A novel optimisation method for optimal integration of the hybrid distributed generation with FACTS device: A practical case study

The injected power from the renewable energy sources can bring new challenges and problems to the power grid, which already suffers from power quality (PQ) problems. The impact of the integration of the renewable power plants into the electric network corresponding to the level of harmonics and its propagation, besides the initial harmonics resulting from the nonlinear loads itself, has been presented and compensated in this paper. The paper presents the determination of the size of the distributed generation (DG) based on recent optimisation algorithms and a techno-economic feasibility study of PV and wind power plant was evaluated using the RETScreen program. Moreover, the active power filter (APF) has been designed as D-STATCOM for improving the power quality. A comprehensive comparison of the response of the system considering photovoltaic and wind generation with a nonlinear load in both cases with and without the APF is presented using MATLAB/Simulink. The transient enclosure voltage rise (TEVR) in GIS is caused by very fast overvoltages that occur inside the enclosure during the switching operation, mainly during disconnector operations. TEVR is caused by very high frequency overvoltages (the order of MHz), for which even small inductance of earthing leads can represent significant impedance. The level of TEVR strongly depends on design and length of the earthing leads. Therefore, overvoltage measurements were performed for different earthing leads configurations in 110 kV GIS and results are presented in this paper. The earthing leads configurations were first verified by simulation in the EMTP program. © 2023 IEEE.

The integration of electric vehicles in the transportation sector leads to lessening greenhouse gas emissions. It is mandatory to recharge electric vehicles as it depends on the battery storage system and due to the increase in electric vehicles models and numbers, there is a need for installing electric vehicles charging stations to meet new load needs that are considered as an overload. The unscheduled placement of electric vehicles charging stations harms the power grid and leads to poor power quality. This paper presents a proposed algorithm to optimally allocate electric vehicles charging stations in a distribution system. The allocation is based on minimizing the energy loss and maintaining the system voltage profile within limits. This is accomplished by considering a variable load profile and the charging/discharging profile of electric vehicles charging stations. To support system voltage, Vehicle-to-Grid mode is applied instead of using additional energy source. MATLAB/Simulink® software package and genetic algorithm are used to verify the proposed algorithm on a standard distribution network. The results prove the algorithm reliability as the system load is approximately doubled, and energy loss is barely slightly increased.

Testing and validation of traction inverters are crucial for battery electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. Motor emulators are used to replace the complexity of having moving elements and to provide flexible system to test different inverter ratings and different motor types. The emulator system comprises of an inverter coupled with an inductor. The accurate selection of the inductance and resistance of the coupling inductors as well as the tuning of the PI controllers for the direct and quadrature components of the emulator inverter provides a sinusoidal current with very low ripples that can be very similar to the current provided by the equivalent electrical motor. In this work a particle swarm (PSO) optimization technique is retained to tune the PI parameters for the direct and quadrature currents controllers, as well as optimizing the resistance and inductance of the coupling inductor. The optimization is targeting the measured emulator current to coincide with the current of the simulated machine model. The presented methodology is validated using MATLAB Simulink simulation and the results shows a matching current value at different operating points and proven the fidelity of the proposed approach. © 2022 IEEE.

The world is being converted to using electric vehicles (EVs) to combat climate change and lower pollution levels. As a result of the tremendous development in the battery industry, the electric vehicles industry flourishes, especially the transition from hybrid to electric cars. Sustaining this process calls for more electric vehicle charging stations to be made available to the general population. This extra load has impacts on the distribution network such as exceeding power system limitations and quality violations of the power network. This paper presents an optimal solution for the integration of electric vehicle charging stations in the distribution system without violating the system power quality constraints. To solve this problem, Self-Adaptive Multi-Population Elitist Jaya Algorithm (SAMPE-JAYA) is used to obtain the location of electric vehicle charging stations, Vehicle to Grid sharing (V2G), and distributed generation units (DG). The simulation results are carried out on a balanced IEEE-33 bus radial distribution system. The load curves and electric vehicles charging/discharging profiles are used to help in allocating electric vehicle charging stations. The selected location for inserting charging stations proved its reliability by improving the voltage and decreasing power loss.

This paper proposes a flexible power generation scheme based on model predictive control (MPC). The proposed method combines maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation with constant power generation (CPG), where the maximum power is extracted from the photovoltaic (PV) system. However, if the extracted power exceeds a certain threshold, the power generation will then be limited. A modified version of the perturb and observe (P&O) method is proposed to enhance the efficiency of the PV system. After that, the reference generated will be sent to the MPC loop, which decides the optimal switching state according to the cost function design. Different operating conditions confirm the superiority of the suggested technique, while comparison with the conventional method highlights the main benefits. © 2023 IEEE.

In recent years, we can see an enormous rise of distributed energy resources (DER) of which the biggest interest is in renewable energy sources (RES). To support their smooth integration, battery storage systems (BESS) are very often recommended and used to balance the RESs’ output power fluctuations. Considering the proposed rise of electric mobility, the used batteries of electric vehicles can be applied for second life batteries energy storage systems (SLBESS) to support the operation of the grid with renewables. To do it efficiently, the operation of SLBESS has to be simulated in advance. As a support of these activities, the CIGRE Task Force has developed a few European network benchmarks for real-world simulations. The aim of the paper will be the presentation of the use of a such benchmark network, created in pandapower, for the simulation of SLBESS integration and application. © 2022 Technical University of Košice.

A harmonic filter is used as a part of the skip hoist of the majority of mining enterprises in Russia. The voltage increases as the hoisting machine decelerates and decreases as it accelerates. The harmonic filter cannot compensate for voltage deviations, flicker or upper harmonics deviations. The use of a STATCOM-type dynamic compensation device instead of a harmonic filter enables voltage stabilization at various skip hoist loadings. A STATCOM device allows for a higher (design) speed of the skip. A 15% speed growth of the skip hoist with the STATCOM device connected to it significantly increases or extraction without any constructive changes of the machine if compared to the usual skip speed achieved with an HF operation. This study provided a comparative analysis of technical characteristics of FACTS devices such as capacitor banks, static VAR compensators, synchronous compensators, and STATCOMs. It was proved that STATCOM is the most effective means of voltage level stabilization to be used at a skip hoist. The main conclusions were based on the simulation modelling in the Matlab Simulink environment. The model focused on the influence of different operating modes of the hoisting machine on the level of reactive power consumption, voltage level and harmonic components coefficients in the power distribution network of the mining enterprise. © 2022 IEEE.

The integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into hybrid energy systems (HRES) is crucial for addressing the growing energy and water demands in remote and off-grid communities, particularly in arid regions. This study focuses on optimizing an off-grid HRES to provide reliable electricity and freshwater for a coastal residential community in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. The system combines solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines (WT), diesel generators (DG), battery storage, and a reverse osmosis desalination plant (ROD) to ensure sustainable energy and water supply. Three configurations, PV/DG/Battery/ROD, WT/DG/Battery/ROD, and PV/WT/DG/Battery/ROD, are evaluated by three recent optimization approaches: electric eel foraging optimization (EEFO), educational competition optimizer (ECO), and parrot optimizer (PO). The goal of the optimization problem is minimizing the annual cost while maximizing system reliability, considering performance parameters, such as cost of energy (COE), loss of power supply probability (LPSP), and excess energy. A comparative analysis has been executed over 50 independent trials per algorithm, considering mean, standard deviation, and efficiency. Results reveal that EEFO performs better than ECO and PO, achieving minimum COE, LPSP, and excess energy in the PV-WT-DG-Battery-ROD system. The system achieved maximum performance regarding cost efficiency, dependability, and utilization of power. Besides, EEFO performs better than ECO and PO, achieving faster convergence speed, stability, and accuracy. © 2025 IEEE.

Modified pentagonal fractal antenna for ultra-wideband applications in communication systems

Due to the recent expansion in the generations of the communications systems, it is utmost priority to transmit a large amount of data over a wideband frequency spectrum. For this single ultra-wideband (UWB) antennas are the prime choice as compared to the multiple narrow band antennas. A modified pentagonal fractal patch antenna with a modified ground plane covering ultra-wideband has been proposed. The antenna has a compact size of 25 mm × 25 mm × 1.6 mm with peak gain of 2.2 dB. The UWB coverage of the design is achieved by implementing modified co-planar ground, modified fractal geometry and coplanar feed. The proposed design possesses the significant resonance and radiation performance with very compact size on low-cost substrate while covering the whole UWB. Finally, the simulated resonating and radiation characteristics have been validated with the measured characteristics of the fabricated prototype and the results are quite promising. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
