This paper describes the design and fabrication of an intelligent Irrigation control system that allows intelligent control of the water applied to the field at right amounts and times. The system should have the capabilities to measure the water content in the soil so water can be applied as needed. The WATERMARK soil moisture sensor based on the measurement of the soil tension will provide the measurement of the water content. The system measures the soil tension, soil temperature and rain status and records the data in a file for future reference. It will apply water to field if a certain level of soil water tension is reached. This intelligent Irrigation control system is suitable for universities, research centers and farms where a control of the soil water content is required. The system can be used to study the water requirements for crops so irrigation can be scheduled efficiently.

A new technique for parallel imprinting of multiple optical-fibre facets is presented. Resolution of better than 15nm is demonstrated and up to 40 optical-fibres have been imprinted in parallel. A hand version of the computer manikin, called "digital hand", is considered as an effective assessment tool for hand-operated products at the design stage. In order to construct various sizes and proportions of hands in a computer, it is required to develop the system that can measure the accurate dimensions of hands automatically. In this paper, an image-based measurement system of hand dimensions has been proposed. The system utilizes an image scanner for acquiring a hand image in 2D. First, the joint positions of fingers are estimated by extracting the edges of the wrinkles on a palm and fingers in this image. For this process, anatomical constraint is effectively considered. Then, the 2D dimensions of a hand are automatically calculated. In addition, based on the fact that the dimensions of a hand are highly correlated each other, the system estimates the 3D measures of a hand, such as the thickness and circumference of fingers and a palm by regression analysis. The accuracy and reproducibility was validated using the proposed system by comparison with actual results measured by traditional method. The results prove our system has enough capability for actual hand measurement and its applications. © 2010 The institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

In this paper, we propose a social-based privacy-preserving packet forwarding protocol, called SPRING, for vehicular delay tolerant networks (DTNs). With SPRING, Roadside Units (RSUs) deployed along the roadside can assist in packet forwarding to achieve highly reliable transmissions. In specific, we first heuristically define how to evaluate each traffic intersection's social degree in a vehicular DTN. Based on the social degree information, we then strategically place RSUs at some high-social intersections. As a result, these RSUs can provide tremendous assistance in temporarily storing packets and helping packet forwarding to achieve high delivery ratio. Performance evaluations via extensive simulations demonstrate the SPRING's efficiency. In addition, detailed security analyses show that the proposed SPRING can achieve conditional privacy preservation and resist most attacks existing in vehicular DTNs. ©2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we develop a combined adaptive-sliding mode control scheme with smooth control actions for a class of nonlinear dynamic systems with actuator failure which is robust with respect to actuator failures, to a nonlinear perturbation, and to an external disturbance with unknown bounds. An appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii type functional is introduced to design the adaptation algorithms, and to prove stability. The simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed adaptive-sliding mode techniques. © 2010 IEEE.

Writer identification recently has been considerably studied due to its various applications in forensic and commercial sections. Because offline, text-independent writer identification has limited requirements in writing sample collection, it has wider applications and meanwhile more difficult to handle. By considering handwriting images as visually distinctive textures, we propose a new method for offline, text-independent writer identification based on multiscale version of Gaussian Markov Random Fields (G MRF) model. The handwriting features are extracted in wavelet domain of handwriting textures in which global texture feature (such as directional information) from handwriting can be detected. In addition, GMRF is investigated to capture different local spatial structures of graphemes (character-shape) written by different people. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms both 2-D Gabor model and wavelet-based GGD method. ©2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we describe about the development of electric circuit exercise system that has interactiveness and effect of animation by using GUI operation, to make "Movement" of technological model easily underdtood for the students. Estimation of parameters of mathematical model of an electromachine excitation system is presented, carried out by selected optimisation algorithms. The estimation is based on real and simulated measurement of waveforms obtained during test disturbances of the steady-state operation of the generating unit. Measurements of dynamic waveforms during step changes in the reference voltage of the voltage regulator of the generator operating in no-load state at the voltage controller operation (automatic control) were taken and recorded in Power Plant Rybnik. The problem of determining the considered model parameters is formulated in the form of the objective function, which was minimised using genetic, gradient and hybrid algorithms. MATLAB-Simulink package was used for computations. © 2010 institute of Thermomechanics AS CR.

In this paper, some modeling aspects with respect to bone ingrowth, fracture healing and intra-osseous wound healing are *** consider a finite element method for a model of bone ingrowth into a prosthesis. Such a model can be used as a tool for a surgeon to investigate the bone ingrowth kinetics when positioning a prosthesis. The overall model consists of two coupled models: the biological part that consists of non-linear diffusion-reaction equations for the various cell densities and themechanical part that contains the equations for poro-elasticity. The two models are coupled and in this paper the model is presented with some preliminary academic results. The model is used to carry out a parameter sensitivity analysis of ingrowth kinetics with respect to the parameters involved. Further, we consider a Finite Element model due to Bailon-Plaza and Van der Meulen for fracture healing in bone. This model is based on a set of coupled convection-diffusion- reaction equations and mechanical issues have not been incorporated. A parameter sensitivity analysis has been carried out. Finally, we consider a simplified model due to Adam to simulate intra-osseous wound healing. This model treats the wound edge as a moving boundary. To solve the moving boundary problem, the level set method is used. For the mesh points in the vicinity of the wound edge, a local adaptive mesh refinement is applied. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
