This paper presents a study of the energy consumption of a full electric bus charged at a fast-charging station with pantographs in the city of Maribor. The results of simulated and real tests on the PT line 6 are compared and analysed. The partly electrified PT line 6 provides insights on comparison between simulated energy consumption and re-al-life energy consumption, charging time and reliability of charging. The results reveal that the simulation considered several important factors like real life turnaround time, driving cycle, regenerative braking, charging time, peak hour charging time, heating/cooling systems, full passenger load as important and critical to identify the appropriate concept for charging. Technical and operational errors were identified in real world, due to connectivity failures or driver errors in positioning the vehicle, which were not considered in the simulation. The real-world data and procedure for selection of the most appropriate charging technology represent a good basis for full electrified Public Transport in Maribor. © 2023 The Author(s). The research has been motivated by the desire for a straightforward implementation of an application described as a dataflow graph on a multicore architecture. The design has been based on an already existing language that inherently has a notion of structure: the functional programming language Haskell. Haskell has been used both for embedding the grammar for proposed language as well as to describe streaming applications with the proposed language.

The herein presented research is motivated by the need for reconfigurable, flexible computing arrays targeted at streaming applications that contain a large degree of instruction-level parallelism. Such arrays are usually referred to as coarse-grained reconfigurable arrays (CGRAs). CGRAs are composed of small, reconfigurable cores that are interconnected to form a computing grid. Here, we present a complete CGRA, consisting of an architecture and a programming language. Both the architecture and the programming language are inspired by the principles found in dataflow.

Anomaly localization plays a critical role if a disaster occurs in a high-density crowd to efficiently rescue the crowd from the right location. This paper enriches anomaly localization by introducing new localization features, in addition to the ‘only’ localization feature of source/start point detection existing literature offers. New features introduced include crowd density estimation in localized regions and direction/angle of a localized region. A motion shape image (MSI) based approach is introduced for localization and features detection and experimentation is performed on benchmark and our proposed high-density crowd datasets. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

At high-density crowd gatherings, people naturally escape from the region where any unexpected event happens. Escape in high-density crowds appears as a divergence pattern in the scene and timely detecting divergence patterns can save many human lives. In this paper, we propose to physically capture crowd normal and divergence motion patterns (or motion shapes) in form of images and train a shallow convolution neural network (CNN) on motion shape images for divergence behavior detection. Crowd motion pattern shape is obtained by extracting ridges of Lagrangian Coherent Structure (LCS) from the Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponent (FTLE) field and convert ridges into the grey-scale image. We also propose a divergence localization algorithm to pinpoint anomaly location(s). Experimentation is carried out on synthetic crowd datasets simulating normal and divergence behaviors at the high-density crowd. Comparison with state-of-the-art methods shows our method can obtain better accuracy for both divergence behavior detection and localization problems. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Application code and processor parallelization, together with instruction set customization, are the most common and effective ways to enhance the performance and efficiency of application-specific processors (ASIPs). Both the effective code parallelization and data/task parallelism exploitation, as well as effective instruction set customization, enable an ASIP to achieve a significant performance improvement using limited extra hardware resources. However, a naive parallelization or instruction set customization may not result in the required performance improvement, leading to a waste of computing and energy resources. Therefore, when performing parallelization or custom instruction selection, complex tradeoffs between processing speed, circuit area and power consumption must be closely observed. In this paper, we propose and discuss an efficient ASIP-based Multi-Processor System-on-a-Chip (MPSoC) design for ray-tracing, exploiting application parallelism and hardware replication-aware instruction set customization. Without hardware sharing among the custom instructions units, the proposed parallel ray-tracer MPSoC design with custom instructions achieves 77% speed up in comparison to a single microprocessor design with the default instruction set. However, with the replication-aware instruction set customization, the speed up increases to 81%. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

A novel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation algorithm for digital communication systems is presented. Lack of knowledge of both the current channel's transfer function and the current noise power is a typical property of systems, which transmit over multipath time varying channels. In order to overcome this impediment we designed a SNR estimation method that only makes use of the phases of the received signal and the ones of the transmitted signal or an estimate of them without regarding the channel's transfer function. It is shown that the SNR calculation formula provides an excellent estimate for SNR values higher than 10dB and constellation schemes with constant modulus. Moreover, the method's enhanced performance in comparison to the well-known M{sub}2M{sub}4 moment based estimator when a relatively small number of symbols is used for the SNR estimation is shown through simulation results. It is finally explained how the new phase based estimator can be beneficially used in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems with faulty frame synchronization or/and a frequency offset.

The Ray Tracing rendering algorithm can produce high-fidelity images of 3-D scenes, including shadow effects, as well as reflections and transparencies. This is currently done at a processing speed of at most 30 frames per second. Therefore, actual implementations of the algorithm are not yet suitable for interactive real-time rendering, which is required in games and virtual reality based applications. Fortunately, the algorithm allows for massive parallelization of its computations. In this paper, we present a parallel architecture for ray tracing based on a uniform spatial subdivision of the scene and exploiting an embedded computation of ray-triangle intersections. This approach allows for a significant acceleration of intersection computations, as well as, a reduction of the total number of the required intersections checks. Furthermore, it allows for these checks to be performed in parallel and in advance for each ray. In this paper we discuss and analyze an ASIP-based implementation using FPGAs and a GPGPU-based parallel implementation of the proposed architecture. The special issue of the International Journal of Numerical Modeling: Electronic Networks, Devices And Fields carried a report on the 9th International Symposium on Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF 2013). The 9th edition was organized by the Department of electrical engineering and computer science of the faculty of Applied science of the University of Liège and by the Department of electrical Energy, Systems and Automation of the faculty of engineering and architecture of Ghent University. EMF 2013 was attended by 108 participants from 19 countries and featured four keynote speakers. Twenty-two of the presented papers were selected for publication in this special issue, while the high scientific and technical quality of the symposium was well reflected in the quality of the manuscripts contained in this issue.

Globally, biomass usage as a supply of non-depletable resources materials used in the production of energy at their rawest state is an issue. Pyrolysis is a method of thermally treating biomass that as a consequence in the formation of liquid, products, both solid and gaseous. Elevated heating is required to transform the complicated composition of the biomass's underlying structure matrix into usable products. Heating with a microwave oven has the potential to become a competitive option. to more traditional methods of heating. Owing to its ease of operation and rapid heating rate, it has recently been widely employed in pyrolysis. The goals of this research are to found the principles of MW-assisted pyrolysis action and to examine some critical issues characteristics of operation that have an influence on the yield of a product. This procedure appears to be governed by a number of operational factors for instance, microwave power and temperature degree, the addition of microwave absorbers and their concentration, initial relative humidity, primary sweep gas flow rate/time spent in residence. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
