We consider a tuning problem for a class of feedforward controllers for a given closed-loop system with an unknown plant by only using of the input and output measurements. The feedforward controllers which should be tuned are implemented as a unity feedback system of a conventional PID controller. Hence, the feedforward controller is just tuned by the PID parameters which is implemented in the controller. In this paper, we propose a direct method to obtain a suitable PID parameter to produce a desired response based on a data matching approach.

The electric power is indispensable and its stable supply is always expected. A stable supply needs the real-time observation of load conditions by measurement of power factor. In addition, the various faults have been caused from the harmonic voltage and current. In the authors' laboratory, the sensor, which simultaneously measures both the waveforms of the voltage and current without contacting the conductors in the three-phase power distribution system directly, has been designed and implemented. Using the sensor, we will observe the power factor and harmonics from the measured waveforms of voltage and current in power distribution line. However, the experimental sensor was designed to be applied to the 6.6 kV power distribution system in the dielectric strength. The authors will propose the sensor for the 22 kV power distribution system and investigate the output characteristics of this new sensor from numerical results based on the finite element method.

This video shows the results of the project on the mechatronic development of the Twente humanoid head. The mechanical structure consists of a neck with four degrees of freedom (DOFs) and two eyes (a stereo pair system) which tilt on a common axis and rotate sideways freely providing a three more DOFs. The motion control algorithm is designed to receive, as an input, the output of a biological-inspired vision processing algorithm and to exploit the redundancy of the joints for the realization of the movements. In this paper, we consider a reduction problem of vibration in riding and rider's burden by stabilizing the bicycle at slow speed. In riding a bicycle, the reference input which is generally required by feedback methods is implicitly determined by a rider. Hence, the preassigned reference input may be biased against the rider's intention. To compensate the bias, we adopt robust washout control which can asymptotically reject the influence of the bias and is robust against the speed fluctuation of the bicycle. Furthermore, by introducing a scaling in designing robust washout control, we improve the resulting control performance.

Conventional reliability analysis rely on the probability model, which is often inappropriate for handling complex systems due to the lack of sufficient probabilistic information. For large complex systems made up of many components, the uncertainty of each individual parameter amplifies the uncertainty of the total system reliability. To overcome this problem, the concept of fuzzy approach has been used in the evaluation of the reliability of a system. In this paper, we use a gracefully degradable redundant computing system to capture the effect of coverage factor and repair on its reliability. Markov models on the other hand can handle degradation, imperfect fault coverage, complex repair policies, multi-operational-state components, dependent failures, and other sequence dependent events. In order to have the advantages of both fuzzy and Markov approaches, an attempt has been made to develop a fuzzy based Markov model.

This paper analyses the impact of unified power flow controller (UPFC) on performance of distance relaying scheme and proposes a new adaptive relaying technique for mitigating the undesirable effects of overreach/underreach shown by the conventional distance relays. The proposed scheme computes on-line control parameters of the UPFC based on synchronized phasor measurements from Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) installed at line terminals. Trip boundaries are generated for the distance relay considering the effects of control parameters of UPFC, fault resistance and system loading condition. Moreover, for deciding the trip boundaries for a given Single Line to Ground (SLG) fault, the information on self protection mode of UPFC (bypass mode), has also been utilized. A generalized regression neural network has been used to identify the trip boundaries of the distance relay. The simulation results show the ability of the generalized regression neural network to identify the trip boundaries inspite of dynamic changes in the control parameters of the UPFC.
