In this paper we discusses some pros and cons of using AJAX for increasing the usability of Web applications. As AJAX allows Web applications look like desktop applications, it can increase the learnability of a Web application. Nevertheless, AJAX can also be the source of end user frustration if the XMLHttpRequest is not supported by the browser, Javascript is not available, or an Internet connection is missing. We also provide some workarounds for server response time gaps, for example by providing visible user feedback messages) and enabling the back button to work properly.

Wiener filters applied to channel-summed RF echo data was approximated to the ideal Bayesian beamforming strategy for imaging breast lesion features. They can be computed in real-time and perform well provided the system response matrix is circulant. Real systems exhibit depth-varying impulse responses, so performance degrades for some essential diagnostic features. This paper describes the effects of circulant assumption (CA) violations on the robustness of human visual discrimination efficiency, and the effects of regularization, as applied to beamformers for breast sonography. The Wiener filter is then adapted for shift-varying system responses. The trade off between performance and computation time for each approach is studied using simulations and phantoms scanned with a commercial system.

In this study, we present a new idea dealing with the analysis of fuzzy random variables (FRVs) being treated as samples of data. The proposed concept can be used to model various real-life situations where uncertainty is not only present in the form of randomness but also comes in the form of imprecision described in terms of fuzzy sets. We propose a hybrid approach, which combines a convex hull approach (called Beneath-Beyond algorithm) with a fuzzy random regression analysis. Falling under the umbrella of intelligent data analysis (IDA) tool, this approach is suitable for real-time implementation of data analysis. For a fuzzy random data set, we include simulation results and highlight two main advantages, namely a decrease of required analysis time and a reduction of computational complexity. This emphasizes that the proposed IDA approach becomes an efficient way for real-time data analysis. © 2010 IEEE.

The basic picture and framework of the transnational interregional Input-Output (I-O) table cross countries is introduced, and conventional impact analyses will be conducted to capture cross-border transactions and inter-linkages, from one region to another region, and vice versa. Also, the relationship between regional linkages and the import/export trades will be investigated. The I-O tables-received were used to consider different scenarios of the regional development such as the well-balanced scenario, the inertia scenario, and the scenario of economic development followed by loading of idle capacities. The I-O analysis applied to estimate business ecological situation in a region varying the total output or final demand indices. Instantly, the evaluation of the total investments required for nature protection activity is possible as well. This study also has analyzed FDI strategies via a scenario of increasing consumption up to normative standards among population. The simulations were made to estimate multiplicative effects caused by upsizing industries in the regional economy. Furthermore, from a macroeconomic perspective, structural changes may alter the relationship between the construction sector and other sectors. With this view, it is possible to explore the capability of I-O tables in tracking inter-sectoral relationships and explaining changes in such relationships with respect to structural changes. Lessons are expected to be learned from comparing the patterns of change of one sector of an economy against other sectors.

Nervous system conveys information by electrical signals called `spikes', therefore, spikes detection and sorting are challenging topics in the neural data processing. The principal component analysis (PCA) is a convenient tool for clustering spikes; however it has some disadvantages for closely shaped and overlapped spikes. For such the cases, an algorithm based on the combination of the principal component analysis and undecimated wavelet transform, is proposed to enhance the cluster formation from the spikes mapping. These results indicate that the principal component analysis used in combination with the undecimated wavelet has a better performance in the spike sorting. This can lead to more compact and separate clusters in comparison with the PCA clustering and more efficient spike sorting.

We use 40 laser excitation energies to analyze the differences in the Raman spectra from chemical vapor deposition-derived double-wall carbon nanotube (CVD-DWNT) bundles, fullerene-derived DWNT bundles (C60-DWNTs), and individual fullerene-derived DWNTs with inner type-I and type-II semiconducting tubes paired with outer metallic tubes. For the radial breathing mode (RBM) of SWNTs, an experimental ωRBM vs dt relationship of the form ωRBM=A/dt+B is obtained for the inner tubes of DWNT bundles where the A and B constants are found to be close to those obtained by elasticity theory when modeling the elastic properties of graphite. A similar change in ωRBM is observed for an inner type-II semiconducting (6,5) tube and a type-I (9,1) tube when inside various metallic outer tubes. The G-band frequency is observed to upshift when switching the laser resonance from DWNTs with semiconducting inner tubes to DWNTs with metallic inner tubes. Finally, we measure the G′ feature from C60-DWNTs and note a downshift in frequency with respect to that of CVD-DWNTs.

A number of ultrasound methods are available for medical imaging. Fundamental imaging uses the echoes from the same spectral band as the transmitted pulse. Tissue harmonic imaging (THI) utilizes frequencies at multiple(s) of the fundamental and effectively suppresses reverberations, and off-axis and near-field artifacts. Two types of THI comprise secondand superharmonic imaging (SHI). The former uses the second harmonic of the echoes and the latter combines the third to fifth harmonics. Clinical research showed that the optimal transmit frequency for fundamental and second harmonic cardiac imaging is 3.5 and 1.8 MHz respectively. As the level of the harmonics is determined by a balance of nonlinear propagation and attenuation, the optimal frequency for SHI is expected to be lower. The first goal of this study was to investigate the optimal transmit frequency for SHI by simulating the entire imaging chain based on an adapted SONAR equation. Two simulation cases are examined: the first uses cardiac tissue properties and the second is based on a mix of 50% cardiac tissue and 50% blood. Using the SONAR equation the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the second to fifth harmonics was computed up to 15 cm for 1 2.5 MHz transmit frequencies. The transducer's transmit and receive transfer was modeled, as well as its noise. The adaptation included nonlinear forward propagation calculated with axisymmetric KZK, the backpropagation was linear. The highest frequency yielding a 30 dB dynamic range at the required imaging depth was assumed optimal. The second goal of this study was to compare the beams produced by optimal fundamental, second and SHI for cardiac applications. To this end we used a 3D KZK implementation for rectangular apertures. The optimal transmit frequency for SHI was 1.0 1.2 MHz at 13 cm using cardiac tissue properties, this increased to 1.7 MHz if the properties of the cardiac tissue/blood mix were used. This paper describes a novel operationality improvement control for electric power assisted wheelchairs. "Electric power assisted wheelchair" which assists the driving force by electric motors is expected to be widely used as a mobility support system for elderly people and disabled people, however, the performance of the straight and circular road driving must be further improved because the two wheels drive independently. This paper proposes a novel operationality improvement control by fuzzy algorithm to realize the stable driving on straight and circular roads. The suitable assisted torque of the right and left wheels is determined, by fuzzy algorithm based on the posture angular velocity, the posture angle of the wheelchair, the human input torque proportion and the total human torque of the right and left wheels. Some experiments on the practical roads show the effectiveness of the proposed control system. © 2009 The institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.
