Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) is based on a collective method of various techniques for retrieving images through the appropriate features, such as color, texture and shape. Despite of selecting an effective collection of features for each image, it is significant to use appropriate and relevant criterion to measure the similarity between a query image and all the available images in the dataset. In this paper we are introducing a new and effective similarity measurement criterion. In other words, in order to retrieve the images in an impressive way, an artificial immune system (AIS) clustering algorithm, called Tecno_Streams, is proposed for content-based image retrieval. According to experimental results the proposed image retrieval immune-based system is more applicable and effective than the other methods such as histogram based criterion.

When a student has some questions on a class subject, he should ask questions in his class. However, the student, who cannot ask the question in the class, has to go to the teacher to ask questions after hours. In such a case, it is the problem that profitable information discussed between the teacher and the student by questioning will not spread over all students. Therefore, we have designed and implemented the system which provides smooth communication and sharing information after hours. In this paper, we describes the further improvement on enriched expressions and the usability on Web. © 2010 The institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

Bipolar junction transistors with a non isolated substrate have extra effects that need to be included in compact models. These effects are due to the existence of a parasitic pnp transistor inside the main transistor having the substrate as its collector. The parasitic can be modeled as a complete transistor, however that would add too much complexity to the whole model. This work focuses on one aspect of the parasitic pnp: the reverse biasing of the collector-substrate junction. This reverse biasing induces currents that are very low (≈ pA) at lower temperatures yet are significant (≈ μA) when the device is heated up to 150°C. With recent interest in new technologies requiring accurate functioning at higher temperatures, the reverse current of the collector substrate junction ceases to be negligible and has to be taken into account. This work studies that effect, and models it in a sufficient way.

In this work, Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate the Debye dielectric behavior of mixed normal- and relaxor-ferroelectrics. The results show that, with increasing temperature, the dielectric permittivity of the mixed system sharply increases at low temperatures but slowly decays at high temperatures, while still presenting the dielectric peaks close to the relaxor- and normal-ferroelectrics transition temperatures. Further, it is found that the sharpness, the magnitude, and the frequency dispersion of the dielectric peaks can be finely tuned by adjusting relevant normal-ferroelectric parameters in the model. However, the modified Curie-Weiss law shows that its exponent γ is governed by the inverse-temperature dependence as the exponent is very close to 2 regardless of normal-ferroelectric content. The functionalities of the Debye-type dielectric permittivity are then discussed along with the comparison with experiments. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

In this paper, time-delay effect on continuous approximation of sliding mode control (SMC) systems is studied in depth. The switching band that bound the zigzagging behaviors due to control switching around the switching manifold is constructed. Robust control theory is employed to develop a sufficient condition for the asymptotical stability of the system. Simulation is conducted to verify the theoretical results.

This paper reports application results of Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) for a practical problem. In this paper, a reentrant scheduling problem is considered as a practical problem which has been addressed by our previous works. MCTS introduced by Coulom is a best-first search where the pseudorandom simulations guide the solution of problem. Recent improvements on MCTS have produced strong computer Go program, which has a large search space, and the success is a hot topic for selecting the best move. So far, most of reports about MCTS have been on two-player game, and MCTS has been applied rarely in one-player perfect-information games. MCTS does not need an admissible heuristic, so the application of MCTS for one-player games might be an interesting alternative. Additionally, one-player games like puzzles are determinately operated only by one player's decision, so sequences of changes in state are describable as a network diagram of interdependence of operations. Therefore if MCTS for one-player games is considered as a meta-heuristic algorithm, we can use this algorithm for not only many practical problems, but also combinatorial optimization problems. Especially as MCTS does not fully depend on evaluation function, so the solutions based on MCTS remain effective if objective function of problem is modified. This paper firstly investigated on the application of Single Player MCTS (SP-MCTS) introduced by Schadd et al. Next this paper showed the effectiveness of new simulation strategies on SP-MCTS by numerical experiments. Based on the results, this paper discussed the application potentiality of SP-MCTS for a practical reentrant scheduling problem.

In many real world data applications, objects may have missing attributes. Conventional techniques used to classify this kind of data are represented in a feature space. However, usually they need imputation methods and/or changing the classifiers. In this paper, we propose two classification alternatives based on dissimilarities. These techniques promise to be appealing for solving the problem of classification of data with missing attributes. Results obtained with the two approaches outperform the results of the techniques based in the feature space. Besides, the proposed approaches have the advantage that they hardly require additional computations like imputations or classifier updating. © 2010 IEEE.

Creativity, innovation and leadership are among the essential attributes of future engineers as identified in the Engineer 2020 report by the National Academy of engineering. It is critical for students to have the ability to identify new needs and opportunities for technological innovation in highly complex and interdisciplinary domains. Historically, entrepreneurship has fueled innovation and the advent of many technological advances. Therefore, education in entrepreneurship for engineering or computing disciplines that complement strong analytical and technical skills, is likely to significantly enhance students' lifelong ability and desire to innovate. The goal of this panel is to discuss a number of education models in entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership at different types of computing and engineering schools across the country and internationally, in order to identify common themes and effective components for such programs.

We show with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy that a new energy band appears in the electronic structure of electron-doped hydrogenated monolayer graphene (H-graphene). Its occupation can be controlled with the hydrogen amount and allows for tuning of graphene’s doping level. Our calculations of the electronic structure of H-graphene suggest that this state is largely composed of hydrogen 1s orbitals and remains extended for low H coverages despite the random chemisorption of H. Further evidence for the existence of a hydrogen state is provided by x-ray absorption studies of undoped H-graphene which are clearly showing the emergence of an additional state in the vicinity of the π* resonance.
