This study offers experimental testing of commercial and laboratory inverters, utilized in a laboratory prototype of an urban microgrid. Operation of grid inverters supplied by PV arrays in urban environments, encounters challenges such as partial shading and soiling. Emulation of the current-voltage characteristics of PV arrays enables repeated and reliable testing of inverter operation under irregular supply conditions. It has been shown that finding the maximum power point can be challenging under conditions of partial shading and soiling. Additionally, meeting the grid quality standards for the delivered power represents a challenge. Satisfying these requirements can be achieved through careful design of LCL filters at inverter output terminals, but further improvement can be achieved only through an adequate selection of the primary controller. To further improve the quality of grid currents, the possibility of applying innovative control algorithms has been demonstrated for laboratory inverters. Application of sliding mode controllers, besides ensuring system robustness, can prevent overshoots and fault responses from the current protection circuit by introducing a specific anti-windup structure. © 2024 IEEE.

Distributed generation in combination with switching adaptive loads providing optimized energy management in the prosumers' installations results in bidirectional active energy flow. If the changes are frequent or even periodical with period close to the aggregation time window of standard revenue meters, the deviation from really correct readings in export and import registers might be significant. Subsequently, the concepts of allocating the costs of distribution system operation to the network users might fail. The paper presents an overview of the active energy metrics, which are either already implemented in revenue meters or derived from other applications of active power measurement. In the paper, a set of test scenarios is proposed and analysis of the metrics ability to account for the active energy flow and, subsequently, to correctly distinguish between active energy import and export is carried out. The results show the limitations of each metric considered as a function of the frequency/rate of changes in the active energy flow direction. It is demonstrated that the performance of the most adopted metrics exhibits potentially the largest mismatch between the measurements and the actual active energy flows. © 2023 IEEE.

A lightning current measurement system for wind turbines was developed and tested in the High Voltage Laboratory at the faculty of electrical engineering and computing, University of Zagreb, to determine actual distributions of lightning current parameters in a particular wind turbine area. The output of the measurement system is a waveform of lightning current. The measurement system consists of two current sensors with different frequency and amplitude ranges and a real-time controller with two digitizers and a GPS module. The current sensors are Rogowski coils connected to integrators with coaxial cables. The prototype was installed on a wind turbine in a high winter lightning activity area. The current stage of development involves integrating the high-speed camera into the prototype measurement system to obtain the visual confirmation of the waveform measurements and help categorize lightning strikes into downward or upward strikes. The camera control application was developed in LabVIEW. The camera was set to trigger by the real-time controller. Also, a redundant trigger occurs when there is a change in motion in the camera frame in case the prototype measurement system fails to register a lightning strike and therefore fails to send a trigger signal to the camera. The camera control application was tested in the High Voltage Laboratory by recording a flashover in a spark gap and a flashover on the insulator.

A geographic information system-based modelling, analysing and visualising of low voltage networks: The potential of demand time-shifting in the power quality improvement

The challenges of power quality are an emerging topic for the past couple of years due to massive changes occurring in low voltage distribution networks, being even more emphasized in the years marked by the novel COVID-19 disease affecting people’s behaviour and energy crisis increasing the awareness and need of end-users energy independence. Both of these phenomena additionally stress the need for changes in the planning and operation of distribution networks as the traditional consumption patterns of the end-users are significantly different. To overcome these challenges it is necessary to develop tools and methods that will help Distribution System Operators (DSOs). In this paper, we present a geographic information system (GIS)based tool that, by using open source technologies, identifies and removes errors both in the GIS data, representing a distribution network, and in the consumption data collected from the smart meters. After processing the initial data, a mathematical model of the network is created, and the impact of COVID-19-related scenarios on power quality (PQ) indicators voltage magnitude, voltage unbalance factor (VUF), and total voltage harmonic distortion (THDu) are calculated using the developed harmonic analysis extension of the pandapower simulation tool. The analyses are run on a real-world low voltage network and real consumption data for different periods reflecting different COVID-19-related periods. The results of simulations are visualised using a GIS tool, and based on the results, time periods that are most affected by the change of end-users characteristial behaviour are detected. The potential of the end-users in the PQ improvement is investigated and an algorithm that shifts consumption to more adequate time periods is implemented. After modifying the consumption curve, power quality analysis is made for newly created scenarios. The massive penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) encourages the provision of frequency regulation services at the distribution network level following large frequency disturbances occurring at the transmission system side. The availability of reduced-order or aggregated models will facilitate the coordination between transmission and distribution system operators. As there are no models that can capture the dynamics of diverse distributed technologies and their control systems by a unified single device model, this paper presents the single equivalent device based on the virtual synchronous machine (VSM) technology that can subsume the frequency response of different DER and loads. The validation of the proposed model is performed on the adjusted IEEE 9-bus system for different multi-energy systems. Simulated scenarios have demonstrated the accuracy of proposed aggregation with a maximum relative error of 0.1% as well as computational improvement of almost 100%.

Current major changes in distribution systems require better monitoring from energy utilities to prevent possible issues in the form of deterioration of power quality and stability, voltage oscillations, and many others. However, distribution networks are still characterized by their limited observability, where information such as switching state and line parameters are not known. This constraint further complicates analyses concerning the observations of distribution networks. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology that, as an answer to these problems, offers machine learning-based algorithms that aim to determine the switching state and line parameters of distribution networks using only collected historical Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) measurements. This model was tested on the radial IEEE 33-bus benchmark system and both meshed and radial real-world distribution networks. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide an accurate estimation of line parameters and network topology relying only on voltage magnitudes and active and reactive power measurements.

This paper presents the loss and thermal analysis of a high speed PMSM design, which is planned for 8 kW, 100 000 rpm electrically assisted turbocharger. Utilizing the Ansys MOTOR-CAD software, FEA-simulation approach is provided. At first, flux density saturation and losses are evaluated for operating speed range. Based on loss model, thermal analysis of the machine is provided, considering additional fluid cooling. The results are given in form of thermal model evaluation and temperature maps of the machine. Cooling requirements are discussed according to the simulation results. © 2022 IEEE.

Arc flash analysis during short circuit failure is an exciting issue that has significant implications for electrical design, management, maintenance, and operation of power systems. In this paper, a typical power system of a milk factory with voltage levels of 33kV, 11kV, and 0.4kV are considered for arc flash analysis on the platform of ETAP. The computation results show that the arc flash incident energies at some buses of the system are very high with the index of personal protective equipment (PPE) at the extreme danger level, and hence, the remedial procedure is inevitable. The two mitigation solutions of using low arc mode and arc flash detection relay are then verified. The latter strategy is demonstrated to be able to reduce the incident energy of arc flash at the dangerous buses to the level 2 of PPE, and hence, this method is recommended to apply for handling the arc flash hazard in this power system. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing.
