Model predictive control is an exciting control technique that has been applied successfully to multiphase induction machines. The possibility to include several constraints by using only the cost function is one of its main attractive characteristics. However, this latter implies the nontrivial task of adequately tuning the weighting factors to fulfil multiple control objectives properly. This paper proposes a sequential model predictive torque control of a six-phase induction machine that avoids using the weighting factor. Simulation studies are provided to show the effectiveness of this proposal showing good reference tracking of the torque, flux and stator $\alpha-\beta$ and $x-y$ currents.

At present, cancer is one of the most important health issues in the world. Because early detection and appropriate treatment in cancer are very effective in the recovery and survival of patients, image processing as a diagnostic tool can help doctors to diagnose in the first recognition of cancer. One of the most important steps in diagnosing a skin lesion is to automatically detect the border of the skin image because the accuracy of the next steps depends on it. If these subtleties are identified, they can have a great impact on the diagnosis of the disease. Therefore, there is a good opportunity to develop more accurate algorithms to analyze such images. This paper proposes an improved method for segmentation and classification for skin lesions using two architectures, the U-Net for image segmentation and the DenseNet121 for image classification which have excellent accuracy. We tested the segmentation architecture of our model on the ISIC-2018 dataset and the classification on the HAM10000 dataset. Our results show that the combination of U-Net and DenseNet121 architectures provides acceptable results in dermatoscopic image analysis compared to previous research. Another classification examined in this study is cancerous and non-cancerous samples. In this classification, cancerous and non-cancerous samples were detected in DenseNet121 network with 79.49% and 93.11% accuracy respectively. © 2021, CC BY.

The Government of Indonesia is encouraging investments in renewable energy based power plants in Indonesia, including wind power plants (WPPs). Two large WPPs in the Southern Sulawesi interconnected power system are Sidrap WPPs and Jeneponto WPPs. Both Sidrap WPP and Jeneponto WPP are the largest WPPs in Indonesia and they account for significant contribution for the Southern Sulawesi power generation mix. Considering the intermittency characteristics of WPPs and system's failure probability, therefore it is essential to assess the system's stability after their integration. This work evaluates the frequency stability of the Southern Sulawesi interconnected power system with the integration of both Sidrap WPPs and Jeneponto WPPs. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

An efficient model predictive control (MPC) method with a low computational load is presented in this paper for five-level active neutral point clamped (5L-ANPC) converter. Three control objectives are considered in the developed control algorithm; current control, flying capacitor (FC) control and dc-link balancing. The proposed FCS-MPC method avoids the heavy calculation load required for the current prediction by exploiting the concept of the dead-beat predictive control method. Furthermore, the cost function evaluations per control sample are significantly reduced compared to traditional FCS-MPC. As a consequence, the execution time is considerably reduced. The validation of the proposed method in transient- and steady-state is verified by the experimental implementation. The performance is compared with the conventional FCS-MPC method.

Fibers have been a crucial element in the development of textiles. This is attributed to the numerous advantages fibers provide, including the production of stronger and long-lasting cloths. Moreover, synthetic fibers are perceived as highly flexible and cost-effective materials. Due to the expansion in portable and wearable devices, the creation of intelligent and versatile fibers has been significantly boosted. Additionally, due to the intrinsic materials of fibers, such as semiconductors and electroactive materials, it is feasible to create fiber electronics. As a result, this paper focuses on fiber electronics and especially the sources of energy supply for these fibers. This paper initially starts to introduce the development of functional fibers in energy conversion and storage, with an emphasis on supercapacitors, solar cells, and nanogenerator batteries. Thereafter, the significance of fiber-shaped energy conversion and smart structural design for storage devices is examined.

Quantum Fisher information (QFI) and geometric phase have recently performed different tasks in quantum information technology. We investigate the statistical quantities as the QFI and entanglement of a three-level atom in Λ configuration interacting with a quantized field mode by using linear entropy. We study the dynamical behavior of the geometric phase based on the engineering of a three-level atomic configuration. We analyze the effect of energy dissipation of the dynamical properties of the geometric phase and the QFI as an entanglement quantifier between the three-level atom and field. We explore the correlation between the engineering geometric phase and QFI in the absence and presence of energy dissipation effect. We have found that the QFI is very sensitive to the effect of the time-dependent coupling and energy dissipation. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper presents an adaptive sliding model controller for rapid earth fault current limiters (REFCLs) in resonant grounded power distribution networks to mitigate the impacts of powerline bushfires by compensating the fault current along with the faulty phase voltage. The powerline bushfire mitigation application using REFCLs with residual current compensation (RCC) inverters requires extremely fast response from the controller used for these inverters. The proposed adaptive sliding mode controller is designed based on the global terminal sliding surface (GTSS) in conjunction with a quick reaching law in order to achieve the fast compensation of the fault current and faulty phase voltage. Furthermore, a parameter adaptation law is used to estimate the parameter of the arc suppression coil used within REFCLs so that the controller provides robustness against parametric uncertainties. Rigorous simulations are carried out on a test distribution system to justify the effectiveness this newly proposed adaptive sliding mode controller in terms of eliminating the fault current and faulty phase voltage so that the impacts of powerline bushfires are minimized. Simulation results are also compared with an integral sliding mode controller in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the adaptive sliding mode controller in terms of maintaining the performance guideline for mitigating powerline bushfires.

This paper presents the voltage stability analysis assessment of the Southern Sulawesi power system in Indonesia for the year 2020, considering the load increase every year, the addition of new power plants as well as the large additional load of smelter industries in the Bantaeng Regency. The voltage stability method used in this paper is the modal analysis method. Modal analysis method uses the Jacobian reduction matrix resulting from the Newton-Raphson power flow analysis. Modal analysis produces eigenvalues for each load bus in the system. The bus with the smallest eigenvalue becomes the focus in determining the stability of the system. Then bus participation factor is determined to obtain the most influential bus to improve the stability. The results of this study confirm that by 2020, the Southern Sulawesi power system will be in a stable condition, with the smallest eigenvalue of 5.8 in bus Pare-Pare while bus Barru has the highest bus participation factor. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Because of the harsh environmental impacts of fossil fuels, price fluctuation, and resource limitation, renewable energy resources (RERs) are considered the ultimate solution to overcome these challenges. RERs are also abundant and environmentally friendly. It has been reported that the growth rates in renewable energy installations have increased by 8–9% annually since 2010, reaching a cumulative capacity of 2.9 TW by 2020 and exceeding the growth rate for fossil resources. In this work, the different RERs have been critically discussed in terms of their operation principles, advantages, disadvantages, and associated environmental impacts, focusing on wind and solar energies as the most deployed RERs. Barriers to the full deployment of RERs to replace fossil resources are discussed. Based on the discussion presented on RERs, the contribution of deploying RERs towards the achievement of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is also critically discussed. A total of 80 indicators have been identified for RERs' contribution toward the achievement of SDGs. © 2023 The Author(s)
