— In recent years, time series prediction has become a highly interesting topic in various applied areas, including clinical time series analysis. Hospitals and other clinical healthcare systems collect Electronic Health Records. These records contain important information that needs to be mined. This information provides a solid basis for predicting hospital readmission, helping to improve healthcare, enhance patient outcomes, and optimize hospital resources. This study introduces a novel deep learning attention-based approach for predicting 30-day ICU readmissions using clinical time series information extracted from the MIMIC III dataset. This approach incorporates time-aware positional encoding into the attention mechanism to enhance predictive performance by capturing the temporal representation of data and considering the temporal order of clinical time series data. This model is compared with cutting-edge models. The significant enhancements in the model performance achieved by the proposed method highlight the effectiveness of incorporating time-aware positional encoding in capturing temporal dependencies and improving prediction outcomes. These results underscore the potential of advanced attention mechanisms in clinical time series analysis. ©2024 IEEE.

Seizures that take place repeatedly and without provocation are referred to as epilepsy. Epilepsy can be diagnosed with electroencephalography (EEG). One of the most influential challenges of the past few years has been the use of deep learning algorithms to replace manual inspection of medical signals by specialists, such as epilepsy signal classification. This paper presents a multi-label classification approach for epileptic seizures using deep learning. UCI machine learning repository's epileptic seizure dataset has been used to classify epileptic seizure patients. 178 features are present in each of the 11500 samples in the dataset. Based on a variety of criteria, the proposed method may have a positive impact on epilepsy diagnosis, in most cases by approximately 6% compared with existing methods utilizing long short-term memory (LSTM) and autoencoder. It is possible thus to develop and apply gated recurrent unit-based methods with good potential for categorizing EEG signals for epilepsy diagnosis based on gated recurrent unit (GRU)-CNN based methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Corona inception and growth characteristics of short sphere-plane air gaps under positive ramp high voltages with variable rate of rise are experimentally investigated. I-V characteristics were obtained through continuous monitoring and measurement of the applied voltage and discharge current. Corona initiates in the form of streamer discharge whereas at slightly higher applied voltage a stable glow is established in the gap. The inception voltage of the various corona modes is experimentally determined using several processing methods. The associated corona inception field is theoretically estimated based on electrostatic field simulations and physical modelling of the glow and streamer discharge;reasonable agreement between experimentally determined and theoretically predicted values is shown to exist. With the aid of an empirical formula accounting for the effects of applied voltage and gap length on discharge current, I-V characteristics are dynamically modelled in ATP-EMTP by developing an ATPDraw object. Using the latter, simulated I-V characteristics of bundled conductors are in excellent agreement with measurements from literature. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2023.

A Real-time Approach for Multi-physics Field Reconstruction of Active Phased Array Antenna

This study proposes an effective approach to reconstruct the multi-physics field of the active phased array antenna (APAA) through limited information of temperature and strain. First, the multi-physics coupling model of the APAA is constructed to analyze the thermal-mechanical-electromagnetic responses;the model calculation accuracy is verified by experimental testing. Then, a large number of samples containing the temperature and deformation information are generated through the coupling model. Subsequently, the multi-physics field reconstruction model is established based on the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) method, in which the parallelization computing is implemented to fully improve the prediction efficiency. Lastly, the testing samples are used to evaluate the performance of the reconstruction model. The obtained results indicate that the developed model is able to reconstruct the multi-physics field of the APAA in real time more precisely through comparing with existing machine learning methods. This approach can provide reliable temperature and displacement reconstruction information for the compensation of the APAA electromagnetic performance. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Images are widely used in social networks, necessitating efficient and secure transmission, especially in bandwidth-constrained environments. This article aims to develop a color image encryption algorithm that enhances security while optimizing computational efficiency. A novel parallel color image encryption algorithm based on the 2-D logistic-Rulkov neuron map (2D-LRNM) is proposed. In this approach, the three channels of the color image are first separated. Cross-channel information interaction is introduced to form three new channels, which are then processed in parallel. During the encryption process of each channel, a block-wise parallel encryption mechanism is applied, ensuring simultaneous encryption of each block. This block-wise strategy effectively leverages parallel computing resources and balances the task load. To meet the demand for a large number of keystreams during encryption, the 2D-LRNM is introduced. It combines the simplicity and chaotic properties of the Logistic map with the multitimescale dynamics and neurodynamic behaviors of the Rulkov map. By overcoming the dimensional limitations inherent in the single Logistic map, this approach extends the system to a 2-D framework, significantly increasing the complexity of chaotic behavior and improving its unpredictability. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed encryption algorithm achieves high security and reduces computation time by approximately 83.3%. © 2014 IEEE.

Purpose: Watermarking is one of the techniques used to protect multimedia data, and images in particular, from malicious attacks by inserting a signature into these images. However, traditional watermarking schemes encounter limitations for sensitive images such as medical images. Methods: In this work, a robust and blind watermarking approach is proposed to secure medical images exchanged in telemedicine. Marking medical images allows precise authentication of the patient and avoids confusing scans and thus avoiding diagnostic errors that can have serious consequences. In this approach, the frequency content of the image is acquired using three different transforms. Schur decomposition is then applied to the low-frequency sub-bands. Finally, the obtained upper triangular matrix values are modifier to integrate the watermark bits. Result and conclusion: Imperceptibility and robustness experimental results show that the proposed methods adequately maintain a significant quality of watermarked images and are remarkably robust against several conventional attacks. Indeed, the average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) obtained is 44.90 dB which proves that the integration process generates few distortions to the original image. For the robustness, the obtained results show that the watermark is resistant to the most common attacks used in watermarking with a normalized cross correlation rate higher than 0.9 for the majority of the attacks. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of haptic feedback in light aircraft control. It provides an overview of the results and experiences gained from a previous research project focused on the design and testing of pilot haptic feedback hardware. The objective of this paper is to outline a roadmap for the future development of "More Haptic Aircraft,"incorporating principles of human-centred design into light aircraft cockpits equipped with the presented haptic feedback device. The roadmap provides general requirements for pilot-aircraft interaction and highlights three specific levels of functions. These functions aim to reduce the pilot's workload and enhance situational awareness. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

For future Internet of Vehicles (IoV), communications and computing will converge to provide services. Federated learning (FL), as one of the typical distributed computing technologies, needs to be integrated with IoV. For such integration, FL suffers from the straggler effect that the entire learning speed is lowered down, because of the existence of the devices, such as low-powered road side units and vehicles, taking more time to complete their tasks. Although the existing mechanisms reduce straggler effects by adopting asynchronous mechanisms and clustering mechanisms, they lack the detailed analysis of the reasons and the impacts of each cause, leading to inefficiencies in the design of algorithm. Additionally, most of the existing work only considered the impact of a single factor in computation, communication, or data distribution, which lacks comprehensive on research for causes of stragglers effects. The bottleneck is that it is laborious to observe the time delay precisely with the existing high-calculating evaluations. In this article, we elaborately explore the effects of computing power, communication capability, and data distributions on the straggler effects with carefully designing and conducting the extensive experiments. After investigations, we propose a novel learning completion time estimation formula for low computing capability devices with mini-batch stochastic gradient decent (SGD). We compare our proposed estimation formula with the one based on floating operation per second (FLOPs). Through the evaluations, our formula can demonstrate the improvement up to 72.4% at docker and 32.4% at Raspberry Pi device compared to the existing work. © 2014 IEEE.

The network switches in the data plane of Software Defined Networking (SDN) are empowered by an elementary process, in which enormous number of packets which resemble big volumes of data are classified into specific flows by matching them against a set of dynamic rules. This basic process accelerates the processing of data, so that instead of processing singular packets repeatedly, corresponding actions are performed on corresponding flows of packets. In this paper, first, we address limitations on a typical packet classification algorithm like Tuple Space Search (TSS). Then, we present a set of different scenarios to parallelize it on different parallel processing platforms, including graphics Processing Units (GPUs), clusters of Central Processing Units (CPUs), and hybrid clusters. Experimental results show that the hybrid cluster provides the best platform for parallelizing packet classification algorithms, which promises the average throughput rate of 4.2 Million packets per second (Mpps). That is, the hybrid cluster produced by the integration of Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), Message Passing Interface (MPI), and OpenMP programming model could classify 0.24 million packets per second more than the GPU cluster scheme. Such a packet classifier satisfies the required processing speed in the programmable network systems that would be used to communicate big medical data.
