means of the reflectometer. The effectiveness of the method was verified numerically and experimentally.

Nowadays, majority of systems that involve some kind of decision-making process use policy-based computing where decisions are being made as a result of a policy evaluation. Policies are usually formed by system experts who describe in a specified Policy Definition Language how the system should respond to a change of its context information. However, depending on the policy complexity needed to make a decision may become an issue, especially when embedded or real-time control systems are concerned. In such systems certain level of policy complexity may result in ability of the control system to return a valid decision before a deadline. Hence any architectural solution that would resolve or at least minimise the issue would be more than welcome. In this paper we propose an architecture for a policy-based decision making system in application to an embedded control systems. In our solution add to a typical policy-based system an intermediate component - a cache memory which ultimately leads to increasing of the whole system performance. A number of scenario-based performance tests show potential performance gains.

The paper discusses the application of System on Chip devices for processing Megapixel video streams. The domain of image processing using high resolution images is very demanding in the scope of calculating power and frequently exploits special processing hardware. The progress of integration technology brings about SoC which are capable of meeting such processing demands. Characteristics of FPGA and DSP based systems are assessed. A concise survey of chip solutions is presented and a pair of representative systems is chosen for comparison of their properties. The design of a smoke detection system is used for evaluating the advantages and drawbacks of using such SoC solutions. Almost identical image processing algorithms are implemented in the case of FPGA and DSP. Both solutions meet the image processing requirements and are suitable for real time processing. FPGA based solution is much faster as it uses pipelining for improving the utilisation of scarce memory resources.

This article introduces the possibilities of the simulation and visualisation of the "Twin-Rotor MIMO System" laboratory model outputs by means of various support software tools. The 3D model of the system, (used for simulation and visualisation), is designed in SolidWorks 3D CAD software. Matlab/Simulink with extension libraries like Simscape and 3D Animation - (formerly Virtual Reality Toolbox), is used for 3D visualisation and simulation. The 3D Animation toolbox is only used for the visualisation of the mathematical and real models. The Simscape library - on the other hand, is used for the validation of the reverse control of the derived mathematical models correctness and for simulation and analysis purposes as a suitable substitution for real models. As a result of this, these supporting software tools streamline the overall suggested controls - from analysis to presentation of the results.
