A geographic information system-based modelling, analysing and visualising of low voltage networks: The potential of demand time-shifting in the power quality improvement

The challenges of power quality are an emerging topic for the past couple of years due to massive changes occurring in low voltage distribution networks, being even more emphasized in the years marked by the novel COVID-19 disease affecting people’s behaviour and energy crisis increasing the awareness and need of end-users energy independence. Both of these phenomena additionally stress the need for changes in the planning and operation of distribution networks as the traditional consumption patterns of the end-users are significantly different. To overcome these challenges it is necessary to develop tools and methods that will help Distribution System Operators (DSOs). In this paper, we present a geographic information system (GIS)based tool that, by using open source technologies, identifies and removes errors both in the GIS data, representing a distribution network, and in the consumption data collected from the smart meters. After processing the initial data, a mathematical model of the network is created, and the impact of COVID-19-related scenarios on power quality (PQ) indicators voltage magnitude, voltage unbalance factor (VUF), and total voltage harmonic distortion (THDu) are calculated using the developed harmonic analysis extension of the pandapower simulation tool. The analyses are run on a real-world low voltage network and real consumption data for different periods reflecting different COVID-19-related periods. The results of simulations are visualised using a GIS tool, and based on the results, time periods that are most affected by the change of end-users characteristial behaviour are detected. The potential of the end-users in the PQ improvement is investigated and an algorithm that shifts consumption to more adequate time periods is implemented. The massive penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) encourages the provision of frequency regulation services at the distribution network level following large frequency disturbances occurring at the transmission system side. The availability of reduced-order or aggregated models will facilitate the coordination between transmission and distribution system operators. As there are no models that can capture the dynamics of diverse distributed technologies and their control systems by a unified single device model, this paper presents the single equivalent device based on the virtual synchronous machine (VSM) technology that can subsume the frequency response of different DER and loads. The validation of the proposed model is performed on the adjusted IEEE 9-bus system for different multi-energy systems. Simulated scenarios have demonstrated the accuracy of proposed aggregation with a maximum relative error of 0.1% as well as computational improvement of almost 100%.

A lightning current measurement system for wind turbines was developed and tested in the High Voltage Laboratory at the faculty of electrical engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, to determine actual distributions of lightning current parameters in a particular wind turbine area. The output of the measurement system is a waveform of lightning current. The measurement system consists of two current sensors with different frequency and amplitude ranges and a real-time controller with two digitizers and a GPS module. The current sensors are Rogowski coils connected to integrators with coaxial cables. The prototype was installed on a wind turbine in a high winter lightning activity area. The current stage of development involves integrating the high-speed camera into the prototype measurement system to obtain the visual confirmation of the waveform measurements and help categorize lightning strikes into downward or upward strikes. The camera control application was developed in LabVIEW. The camera was set to trigger by the real-time controller. Also, a redundant trigger occurs when there is a change in motion in the camera frame in case the prototype measurement system fails to register a lightning strike and therefore fails to send a trigger signal to the camera. The camera control application was tested in the High Voltage Laboratory by recording a flashover in a spark gap and a flashover on the insulator.

Current major changes in distribution systems require better monitoring from energy utilities to prevent possible issues in the form of deterioration of power quality and stability, voltage oscillations, and many others. However, distribution networks are still characterized by their limited observability, where information such as switching state and line parameters are not known. This constraint further complicates analyses concerning the observations of distribution networks. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology that, as an answer to these problems, offers machine learning-based algorithms that aim to determine the switching state and line parameters of distribution networks using only collected historical Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) measurements. This model was tested on the radial IEEE 33-bus benchmark system and both meshed and radial real-world distribution networks. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide an accurate estimation of line parameters and network topology relying only on voltage magnitudes and active and reactive power measurements.

A huge area with enormous number of inhabitants isn’t electrified in Africa. Although the electricity generation and distribution technology is given, the speed of network development and construction is limited by financial, material and human resources. A short term decision has to be done where to develop the network that should fit also in the long term plans. On one hand the high voltage (HV) network can be developed step by step but in this case the remote territories will be electrified decades later and masses of people will migrate to the metropoles. It has huge financial and social costs as well. Another possibility to set up independent small scale microgrid-minigrid but it is not a competitor of the bulk net in large scale. It should be connected soon or later to the national grid. Mapping the problem to an optimization task we can find the optimal ratio between the bulk- and microgrid developments at a given resource constraints. We find that the HV network should reach the neighbouring areas meanwhile the microgrids should be set up at the fares region.

Voltage stability methods for power distribution systems need to be constantly improved as consequence of the evolution towards smart grids, considering the prevention of voltage instability expansion to the transmission system level. The article aims to present an alternative assessment technique based on singular value decomposition adapted for distribution network particularities in order to identify the singular values that describe the general vulnerability of the system and the boundary of the stable operating domain. For the validation of the proposed method, two benchmark distribution networks are analyzed. Subsequently, the method is used to indicate the critical point of voltage collapse and the maximum power capability or to identify weak areas in terms of triggering the instability mechanism, taking in consideration the influence of distributed generation. © 2021 IEEE.

Stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) systems have been used in remote electrification for decades due to their low infrastructure cost and clean energy source. However, their dependency on environmental conditions is a concerning issue. Therefore, backup energy storage is required along with a Maximum power Point Tracking technique (MPPT). A dc-dc converter is usually used to implement MPPT before the inversion stage resulting in two-stage architecture. Meanwhile, single-stage conversion systems offer superior privileges in reducing the overall system's complexity, size, and cost. Among the single-stage boosting topologies, Split-Source Inverter (SSI) has been offered as an option with some advantages over the commonly used Z-source Inverter (ZSI). This paper presents step-by-step design procedures for a stand-alone PV system, including SSI and a Battery Storage System (BSS). Moreover, the small-signal model of the proposed system is analyzed to develop a robust control with superior dynamic characteristics. Finally, the control scheme is analyzed and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink. © 2021 IEEE.

Distribution system state estimation is becoming an increasingly important feature in the modern power grid, but the lack of real measurements makes its implementation particularly difficult. A solution for this problem could be the implementation of Artificial Neural Networks for direct distribution system state estimation. In our work, we created an ANN-based distribution system state estimation which can function based on sparse data, the accuracy of the ANN-based state estimation can be further improved utilizing a separated distribution system state estimation (S-ANN), which estimates the state of the network separately according to measurement type based on the same input data. With this method, the root mean square error and standard deviation of the state estimation can be significantly decreased. © 2023 IEEE.

This study deals with the coordination of surge protection devices (SPD) in photovoltaic systems (PV). A PV farm model was developed in MATLAB Simulink with all the main components, solar panels, converter, grounding system, power transformer, cables in the DC and AC branches with their capacitances, and surge protection device throughout the installation. It was found that when lightning strikes the grounding system or in the vicinity of the PV installation, the coordination among SPD types 1, 2, and 3 is lost. Miscoordination can cause damage to several elements of the PV system, mainly the inverters. Finally, solutions were proposed to avoid SPD miscoordination during lightning strikes.

Recently,multimodal multiobjective optimization problems(MMOPs)have received increasing *** goal is to find a Pareto front and as many equivalent Pareto optimal solutions as *** some evolutionary algorithms for them have been proposed,they mainly focus on the convergence rate in the decision space while ignoring solutions *** this paper,we propose a new multiobjective fireworks algorithm for them,which is able to balance exploitation and exploration in the decision *** first extend a latest single-objective fireworks algorithm to handle *** we make improvements by incorporating an adaptive strategy and special archive guidance into it,where special archives are established for each firework,and two strategies(i.e.,explosion and random strategies)are adaptively selected to update the positions of sparks generated by fireworks with the guidance of special ***,we compare the proposed algorithm with eight state-of-the-art multimodal multiobjective algorithms on all 22 MMOPs from CEC2019 and several imbalanced distance minimization *** results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to compared algorithms in solving ***,its runtime is less than its peers'.
