Multimedia communications have evolved rapidly during the last few years and they now require communication services with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). For the type of these new distributed multimedia applications, it is crucial to monitor continuously the current QoS parameters of a connection to ensure that they comply with the pre-arranged negotiated values. The method proposed in this paper suggests the use of QoS monitoring agents in the ATM switches as well as in the end systems, in a way that allows automatic recovery, if possible, from all the QoS violations. The recovery will be achieved by redistributing the levels of QoS that should be supported immediately by a component to meet the end-to-end requirements. An initial architecture is proposed as well as the communication protocol between the agents and future directions are given.

This paper describes a Virtual Environment system designed to aid in training interventional radiologists in inferior vena cava filter placement. It is being developed as part of a VE simulator for a number of surgical and interventional radiology procedures at the laboratory for Advanced computer Applications in Medicine at the George Washington University. In this procedure a filter is placed in the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from the lower portion of the body from reaching the lungs and causing a pulmonary embolus. The simulation is designed to provide both tutorial and testing modes for the filter placement procedure.

Temporal load-balancing - "spreading out" the executions of tasks over time - is desirable in many applications. A form of temporal load-balancing is discussed: scheduling to maximize minimum global inter-completion time (MGICT-scheduling). It is shown that MGICT-scheduling is, in general, NP-hard. A number of restricted classes of task systems are identified, which can be efficiently MGICT-scheduled.

The main objective of the research project reported in this paper is to design an assistive device that will help patients with eye-implant to have natural eye movement. The patients lose their eye for various reasons. The loss of an eye can be solved by the ocular implant. The artificial eye can be made like a real eye cosmetically. But the problem is that it is static and does not have the natural movement of an eye. We design an ocular assistive system to enable the artificial eye have the natural movement of a real eye. This paper starts with the literature review of the eye movement detection methods and followed by the description of the experimental system we designed and constructed. The paper is concluded with further considerations.

We propose a 1-wavelength loop type dielectric chip antenna that meets the demand for antennas with unidirectional radiation patterns for portable communication devices. The structure of the proposed antenna is shown. The radiating element printed loop is on the top of the cube. A feeding strip line is on one of the vertical face of the cube and a shorted plate parallel to the feeding strip line is on the same face. The conductive plane is on the bottom of the cube. By printing all of conductive elements on a ceramic cube this novel antenna is easy to fabricate.

The intershell spacing of multi-walled carbon nanotubes was determined by analyzing the high resolution transmission electron microscopy images of these nanotubes. For the nanotubes that were studied, the intershell spacing d^002 is found to range from 0.34 to 0.39 nm, increasing with decreasing tube diameter. A model based on the results from real space image analysis is used to explain the variation in intershell spacings obtained from reciprocal space periodicity analysis. The increase in intershell spacing with decreased nanotube diameter is attributed to the high curvature, resulting in an increased repulsive force, associated with the decreased diameter of the nanotube shells.

The selected aspects of design methodology of a telemetric system for monitoring civil engineering constructions-using fiber-optic strain sensors-are considered. A particular attention is paid to the design decisions concerning the choice of a method for sensor calibration and measurand reconstruction, resulting requirements for computing power and their consequence on the distribution of data processing in the considered telemetric system. The results of this study may be applied for designing a specific telemetric system with fiber-optic sensors of strain.

Echo cancellation has been most widely studied for hands-free telephony and for cancelling line echos in telephone central offices. The problem of echo cancelling in speech dialog systems is similar, however it has some specific requirements. In this contribution, a subband echo cancellation structure is proposed which can be integrated in the feature extraction part of a recognizer. A NLMS gradient-based adaptation is performed in frequency subbands that can either be derived directly from FFT analysis of input speech signal, or by using a proposed reduced-subband approach where the number of subbands is reduced in order to lessen the aliasing effect of the FFT. A double-talk detector is proposed based on the estimated error function for decision on stopping the adaptation. Finally, a new approach of combining echo cancellation and noise reduction is proposed. © 1997 5th European Conference on Speech Communication and Technology, EUROSPEECH 1997. All rights reserved.

We have developed a Web based application to accelerate the visualization of VRML scenes located in a remote server. This application enables the user to extract only the parts of a scene that are of actual interest. The extracted parts represent one or more sub trees of the hierarchical structure of the VRML scene, and only these parts will be rendered and visualized in the local computer. By reducing the complexity (size) of the remote scene, less data are transmitted from the remote server and the rendering process becomes faster in the local computer. The application is written in Java and is executed as an applet embedded in an HTML page.
