In this paper, we propose a model based on deep learning (DL) frameworks for the detection and classification of diabetic retinopathy (DR), along with the assessment of its severity. DL algorithms have been applied to fundus photographs, which are images of the back of the eye, to automatically detect and classify signs of DR. These algorithms can analyze retinal images and identify anomalies, including microaneurysms, hemorrhages, exudates, as well as fluid accumulation in the macula, all of which serve as indicators of the presence of diabetic retinopathy. We utilized the APTOS 2019 dataset sourced from Kaggle, comprising high-resolution retinal images processed with Gaussian filters for diabetic retinopathy detection. Experiments were conducted on six different models, including Visual Geometry Group 16 (VGG16), Visual Geometry Group 19 (VGG19), Residual Network 50 (ResNet50), Inception Version 3 (InceptionV3), basic Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), and Mobile Network Version 2 (MobileNetV2). The results obtained demonstrate high accuracy, suggesting that this model could contribute to expediting and enhancing the diabetic retinopathy diagnostic process. By automating the detection of anomalies in retinal images, the system proposes an intelligent approach that may help alleviate the workload on medical personnel.

This article presents an in-depth evaluation of electricity consumption predictions using the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model. Leveraging historical electricity consumption data, the SARIMA model demonstrates a commendable ability to forecast future consumption patterns. Our analysis reveals a strong alignment between the model’s predictions and actual consumption data, affirming the efficacy of time series modeling in capturing complex energy consumption dynamics. Notably, while the model excels in predicting near-term consumption trends, uncertainties widen for long-term forecasts, prompting critical reflections on the model’s evolving accuracy and reliability over time. For future research endeavors, we recommend comparing the performance of diverse time series models to discern optimal modeling approaches. Further optimization of model parameters stands as a paramount endeavor to refine prediction accuracy and mitigate uncertainties. Specifically, efforts to identify and address potential overfitting or underfitting tendencies within the model are advised. Additionally, leveraging supplementary data sources and integrating seasonal factors could bolster the reliability of future predictions, expanding the model’s predictive scope and ensuring more robust and precise forecasts.

The growing energy storage market requires safe and stable high-capacity cycling, silicon (Si) anodes are ideal for this purpose. Electrochemical reactions between Si anodes and lithium pose challenges due to the significant volumetric expansion during lithiation. Expansion material can cause cracks in the structure and result in disconnection from the current collector. Si anodes exhibit a variety array of phenomena, such as amorphization and crystallization upon full lithiation, with variations depending on crystal orientations. It is evident that Lithium ions (Li+) diffusion varies across different Si crystalline surfaces and arrangements. It is possible to improve ion mobility and reduce diffusion barriers through strategic design and the use of complementary materials. First principles simulations can provide fundamental insights into atomic interactions, offering a realistic atomistic representation of lithiation processes. Our simulations involve the step-by-step insertion of Li+ into Si orientations and Si with N vacancies. Atomic imaging of Si (110) doped with N vacancies reveals a more favorable behavior in ionic diffusion. Our results explain the ternary Si-Li-N electrode materials and the identification of optimal site disorders to maximize the rate of Li+ diffusion in crystalline Si anodes. © 2024, The Authors. Active learning strategies for 3D object detection in autonomous driving datasets may help to address challenges of data imbalance, redundancy, and high-dimensional data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of entropy querying to select informative samples, aiming to reduce annotation costs and improve model performance. We experiment using the BEVFusion model for 3D object detection on the nuScenes dataset, comparing active learning to random sampling and demonstrating that entropy querying outperforms in most cases. The method is particularly effective in reducing the performance gap between majority and minority classes. Class-specific analysis reveals efficient allocation of annotated resources for limited data budgets, emphasizing the importance of selecting diverse and informative data for model training. Our findings suggest that entropy querying is a promising strategy for selecting data that enhances model learning in resource-constrained environments. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. This manuscript introduces a novel energy-efficient optimization strategy for a zero-energy reconfigurable intelligent reflecting surface (Ze-RIS) supported backscatter communication system employing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The central objective is to maximize the energy efficiency of the system by optimizing the several key parameters, including the amplitude reflection coefficient of Ze-RIS, the reflection coefficients of the backscatter tags, transmit beamforming at the base station, and passive beamforming at the Ze-RIS node, while incorporating a practical non-linear energy harvesting model both for the Ze-RIS and backscatter nodes. The proposed algorithm addresses the complex non-convex problem through three stages. Firstly, the transmit beamforming vectors are determined by leveraging the semi-definite programming and successive-convex approximation, while handling the rank-1 constraint with the semi-definite relaxation. Secondly, we determine the amplitude reflection coefficient of Ze-RIS by leveraging the monotonicity property of the objective function. Simultaneously, we compute the reflection coefficients of backscatter tags using the Dinkelbach algorithm, Lagrange duality, and the sub-gradient method. Thirdly, we compute passive beamforming using successive-convex approximation and semi-definite programming techniques, achieving a rank-1 solution through the penalty-based method. Finally, the numerical simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach, demonstrating its superiority over the benchmark competitors with rapid convergence within a few iterations. © 1972-2012 IEEE. Low temperature fuel cells (LTFCs) present promising technical solutions for enabling broad applications of green Hydrogen energy. However, the efficiencies and durability of LTFCs are limited by the dynamic water evolution and transport, especially when they are operated at high current densities. Developing water monitoring techniques therefore presents a crucial strategy for optimizing the designs and operating schemes of LTFCs, and eventually overcoming such water management issues. This work explores the possibilities of using ultrasonic techniques to investigate the water contents in the gas diffusion layers (GDL), as one of the key components of the membrane electrode assembly in LTFCs. For this purpose, we numerically and experimentally investigated the propagation of longitudinal mode ultrasonic waves in GDLs at different water saturation levels. The numerical simulations and experimental investigations both reveal the changes in the speed of sound and acoustic attenuation coefficient with respect to the water saturation level of the GDL. These physical effects open new horizons for developing simplified and cost-effective ultrasound based water monitoring systems towards applications in operating LTFCs.

Low-Complexity Iterative Precoding Design for Near-field Multiuser Systems With Spatial Non-Stationarity

Extremely large antenna arrays (ELAA) are regarded as a promising technology for supporting sixth-generation (6G) networks. However, the large number of antennas significantly increases the computational complexity in precoding design, even for linearly regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. To address this issue, a series of low-complexity iterative precoding are investigated. The main idea of these methods is to avoid matrix inversion of RZF precoding. Specifically, RZF precoding is equivalent to a system of linear equations that can be solved by fast iterative algorithms, such as random Kaczmarz (RK) algorithm. Yet, the performance of RK-based precoding algorithm is limited by the energy distributions of multiple users, which restricts its application in ELAA-assisted systems. To accelerate the RK-based precoding, we introduce the greedy random Kaczmarz (GRK)-based precoding by using the greedy criterion-based selection strategy. To further reduce the complexity of the GRK-based precoding, we propose a visibility region (VR)-based orthogonal GRK (VR-OGRK) precoding that leverages near-field spatial non-stationarity, which is characterized by the concept of VR. Next, by utilizing the information from multiple hyperplanes in each iteration, we extend the GRK-based precoding to the aggregation hyperplane Kaczmarz (AHK)-based pecoding algorithm, which further enhances the convergence rate. Building upon the AHK algorithm, we propose a VR-based orthogonal AHK (VR-OAHK) precoding to further reduce the computational complexity. Furthermore, the proposed iterative precoding algorithms are proven to converge to RZF globally at an exponential rate. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms achieve faster convergence and lower computational complexity than benchmark algorithms, and yield very similar performance to the RZF precoding. This research explores a new finite element model for the free vibration analysis of bi-directional functionally graded (BDFG) beams. The model is based on an efficient higher-order shear deformation beam theory that incorporates a trigonometric warping function for both transverse shear deformation and stress to guarantee traction-free boundary conditions without the necessity of shear correction factors. The proposed two-node beam element has three degrees of freedom per node, and the inter-element continuity is retained using both C1 and C0 continuities for kinematics variables. In addition, the mechanical properties of the (BDFG) beam vary gradually and smoothly in both the in-plane and out-of-plane beam’s directions according to an exponential power-law distribution. The highly elevated performance of the developed model is shown by comparing it to conceptual frameworks and solution procedures. Detailed numerical investigations are also conducted to examine the impact of boundary conditions, the bi-directional gradient indices, and the slenderness ratio on the free vibration response of BDFG beams. The suggested finite element beam model is an excellent potential tool for the design and the mechanical behavior estimation of BDFG structures. © 2024 Techno-Press, Ltd.

In this paper, the correctness of the algebraic determination of the coordinate of the third focus of the Cartesian oval is examined and analysed. This analysis is necessary because the process includes solving systems with a large number of multivariate polynomial equations using the computer algebra system Maple. The paper also considers the difficulties and limitations of using computers in determining the coordinate of the third focus.
