This article proposes a novel design approach for miniaturized, highly selective, self-packaged, and wide-stopband filtering slot antennas based on C- and T-type folded substrate integrated waveguide (C-/T-FSIW) cavities. Firstly, two forms of FSIW cavity are explored and analyzed. A new coupled C-type half-mode FSIW (C-HMFSIW) cavities are developed. A filtering antenna is proposed, employing a C-HMFSIW cavity for feeding and a slot-loaded C-FSIW cavity for radiation. By introducing cross-coupling between different resonators, a radiation null (RN) is achieved. To further enhance bandwidth and frequency selectivity, a new antenna configuration is developed using a C-HMFSIW cavity for feeding and a slot-loaded T-FSIW cavity for radiation. After loading the radiation slot, the T-FSIW cavity serves as two parts: one as the main radiator and the other as a parasitic radiator opposite to it. This configuration increases antenna bandwidth and generates an additional RN. Interestingly, adjusting the position of the radiation slot allows the RN to switch between the upper and lower stopbands. The antennas proposed in this work exhibit good stopband performance and compact size. Three filtering antenna prototypes are designed, fabricated, and measured, showing consistent results between measurements and simulations. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Speech is a fundamental means of human interaction. Speaker Identification (SI) plays a crucial role in various applications, such as authentication systems, forensic investigation, and personal voice assistance. However, achieving robust and secure SI in both open and closed environments remains challenging. To address this issue, researchers have explored new techniques that enable computers to better understand and interact with humans. Smart systems leverage Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to mimic the human brain in identifying speakers. However, speech signals often suffer from interference, leading to signal degradation. The performance of a Speaker Identification System (SIS) is influenced by various environmental factors, such as noise and reverberation in open and closed environments, respectively. This research paper is concerned with the investigation of SI using Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) and polynomial coefficients, with an ANN serving as the classifier. To tackle the challenges posed by environmental interference, we propose a novel approach that depends on symmetric comb filters for modeling. In closed environments, we study the effect of reverberation on speech signals, as it occurs due to multiple reflections. To address this issue, we model the reverberation effect with comb filters. We explore different domains, including time, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), and Discrete Sine Transform (DST) domains for feature extraction to determine the best combination for SI in case of reverberation environments. Simulation results reveal that DWT outperforms other transforms, leading to a recognition rate of 93.75% at a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of 15 dB. Additionally, we investigate the concept of cancelable SI to ensure user privacy, while maintaining high recognition rates. Establishing early warning systems and efficient management of water resources in tidal reaches is crucial for achieving adequate flood protection. In tidal reaches, the river stage interacts non-linearly with tides (downstream) and discharge (upstream), making the modeling of river processes extremely complex. Data-driven methods have proven helpful for predicting the river stage parameter. This contrasts with existing numerical approaches, which suffer from several limitations. The aim of this study was to predict the river stage of the upstream part of the tidal river, where the influence of salinity is present during the summer months. Using the CNN-LSTM model trained on historical records of the discharge (station of the variable to be predicted), the river stage of three downstream stations, and the point of interest, the prediction was carried out up to 24 hours in advance. By incorporating feature engineering, we achieved an improvement in model results for the longest horizon, confirmed by standard performance metrics, and considered it efficient and effective for risk mitigation. Introducing feature engineering into the data preprocessing resulted in a predictive performance improvement of 0.98% for the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) metric, 7.0% for the root mean squared error (RMSE) metric, and 7.25% for the mean absolute error (MAE) metric over the second and third-best scenarios using a spectrogram and time-series data. © 2024 University of Split, FESB.

Keeping track of time is regarded as an essential human behavior. The question of how the brain deals with temporal information remains a subject of scholarly debate. The current investigation aims to explore the mechanism underlying time perception by extracting fractal dimension from an electroencephalogram (EEG) signal and its frequency bands. To accomplish this, Higuchi’s fractal dimension was calculated for 42 healthy subjects’ electroencephalogram (EEG) signal and its sub-bands during the time perception task. The EEG signal was recorded from 19 channels. Subsequently, a statistical analysis was conducted to compare participants who underestimated versus those who overestimated the elapsed time and significantly different channels were presented. The findings suggest an elevated level of fractal dimensionality in persons who displayed a tendency to overestimate time. The EEG signal and Gamma rhythm emerged as the most distinguishing signals between the two cohorts. The contrast in fractal dimension between the two groups was predominantly apparent in the parietal and central channels. To summarize, an increased level of complexity is discernible in the EEG signal and high-frequency rhythms when there is an overestimation of temporal duration. It can be asserted that the employment of FD yields presents an exceptional approach to comprehending cerebral functionalities, notably temporal perception. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Osteoporosis is a common disease characterized by low bone density and structural deterioration of bone tissue. For a successful course of treatment and fracture avoidance, early diagnosis of this disease is essential. The aim was to provide a novel method for osteoporosis prediction using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based framework. The purpose was to predict the likelihood of osteoporosis based on the Bone Mineral Density (BMD), along with other characteristics such as age, weight, height, gender, and Body Mass Index (BMI) extracted from medical reports and images collected from a comprehensive medical center in Lebanon. Three machine-learning algorithms were implemented and tested, Logistic Regression (LR), Support Vector Machines (SVM), and Decision Trees (DT). Variety of quantitative statistical metrics were used to evaluate the performance of our framework, upon training and testing our algorithms. The metrics that were employed to evaluate our results included accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and F-score, in addition to the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) Curve and the Area Under the Curve (AUC). Experimental Results demonstrated that both the SVM and LR algorithms achieved the highest accuracy of detection of osteoporosis as compared to existing algorithms applied in this field, with an accuracy of 89%. The sensitivity of diagnosis obtained was 98% by LR and 97% by SVM and surpassed the sensitivity obtained by DT. As such LR showed the best performance. The output of the algorithms could help medical doctors assess patients automatically. These findings demonstrated the potential of AI in osteoporosis prediction and thus prevention, highlighting the significance of early diagnosis. Thereby as a future prospect, choosing carefully the framework is crucial and additional algorithms have to be considered and tested. © 2023 IEEE.

Stress tolerance plays a vital role in ensuring the effectiveness of piezoresistive sensing films used in flexible pressure ***,existing methods for enhancing stress tolerance employ dome-shaped,wrinkle-shaped,and pyramidal-shaped microstructures in intricate molding and demolding processes,which introduce significant fabrication challenges and limit the sensing *** address these shortcomings,this paper presents periodic microslits in a sensing film made of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and polydimethylsiloxane to realize ultrahigh stress tolerance with a theoretical maximum of 2.477 MPa and a sensitivity of 18.092 kPa−*** periodic microslits permit extensive deformation under high pressure(e.g.,400 kPa)to widen the detection ***,the periodic microslits also enhance the sensitivity based on simultaneously exhibiting multiple synapses within the sensing interface and between the periodic sensing *** proposed solution is verified by experiments using sensors based on the microslit strategy for wind direction detection,robot movement sensing,and human health *** these experiments,vehicle load detection is achieved for ultrahigh pressure sensing under an ultrahigh pressure of over 400 kPa and a ratio of the contact area to the total area of 32.74%.The results indicate that the proposed microslit strategy can achieve ultrahigh stress tolerance while simplifying the fabrication complexity of preparing microstructure sensing films.

Within the electronic design automation(EDA) domain, artificial intelligence(AI)-driven solutions have emerged as formidable tools, yet they typically augment rather than redefine existing methodologies. These solutions often repurpose deep learning models from other domains, such as vision, text, and graph analytics, applying them to circuit design without tailoring to the unique complexities of electronic circuits. Such an “AI4EDA” approach falls short of achieving a holistic design synthesis and understanding,overlooking the intricate interplay of electrical, logical, and physical facets of circuit data. This study argues for a paradigm shift from AI4EDA towards AI-rooted EDA from the ground up, integrating AI at the core of the design process. Pivotal to this vision is the development of a multimodal circuit representation learning technique, poised to provide a comprehensive understanding by harmonizing and extracting insights from varied data sources, such as functional specifications, register-transfer level(RTL) designs, circuit netlists,and physical layouts. We champion the creation of large circuit models(LCMs) that are inherently multimodal, crafted to decode and express the rich semantics and structures of circuit data, thus fostering more resilient, efficient, and inventive design methodologies. Embracing this AI-rooted philosophy, we foresee a trajectory that transcends the current innovation plateau in EDA, igniting a profound “shift-left” in electronic design methodology. The envisioned advancements herald not just an evolution of existing EDA tools but a revolution, giving rise to novel instruments of design-tools that promise to radically enhance design productivity and inaugurate a new epoch where the optimization of circuit performance, power, and area(PPA) is achieved not incrementally, but through leaps that redefine the benchmarks of electronic systems' capabilities.
