The correct assessment of bone fracture risk is a mandatory issue for the application of efficient therapeutic scheme. However, it is still not clear which parameter can better predict the probability of a broken event. The correct identification of the fracture zone is a prerequisite in order to recognize the best parameter describing the bone failure. The in-vitro analysis of trabecular bone by means of micro tomographic devices (micro-CT) is a common technique for the study of bone structure. In this scenario image guide failure analysis is becoming a powerful tool for the characterization of trabecular bone mechanical behavior. In the present study the application of image registration techniques is proposed for the rapid and precise identification of the broken fracture. Five trabecular bone specimens were acquired by means of a micro-CT before and after the mechanical compression. The two datasets of every specimen were registered using a surface based automatic method and the broken region was identified as the only region not registered. The automatic procedure was finally validated comparing its results to the visual identification of three operators independently. The procedure resulted in complete agreement in 7 cases out of 10. For the three remaining cases, the operators had to compare their findings against the ones suggested by the automatic registration procedure. In all three cases, the operators had to correct their findings suggesting that the proposed automatic registration procedure was successfully performed and the identification of the fracture zone was correct. In conclusion, a novel procedure for the identification of trabecular bone fracture zone was presented and validated throughout this study. © 2010 International Federation for Medical and Biological engineering.

The growing problem of spectrum scarcity and the inefficient spectrum utilization in the licensed bands, are addressed by the emerging Cognitive Radio (CR) paradigm. It is seen that the choice of the spectrum bands, called as spectrum decision, must be organized carefully by considering the challenges in the spectrum availability over time, the short term fluctuations in the availability, and the heterogeneous Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the cognitive radio users. Taking into account these challenges, the main contribution of this paper is to design a QoS-aware spectrum decision framework that achieves higher throughput and fairness in CR networks. The available spectrum fluctuations are characterized by using queueing theoretic models and are parametrized by a novel QoS parameter called opportunity index, Ψ. The heterogeneous QoS requirements of CR users are classified by defining another novel QoS parameter called request index, κ. An admission control algorithm is designed to stabilize the heterogeneous QoS requirements according to Ψ and κ. A spectrum decision algorithm is developed to select most appropriate spectrum bands considering the stabilized QoS requirements and the characterized spectrum. Moreover, by using a novel spectrum mobility algorithm the available spectrum is continuously monitored for dynamic variations in the CR network. The simulations demonstrate that our QoS-aware spectrum characterization and decision framework maximizes the total throughput while maintaining the fairness.

A low-power, low-noise, front-end neural signal amplifier is designed for all-diamond neural recording probes. The neural amplifier provides a gain of 39.6 dB with a high cutoff frequency of 9.8 kHz. It effectively removes DC, with a real-time tunable low cutoff frequency between 10 Hz and 100 Hz. The consumed power is 51 μW with an input referred noise of 7.78 μV rms between 10 Hz and 10 kHz. The amplifier is designed in austriamicrosystems 0.35 μm double-poly, 4-metal, n-well CMOS process and consumes an area of 0.012 mm 2 using 3.3 V power supplies.

We study the problem of optimal power allocation (PA) among relays for lifetime maximization in a dual-hop cooperative network operated by amplify-and-forward relays with battery limitation. We first formulate the optimization problem for power allocation in a static channel case and present a closed-form solution with the objective of lifetime maximization. This solution simply requires equally distributing energy over time for each participating relay. Based on this, we then develop a perceived lifetime (PLT) PA strategy that can be used in time-varying channel scenarios. We also present a minimum weighted total power (MWTP) strategy that depends only on the current channel condition and residual energy information. PLT and MWTP are compared through analysis and simulations. It is demonstrated that both result in significant lifetime improvement compared to the conventional strategy of minimizing the total power per transmission, especially when the link conditions or initial energy levels are nonuniform among relays.

We study the effect of relay cluster selection on throughout in multi-hop cooperative communications with one source and one destination. We evaluate the effective relay throughput as a function of the source transmission rate and the network outage probability. Assuming channel side information (CSI) only available at the receivers, we formulate the cluster size optimization to maximize throughput. Furthermore, since the bottleneck of the multi-hop relaying is at the first hop where there is in general a lack of cooperation from the source, for the scenario where CSI is available at the source, we may incorporate opportunistic relay selection at the first hop in the cluster optimization problem. Our results demonstrate how the optimal selection of cluster sizes can significantly increase the relaying throughput.

A hybrid cascaded multilevel inverter application for renewable energy resources including a reconfiguration technique is developed. The objective of this research is to propose an alternative topology of hybrid cascaded multilevel inverter applied to a low voltage dc microgrid in telecommunication buildings. The modified PWM technique is also developed to reduce switching losses. Also, the proposed topology can reduce the number of required power switches compared to a traditional cascaded multilevel inverter. A possible reconfiguration technique after faulty condition is also discussed. PSIM (PowerSim) and Simulink/MATLAB are used to simulate the circuit operation and control signal. A 3-kW prototype is developed. The switching losses of the proposed multilevel inverter are also investigated. By using the modified PWM technique and reconfiguration method, the proposed hybrid inverter can improve system efficiency and reliability. The proposed inverter efficiency is 97% under tested condition. The results show that proposed hybrid inverter topology is a promising method for a low voltage dc microgrid interfacing with renewable energy resources.

Fuzzy inference systems are of great interest to provide a consistent mathematical framework for the representation of imprecision in relation to objects, relationships, knowledge and aims, and are viewed as powerful tools for reasoning and decision-making. In this paper, we survey several fuzzy approaches in magnetic resonances image processing, with an aim to develop and validate multidimensional segmentation and filtering methodology for future research. We also briefly review a number of advances of fuzzy set theory in the MR image processing application domain.

This paper presents different fuzzy membership functions for maximizing the GenCo's profit in competitive electricity markets. Rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal fuzzy membership functions are assigned for market prices and probability that reserves are called and generated. The proposed fuzzy membership functions produce an optimal profit fuzzy function that reflects the market uncertainties and helps in decision making. Transmission congestion is incorporated through locational marginal prices in the proposed formulation. IEEE 118-bus system is used to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach.

A 77 GHz low noise amplifier has been designed using common source topology implemented in low cost CMOS technology for various applications. A new method has been proposed for the design of the amplifier. In this method, input/output matching networks and transistor gate widths have been optimized for maximum gain and minimum noise figure. The design is flexible such that the LNA can operate in both high gain/high power and low gain/low power modes with low noise figure of less than 7 dB at 77 GHz. Amplifier gain is better than 18 dB consuming 60 mW of dc power and it is better than 14.5 dB consuming 30 mW of dc power. The input and output return losses are better than 10 dB in the frequency range of 72 to 82 GHz.

The basic picture and framework of the transnational interregional Input-Output (I-O) table cross countries is introduced, and conventional impact analyses will be conducted to capture cross-border transactions and inter-linkages, from one region to another region, and vice versa. Also, the relationship between regional linkages and the import/export trades will be investigated. The I-O tablesreceived were used to consider different scenarios of the regional development such as the well-balanced scenario, the inertia scenario, and the scenario of economic development followed by loading of idle capacities. The I-O analysis applied to estimate business ecological situation in a region varying the total output or final demand indices. Instantly, the evaluation of the total investments required for nature protection activity is possible as well. This study also has analyzed FDI strategies via a scenario of increasing consumption up to normative standards among population. The simulations were made to estimate multiplicative effects caused by upsizing industries in the regional economy. Furthermore, from a macroeconomic perspective, structural changes may alter the relationship between the construction sector and other sectors. With this view, it is possible to explore the capability of I-O tables in tracking inter-sectoral relationships and explaining changes in such relationships with respect to structural changes. Lessons are expected to be learned from comparing the patterns of change of one sector of an economy against other sectors. ©2010 IEEE.
