This paper presents the hybrid approach for visualization of documents sets by the combination of hierarchical clustering method, based on the Growing Hierarchical Self-Organizing Maps algorithm, and Sammon projection. Algorithms based on the self-organizing maps provide robust clustering method suitable for visualization of larger number of documents into the grid-based 2D maps. Sammon projection is nonlinear projection method suitable mostly to visualization of smaller sets of object on (usually 2D) maps based on the projections. Here we have implemented and tested combination of these approaches, where starting set of documents is organized using GHSOM to subsets of similar documents, then for clusters at the end of clustering phase, with smaller number of inputs, Sammon maps are created in order to provide distinction also for documents in these clusters. The method for extraction of characteristic terms based on the information gain analysis was used for description of clusters. Existing library JBOWL was used for implementation of the hybrid algorithm. For testing purposes, the documents in English language were used.

An important prerequisite for intelligent robots to effectively perform daily tasks in indoor environments is an advanced environment model. Not only should this model contain metric level information about the geometry of the perceived environment, it should also provide abstract level information, such as topology and objects, so as to benefit high level robotic applications. In this paper, we propose a mapping system which generates a coherent semantic map for indoor environments while taking laser range data and RGB-D images as sensor input. We propose to realize this system by combining parametric environment abstraction, i.e. using a parametric model to approximate the geometry of the perceived environment, with 3D object localization. Experiments using real world data show promising results and thus confirm the usefulness of our system.

A GM-PHD filter is used for pedestrian tracking in a crowd surveillance application. The purpose is to keep track of the different groups over time as well as to represent the shape of the groups and the number of people within the groups. Input data to the GM-PHD filter are detections using a state of the art algorithm applied to video frames from the PETS 2012 benchmark data. In a first step, the detections in the frames are converted from image coordinates to world coordinates. This implies that groups can be defined in physical units in terms of distance in meters and speed differences in meters per second. The GM-PHD filter is a Bayesian framework that does not form tracks of individuals. Its output is well suited for clustering of individuals into groups. The results demonstrate that the GM-PHD filter has the capability of estimating the correct number of groups with an accurate representation of their sizes and shapes.

Power generation control in variable-speed variable-pitch horizontal-axis wind turbines operating at high wind speeds is considered in this work. A torque and pitch control strategies are proposed, implemented and validated using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory wind turbine simulator FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) code. Numerical results show that the proposed controllers are effective for power regulation. The performance of the contributed controllers is compared to some state-of-the-art methodologies showing its improvements.
