The fields of electrical and computer engineering are subjected to constant change regarding their domain knowledge. Technologies, programming languages, environments, and development approaches change reflecting industry needs and formal education programs. But it is not just what needs to be known that influences this change. It is also the interest of electrical and computer engineering students. Some of the factors affecting students’ decisions about their profiling during their studies are their intrinsic motivation and interests, their career and pay prospects, but also hard limits like enrollment caps on a study program or availability of a potential mentor. This paper explores the interests of two consecutive generations of electrical and computer engineering freshmen regarding their future professional focus. Students' assignment was to choose and research a topic they would be interested to work on during their studies and find a potential mentor who could supervise their work. The answers collected from more than 600 students per generation regarding their chosen topic of interest were clustered to identify topics of most or least interest as well as changes in those topics between years. The interests that students have expressed are reflective of their perception of popular electrical and computer engineering topics like artificial intelligence or mobile app programming. Students’ reported interests are discussed as information that can be useful for faculty-level decision-making, either to try to affect students’ perceptions and interests for certain topics and study programs or to plan for restructuring. © 2021 Proceedings - SEFI 49th Annual Conference: Blended Learning in engineering Education: Challenging, Enlightening - and Lasting?. This paper presents a new approach to proactive reactive scheduling of stochastic resource-constrained project scheduling problems with known probability distributions of activity durations. To facilitate the search for cost-flexible proactive schedules that are adjustable and incur lower expected cost of future rescheduling, a new family of cost-based flexibility measures is introduced. Under these measures, cost is incurred on each rescheduling while taking into account the temporal distance of changes in the baseline schedule. We propose a new model that describes the integrated approach using the proposed cost-based flexibility measures where, in each stage, reactive scheduling can adjust the baseline schedule to accommodate flexibility and quality requirements. The model is based on bounded stochastic shortest path with finite state and action spaces. The commonly used schedule stability measure is put in the context of proposed family of flexibility measures and contrasted to them in the terms of project execution system properties. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Power system frequency response analysis is generally conducted on a single-area power system model due to fast and simple calculations. However, to obtain more accurate results of the system frequency dynamics, a frequency response analysis should be conducted on a multi-area power system model. In a multi-area power system, the frequency during disturbances can manifest itself differently in certain areas in the initial moments following a disturbance. As a result, generating units located in the distant areas contribute to the primary frequency control (PFC) with a certain time delay due to wave propagation. To overcome this issue, this paper introduces a novel method for a PFC mechanism. The main goal is to allow generators in remote areas to start changing the output power earlier, much before the wave propagates to that area. To achieve the desired result, the control of battery energy storage systems (BESS) during participating in PFC is modified to follow the tie-line power flow changes, while turbine generators of synchronous generators receive the frequency signal depending on the disturbance location area. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, the results are obtained by simulating a three-area power system model. © 2022 IET Conference Proceedings. All rights reserved.

A class-E resonant converter operating at 2 MHz is designed and characterized. The values of the inductive and capacitive components used in the designed converter are calculated using a set of mathematical equations. Time-domain measurements are performed to analyze the steady-state operation of the designed converter and to verify an impact of the converter parameters on the zero-voltage-switching behavior. An impact of switching frequency on output voltage and impact of duty cycle on zero-voltage-switching effect is analyzed. Finally, conducted electromagnetic emissions of the converter are measured at the nominal operating point. © 2023 MIPRO Croatian Society.

Despite great potential in the use of new technologies, which make it pobible to communicate, acceb information and generally increase the quality of life for people with disabilities and the elderly, there are still accebibility barriers that they experience while using different ICT solutions. The paper presents research undertaken with the goal to provide solution for enhancing web site accebibility and to remove some of barriers these user groups experience while consuming web-content. Paper presents research projects in the area, gives an overview of guidelines and recommendations for ensuring accebibility and discubes results of accebibility analysis of Croatian most visited desktop and mobile web sites. Based on these results, a software solution for web accebibility improvement is proposed in the paper for the selected case study web site. The solution is based on front-end adaptation of the web site content presentation by using technologies CSS, JQuery and JavaScript. Paper also discubes shortcomings of existing accebibility checking tools that were identified through the analysis of the web sites with improved accebibility. © 2015 IEEE.

Geospatial Big Data refers to spatial datasets exceeding the capacity of current computing systems. These datasets usually contain millions of vector geometries (such as points, polygons and linestrings) that are used to represent the spatial component of geographic features. Each geometry consists of one or more interconnected vertices, where each vertex describes a geographic location. Due to its large volume or high frequency of generation, Geospatial Big Data must be stored and processed in a distributed manner, usually using an open-source Big Data platform such as Apache Spark. This often requires serialization and deserialization of geometries when sending and receiving them among distributed computers. Therefore, the performance of serialization and deserialization has a significant impact on the overall processing performance of Geospatial Big Data. In this paper, we first briefly present seven popular Java serialization frameworks that can work with geometries and then experimentally evaluate and compare their serialization and deserialization performance on Geospatial Big Data. © 2022 University of Split, FESB.

Laser range sensors (LRS) are ubiquitous in mobile robotics. They are usually modeled as having statistical error only, despite some having systematic error (bias) documented. This paper deals with bias estimation for laser range sensors in order to produce better calibration for two LRS. Assuming both LRS sense in the same plane, we propose an algorithm to estimate position and orientation of the second laser in the coordinate frame of the first laser, or vice versa. In order to truly have corresponding points in two LRS scans, we propose a calibration target. We use cylindrical objects of known radius, placed in the field of view of both LRS, perpendicularly to the sensing plane. Centers of circles that result from the intersection of the sensing plane and cylindrical objects then become corresponding points. Our algorithm first estimates cylinder centers, together with their respective uncertainties, and then using those results produces Euclidean transform estimate, together with it's respective uncertainty. The results of this algorithm can be used to gather very precise ground truth for people tracking applications with LRS. In case of occlusions, one has obvious benefits from two or more different viewpoints. © 2012 IFAC.

The basic methodology in designing a transmissive or reflective power-Amplifying metasurface is explained. Ensuring stability is recognized as the greatest challenge in the design. Whenever standard two-port amplifiers are used for power amplification, the stability is ensured by minimizing the input-output coupling, which inevitably leads to polarization selection, polarization conversion and nonreciprocal response of reflective metasurfaces. If these effects are not desirable, reflection amplifiers may be used. Reflection amplifiers based on negative-impedance converters employ a positive and a negative feedback loop to generate negative resistance required for power amplification, which makes them even more prone to instability. Their stability depends directly on the impedance of the radiating element. A reliable approach to stability analysis of reflection amplifiers based on negative-impedance converters is not yet available. © 2020 IEEE.

The transition towards carbon neutral power system comes with an increasing level of uncertainty, both on the production side from renewable energy sources (RES) but also from the consumption side such as electric vehicles (EV s), Broad penetration of EV s in the power system with uncontrolled charging will lead to undesired voltage and current limits violations, security issues and the unnecessary high cost of network reinforcement. To prevent voltage unbalance, harmonics, congestion and to reduce network losses, smart charging of EV s is necessary. Controllable charging can help in mitigating network issues and in the same time increase the quality of supply through ancillary service provision, such as voltage and frequency control. Different optimization techniques are used in the literature (direct optimization, heuristics, game theory, and machine learning) based on the type and complexity of the problem, desired computational time and the need for the global optimal solution. In the line with this, the contribution of this paper is to provide insight in different optimization techniques used for aggregation and smart EV charging with a focus on the different group types of optimization algorithms and benefits from the controlled operation of EV in the power system and different types of markets (energy market, reserve market, balancing market). © 2022 IEEE.

Media literacy is usually defined as the ability to be aware, access, evaluate, and produce media content. Additionally, it also includes the ability to critically consider not just the content, but the intentions and values of those who produce and distribute media. In today's online world polluted by fake news and biased media, the importance of media literacy is indisputable. The aim of the research is to examine the media literacy of first-year undergraduate engineering students, as well as students' perceptions and behavior related to some media literacy aspects. Survey results provide an insight into students' perceptions of their media habits and suggest students believe they have a decent knowledge of media literacy-related concepts, as well as skills and confidence needed for handling information found online. © 2022 Croatian Society MIPRO.
