Utilization of microgrids is an integral part of the efforts for increased resiliency and deep integration of renewable energy sources in the power systems, as they allow maximization of the use of locally available resources and operational harmonization of internally interconnected parts of the power systems - either in grid-connected or island mode. Development of laboratory setups for studying different aspects of microgrids has been recognized as a valuable tool for preparation of the real-life implementation. In this paper we present a developed AC/DC laboratory setup that incorporates solar photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage, an electric vehicle charger, a small hydro power plant, electronically controllable loads, as well as resistors and inductors that replicate the topology of the CIGRE low-voltage distribution network. Harmonized operation of the elements of the microgrid is ensured by the implemented supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. To demonstrate wide potential of the developed setup, we present the results of several experiments in this paper.

Local energy trading (LET) in electrical distribution grid is a concept that implies energy trading between active participants on a local level. Along with it, some market operators and distribution system operators (DSOs) consider adoption of a transactive energy paradigm in distribution system management by providing dynamic price signals to prosumers located in low-voltage grid, based on the conditions in the medium and high-voltage grid. The aim is to increase distribution network reliability on market principles. This work presents a framework for participation of DSOs in LET. LET is simulated as an auction-based platform over a modified IEEE European Low Voltage Test Feeder where methods for active DSO's participation are tested and impacts on power flows and voltages researched. In the case study analysis, the implementation of LEM doubled the local solar PV production in a point where all households had solar PV s and no upstream exports were allowed. The contributions to prevention of voltage deviations were also achieved, but regular voltage management under this paradigm would require new tasks for the DSOs.

Addressing uncertainty has become a necessity when modeling modern power systems. Many state-of-the-art methods suffer from either poor uncertainty characterization or a high computational burden. This paper proposes a model that is easy to implement, fast to compute, and effective in addressing uncertainty. It is based on the model predictive control algorithm with the addition of uncertainty parameters optimization. For demonstration purposes, the model is applied to a microgrid consisting of a wind turbine, a local load, and battery energy storage. The model seeks to satisfy the local demand at the lowest cost by procuring energy from the battery energy storage, the wind turbine (in its portfolio), or the wholesale market, where wind power output, local demand, and market prices are uncertain parameters. In the presented case study, the upper bounds obtained using our model are close to the perfect information deterministic model values. Hence, this model has a great potential for practical use.

In this letter, a novel topology of a non-isolated high voltage gain dc-dc converter is proposed. The topology is based on the diode-capacitor voltage multiplier stages, integrated with inductor-based boost stages at the input. Due to reduced voltage imbalance between the voltage multiplier stage capacitors the design features low spikes in the switch current. Consequently the switch current stress, as well as conduction and switching losses are reduced accordingly. The proposed converter can draw continuous current either as a multiport converter from two input sources or from a single source as an interleaved converter and achieves a voltage gain of 15 with two voltage multiplier stages. A 400 W prototype of the converter with V_in = 20 V and V_out = 300 V has been implemented to validate the enhancement. © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Response of energy storage units and power plants to a set-point change is not necessarily linear with a constant ramp rate, especially for frequency containment services Which are actuated on a $\leq$ 30s time scale. This is because real systems have time lag in their dynamic behavior Which will cause the output to behave nonlinearly before settling down. This paper shows how to implement this behavior into the linear programming optimization framework using settling time constants of a common energy storage system and power plants. Simulation results show that if linear programming is used to model the units participating in the frequency containment services, neglecting the settling time constraints can lead to decisions Which may not be grid-compliant in practice.

With the development of technologies and the decrease of prices, the number of end-users that decide to invest in distributed energy resources (DERs) continuously grows. Despite the improvement of financial and environmental aspects of the power system operation, a growing share of DERs can cause numerous technical challenges for distribution system operators (DSOs). Besides the integration of DERs, the novel COVID-19 disease created additional challenges for DSOs in 2020 and 2021. Due to a large number of single-phase loads and DERs, the increased consumption, the number of nonlinear loads, and power electronic devices in a distribution network, many challenges are related to power quality (PQ). In this paper, realistic case studies that consider anomalies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and integration of DERs are presented. By using pandapower and its newly developed extension, different PQ indicators are calculated and the values of voltage magnitude, voltage unbalance factor (VUF), and total harmonic distortion (THD) are compared through different scenarios. In addition, the impact of a transformer’s vector group on the PQ indicators’ propagation through the observed distribution network is analyzed. In a conclusion, the optimal vector group, that successfully mitigates or at least decreases the values of PQ indicators and their propagation is proposed.

The continuous development of distributed generation and renewable energy resources has a significant impact on microgrids today. This paper summarizes the main concept of a microgrid, the status of the literature, ongoing developments, and the relevant standards. This paper has covered the aspects of a generical microgrid system, its control and development for the improvement of power quality. The outputs of hydrogen-based studies on microgrids are designed to aid in the future development of secure, reliable, and stable real-life networks with greater penetration of renewable energy sources.

Distribution networks are poorly observable, which is especially evident in different analyses of low voltage (LV) networks, where observability is decreased by the reduced number of smart meters and the lack of network data. Smart meters are in most cases used only for measuring consumption data, while other important information, such as the phase connection of end-users, is not adequately monitored. This aggravates the problem of phase identification for energy utilities, which consequently complicates the numerous calculations required for the smooth operation of the distribution network. In this paper, a comparison of voltage and consumption measurements-based phase identification is presented. Furthermore, a machine learning model based on the voltage measurements is extended to correctly identify the phases of end-users which are three-phase connected to an LV network. The model is tested on a simple 18-node network and the IEEE benchmark network with over 100 nodes and more than 50 end-users. Even though the results show a possibility of using both methods in simpler cases, the voltage measurement-based method is more robust and leads to smaller error in the phase detection problem but also can be extended and used in the case of three-phase connected end-users.

The hybrid energy storage system (HESS) in electric vehicles (EVs) is introduced to reduce battery stress and improve the capture of regenerative braking power. The most common HESS configuration for EV consists of a high voltage battery pack and supercapacitors. There are various possible HESS topologies for EVs. In this paper, a comparison between two possible HESS topologies are considered, namely the semi-active HESS and the passive HESS. The effectiveness of these configurations is analyzed through simulations conducted on an EV conversion MyVi, installed with 30. 2kWh Li-ion battery. The simulation results based on NEDC clearly demonstrate the advantages of using a HESS over a vehicle with a battery as the sole energy storage system. However, the passive HESS, which lacks control and relies on internal resistance and State of Charges (SoCs) for power flow, only slightly reduces the battery discharge rate, failing to meet one of the main purposes of a HESS. On the other hand, the semi-active HESS, equipped with a bidirectional DC-DC converter and controller, effectively limits the battery discharge rate, optimizes power flow management, and maximizes the utilization of both the battery pack and the supercapacitor (SC) bank. The semi-active HESS achieves a longer travel range of approximately 228.2km compared to 211.5km for the passive HESS. Moreover, the semiactive topology successfully minimizes battery usage by recapturing regenerative braking energy, with a recaptured energy value of -0.06kWh, whereas the passive topology only achieves -0.68kWh. The semi-active HESS also exhibits a lower battery RMS current value of 39.00A compared to 46.46A for the passive HESS. Additionally, the semi-active topology utilizes the SC bank more efficiently, supplying almost double the energy compared to the passive topology (6.35kWh vs. 3.29kWh).
