It is well known that speech production and perception process is inherently bimodal consisting of audio and visual components. Recently there has been increased interest in using the visual modality in combination with the acoustic modality for improved speech processing. This field of study has gained the title of audio-visual speech processing. Lip movement recognition, also known as lip reading, is a communication skill which involves the interpretation of lip movements in order to estimate some important parameters of the lips that include, but not limited to, size, shape and orientation. In this paper, we represent a hybrid framework for lip reading which is based on both audio and visual speech parameters extracted from a video stream of isolated spoken words. The proposed algorithm is self-tuned in the sense that it starts with an estimations of speech parameters based on visual lip features and then the coefficients of the algorithm are fine-tuned based on the extracted audio parameters. In the audio speech processing part, extracted audio features are used to generate a vector containing information of the speech phonemes. These information are used later to enhance the recognition and matching process. For lip feature extraction, we use a modified version of the method used by F. Huang and T. Chen for tracking of multiple faces. This method is based on statistical color modeling and the deformable template. The experiments based on the proposed framework showed interesting results in recognition of isolated words.

We developed a new ankle foot orthosis (AFO) using artificial muscle. In AFO two pressure sensors are arranged in the bottom of the foot. One is located on the toe and other is located on the heel. The control consists of four control sequences such that (1) when the heel touches down on the floor, the pressure of artificial muscle goes to zero gradually, (2) when the toe touches down on the floor after the touch down of the heel, the pressure of artificial muscle is still off, (3) when the heel leaves from the floor, the pressure of artificial muscle is zero, (4) when the toe leaves from the floor, the pressure of artificial muscle becomes a certain value, hence, the artificial muscle is shortened. From the experimental data of a disabled patient it is revealed that this control law yields the faster walking and the shorter swing length. Also, especially, it is clarified that in the action shown by (2) above the plantar flexion control is very important for early recovery of walking ability. In this paper we focus our attention to the development of a new control law to improve the rehabilitation performance based on the plantar flexion control.

Independent design of decentralized controllers in the frequency domain

The paper presents an original frequency domain decentralized controller design technique for guaranteed performance. The novelty consists in that the designed decentralized controller guarantees the required performance for the full system. Interactions are considered in local designs by means of a chosen characteristic locus of the interaction matrix used to modify mathematical models of isolated subsystems thus defining the equivalent subsystems [7]. The developed graphical design method is insightful and promising from the viewpoint of further application in the robust control design [8]. Theoretical conclusions are supported with results obtained from the solution of several examples. © Periodica Polytechnica 2007.

The paper describes a software package based on Maple computer algebra system that implements so-called generalized transfer functions. These have been re-discovered recently as a new way of representing nonlinear control systems, in many aspects similar to the well-known traditional linear transfer functions. The aim of the paper is to focus on problems and algorithms connected with the computer implementation of the generalized transfer functions rather than on theoretical issues of the approach, which are being addressed in detail in several other papers. ©2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a new construction method of a new set of polynomial equations leading to the optimal solution of switching angles which minimize the total harmonic distortion (THD) of a three-phase multilevel converter. The number of equations obtained by this method is lower compared to previous methods. It is possible to solve the problem more simply. This method is based on analytical solution of the PWM problem in single-phase connection which is very fast and efficient and gives the conjunction between both problems. © 2007 EUCA.

This paper introduces the improvement of slip energy recovery drives with voltage source inverter for a speed control of wound rotor induction motors in order to reduce harmonics of input line current waveforms and improve its power factor. A boost chopper is used to connect the diode rectifier to DC link voltage, which is composed of a capacitor and voltage source inverter type space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). This scheme leads to be able to adjust the speed of the motor by the duty cycle of the chopper. The PI cascade controller is also introduced to control a speed to be constant when the load varies. An overview of the experimental test bench that the results are presented is three-fold. The first is the harmonics of input line current waveforms are reduced, the second power factor of the drive with VSI are improved and the third presented for a design PI controller for control a speed, where step change loading and unloading transients.

This paper presents the design and the experimental validation of model predictive control (MPC) of a hybrid dynamical process based on measurements collected by a wireless sensor network. The proposed setup is the prototype of an industrial application in which a remote station controls the process via wireless network links. The experimental platform is a laboratory process consisting of four infrared lamps, controlled in pairs by two on/off switches, and of a transport belt, where moving parts equipped with wireless sensors are heated by the lamps. By approximating the stationary heat spatial distribution as a piecewise affine function of the position along the belt, the resulting plant model is a hybrid dynamical system. The control architecture is based on the reference governor approach: the process is actuated by a local controller, while a hybrid MPC algorithm running on a remote base station sends optimal belt velocity set-points and lamp on/off commands over a network link exploiting the information received through the wireless network. A discrete-time hybrid model of the process is used for the hybrid MPC algorithm and for the state estimator.

The unique characteristic of a repetitive process is a series of sweeps or passes through a set of dynamics defined over a finite duration known as the pass length. At the end of each pass, the process is reset and the next time through the output, or pass profile, produced on the previous pass acts as a forcing function on, an hence contributes to, the dynamics of the new pass profile. They are hence a class of systems with information propagation in two independent directions where here the dynamics over the finite pass length are described by a matrix linear differential equation and that from pass to pass has a discrete updating structure. This means that filtering/estimation theory/algorithms for, in particular, 2D discrete linear systems is not applicable. In this paper we solve a general filtering problem with a view toward use in the many applications where such action will be required. © 2007 EURASIP.

Repetitive processes are a distinct class of two-dimensional systems (i.e. information propagation in two independent directions) of both systems theoretic and applications interest. They cannot be controlled by direct extension of existing techniques from either standard (termed 1D here) or two-dimensional (2D) systems theory. Here we give significant new results on the design of mixed state feedback/output (or pass profile) control schemes incorporating a state observer. These results are for the sub-class of so-called differential linear repetitive processes which arise in applications areas such as iterative learning control. © 2007 EUCA.
