The refrigeration component of electricity consumption will continue to rise due to global warming and the increasing need for refrigeration in various sectors. Refrigeration is vital to address food storage and shortage as well as food security issues. Demand side management (DSM) is often effected through energy conservation and efficiency as well as peak clipping and load shifting measures. This paper looks into demand side management potential of refrigeration appliances considering temperature, load profile and appliance characteristics. Model-based simulation of temperature evolution is compared with measurement values. Results show a potential 17% reduction in annual energy requirements and costs from applying the proposed switching control on fridges and freezers with consideration of required temperature thresholds, and point towards the potential of using this approach for demand side management. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we introduce EMD-Based Hyperbolic Diffusion Distance (EMD-HDD), a new method for constructing a meaningful distance metric for hierarchical data with latent hierarchical structure. Our method relies on hyperbolic geometry, diffusion geometry, and the Earth Mover's Distance (EMD). Specifically, our method embeds data points into a product manifold of hyperbolic spaces, allowing us to recover the hidden hierarchical structure encoded by the mutual relationships between features. We demonstrate the effectiveness of EMD-HDD through experiments on five hyperspectral imaging datasets, showcasing its capability to capture and reveal the intrinsic hierarchical structures inherent in such data. © 2025 IEEE.

Now Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) severs and Device-to-Device (D2D) communications provide offload computing services for User Devices (UDs). However, the UAV has relatively high transmission latency. And D2D lacks the necessary flexibility. In this paper, we introduce a novel MEC system that utilizes the collaborative advantages of flexible movement of UAV and the low latency transmission of D2D communication to process tasks from UDs. We formulate an optimization problem focused on minimizing the tasks transmission and execution delay of UDs. The problem involves joint optimization of user scheduling, UAV trajectory, and resource allocation of Virtual Machines (VMs) on the MEC server. To tackle this non-convex problem, we propose a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm with Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG). Through simulation results, we demonstrate that DDPG reduces the latency by 41% compared to Deep Q-Network (DQN) and Actor-Critic (AC) algorithm. Our collaborative UAV-D2D model has 16% and 32% lower latency than when only the UAV or D2D works alone. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) system uses alternating magnetic field to transmit power from the transmitter to the receiver. To confine the magnetic field, WPT coils are realized with high permeability substrate material that ensures shielding. Aside from shielding, high permeability substrate also increases the coil inductance. When transmitter and receiver coils are placed in close proximity, high permeability substrate of transmitter coil increases the inductance of the receiver coil, and vice versa. This additional inductance increase is a function of the substrate material type and the distance between the coils. To achieve high efficiency and low losses of the WPT system, a capacitor network is added to both transmitter and receiver coil. In a common serial-serial (S-S) WPT system topology, the capacitor networks are asymmetric, i.e. the capacitor network of the transmitter and the receiver are not identical. The efficiency of asymmetric S-S topology is significantly impaired due to variable coil inductance. To attain high efficiency in such operating conditions, this paper proposes symmetric S-S WPT topology with emphasis on transmission distance optimization. © 2024 IEEE.

Traditional volume surface integral equation for analysis of metal-dielectric composites requires the target mesh to be conformal, which leads to over-meshing of the multi-scale model and reduces the solution efficiency. In order to deal with this problem, a non-conformal volume surface integral equation (VSIE) method based on the discontinuous Galerkin volume integral equation (DGVIE) and the grid-robust higher order vector basis (GRHOVB) surface integral equation is proposed in this paper to enhance the computing efficiency. In this method, the DGVIE is used to deal with dielectric target, which avoids the computation of higher-order singular integrals and facilitates the use of volume non-conformal meshing and mixed basis function discretization. The GRHOVB function is used to deal with PEC target, so that the surface mesh also does not need to be conformal. Numerical results verify the good performance of this non-conformal method. © 2024 IEEE.

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has become an indispensable way to reduce the execution delay of devices. However, for some devices located far away from the MEC server, the transmission delay of communication with MEC is still large. In this case, we consider using multiple relay devices to assist Internet of Things (IoT) devices to communicate with MEC servers. To enhance the energy efficiency of the system, we introduce Energy Harvesting (EH) devices to provide energy for the IoT devices. Our objective is to maximize the utilization of EH devices while minimizing the overall delay in task offloading for the IoT devices. We tackle the problem by formulating it as a Markov Decision Problem (MDP). However, due to the significant expansion of the state space, traditional methods such as relative value iteration and linear iterative reconstruction are ineffective in solving this problem. Hence, we propose an approach called Multi-Relay Assisted Dynamic Computation Offloading (MRADCO) algorithm, which leverages the Lyapunov optimization technique. It is important to note that our proposed algorithm makes decisions solely based on the current state, without requiring the distribution information of the wireless channel and EH process. This characteristic enhances the algorithm’s practicality and reduces complexity in real-world implementations. Through rigorous theoretical derivation and comprehensive simulation experiments, we demonstrate that our algorithm is asymptotically optimal. And compared with the benchmark algorithm LODCO, our algorithm reduces the time by 50%. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

This study reports a fixed-time tracking control problem for strict-feedback nonlinear systems with quantized inputs and actuator faults where the total number of faults is allowed to be infinite. By taking advantage of radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs), unknown nonlinear function terms in the system dynamic model can be effectively approached. In addition, based on the sector property of quantization nonlinearities and the structure of the actuator fault model, novel adaptive estimations and innovative auxiliary design signals are constructed to compensate for the influence caused by actuator faults and quantized inputs properly in the fixed-time convergence settings. Then, rigorous theoretical analysis manifests that the proposed control scheme can make the output tracking error converge to a small neighborhood of the origin within a fixed time, and the upper bound of the setting time not only does not depend on initial states of the system but also can be preassigned by selecting parameters appropriately. Meanwhile, all the signals in the closed-loop system remain bounded. Finally, a numerical example and a practical example of a single-link manipulator are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm. © 2012 IEEE.

In this work we consider a scheme for unsourced random access (uRA) in cell free (CF) wireless networks, which is conceptually reminiscent of the 2-step RACH scheme defined in 3GPP for cellular networks. During the designated random access channel (RACH) slots, users engaged in random access transmit codewords drawn from a shared codebook. The distributed and CF nature of the network is adressed by partitioning the network coverage area into zones, referred to as 'locations,' and assigning a location-specific access codebook to each location. We use the recently proposed multisource Approximated Message Passing (AMP) algorithm for joint detection of the access codewords and channel estimation. In particular, AMP generates two outputs:a list of active codewords and an estimate of the corresponding channel vectors. The aforementioned outputs facilitate the formation of a user-centric cluster. The impact of random access users and the overall system performance are assessed based on the sum spectral efficiency for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) of the data transmission slots, under limited random activity of the users. © 2024 IEEE.

Emerging non-volatile memory technologies provides a solution to break through the limitations of the vonNeumann architecture and using these technologies to develop logic-in-memory circuits. In this paper, we propose a novel circuit design style based on hafnium oxide ferroelectric memory technology, using a accumulator as an example. This design method offers a new direction for the development of logic-in-memory circuits. Additionally, the method significantly increases data processing capability and provides greater flexibility for circuit design. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper deals with the simulation calculation of transmission (S21) and reflection (S22) parameters in a material parametrically based on clay (brick). The electromagnetic parameters of the clay that are the subject of the study are: relative permittivity Εr, loss tangent tan δ and electrical conductivity σ, while the only structural parameter is the thickness d of the sample. The values of all considered parameters are within the range of data from available literature and values that could occur due to external causes (e. g. an increase in clay moisture leads to an increase in electrical conductivity). The simulation model was carried out with the software tool ANSYS HFSS and validated with a laboratory measurement model. The laboratory model consists of a circular waveguide with an inner diameter of 150 mm and a total length of 700 mm, which is excited by 52 mm long probes placed 50 mm from the last wall of the waveguide. The lower cut-off frequency of this measurement system is 1.173 GHz, so all results (simulation and measurement) are limited by this lower cut-off frequency of the waveguide. All simulation calculations were performed for three clay sample thicknesses: 18 mm, 36 mm and 54 mm. These calculations were made with the aim of determining brick composites that have high attenuation of electromagnetic EM waves (low transmission parameter and high reflection parameter) in order to reduce the strength of EM fields inside the object made of such bricks.
