Micro-grid power systems that utilize renewable energy sources, such as solar PV and wind turbines, are a viable solution for providing electricity to remote areas that are not connected to national grids. By combining various renewable energy sources and utilizing battery storage and backup diesel generators, these hybrid systems can provide reliable off-grid power. This paper focused on optimal sizing and feasibility study of a micro-grid system consisting of solar PV, wind turbines, battery banks, diesel generator, and a converter for the rural area of Gashamo village, located in the eastern part of Jarar Zone in the Somali Region of Ethiopia. The hybrid system was designed based on the primary load demand of the village, which was 2895 kWh/day, with a peak load of 176 kW, deferrable energy of 225 kWh/day, and a deferrable peak load of 37 kW, with a COE of $0.162/kWh. The HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable) software tool was utilized to simulate and optimize the off-grid system and energy management system. Solar PV and wind energy were considered as primary sources to supply electricity directly to the load and to charge the battery bank when excess energy generation was available, with the diesel generator serving as a backup. During the design of the power system setup, simulation and optimization were conducted based on load demand, climatic data, economics of integrated system components, and other parameters, with the aim of minimizing the total NPC and levelized COE to select an economically feasible and technically capable hybrid power system. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This paper presents a design and simulation of a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to improve the reliability of a distribution feeder in bahir dar, Ethiopia. The SCADA system was modeled using MATLAB Simulink and Java programming language, and it includes sensors, circuit breakers, and a human-machine interface (HMI) for remote monitoring and control of the distribution feeder. The results of the simulation show that the proposed SCADA system has significantly improved the reliability of the distribution feeder, with a 60% reduction in the system average interruption duration index (SAIDI), a 61% reduction in the customer average interruption duration index (CAIDI), and a 1.11% improvement in the average service availability index (ASAI). © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Among the most prominent sources of alternative power in recent years is solar energy. Thus, photovoltaic (PV) systems need to be made more efficient and reliable. A PV panel’s conversion capacity is between 23% and 24% when it converts solar energy to electricity. However, the average conversion efficiency for most PV panels was around 15–20%. Identifying the maximum power point (MPP) on PV panels is one way to increase conversion efficiency. MPPT system control is presented and discussed in this paper for a 100 MW system in Metehara, Ethiopia. The aim of this paper is to present a novel hybrid approach for maximum power point tracking (MPPT). A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and a P&O MPPT technique are combined in this method. In order to achieve the MPP with improved speed and accuracy, the algorithm goes through a series of stages. MATLAB/Simulink was used to model the proposed algorithm under different operating conditions. Through comprehensive simulations across diverse input conditions, the proposed approach’s MPP tracking performance is assessed. When compared with systems lacking MPPT techniques, the hybrid approach demonstrates an average efficiency of 99.76%. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Articulated robot manipulators are commonly used in industrial settings due to their ability to execute complex movements and handle heavy loads. To ensure successful task completion, it is crucial to have precise trajectory tracking control for these manipulators. However, the manipulator’s dynamics are highly complex and nonlinear. Additionally, the manipulator’s performance is significantly affected by unknown disturbances. To overcome these, a neural network controller (NNC) is utilized to achieve the desired trajectory. The NNC possesses the ability to learn and adapt to complex and nonlinear systems. To train the NN, data from a PID controller is collected under two conditions: normal condition and with external torque disturbance. The NN is trained using the nntool Matlab toolbox. The proposed NNC’s robustness is analyzed by introducing an external torque disturbance. The controller’s performance is evaluated using metrics root mean square error (RMSE) and integral absolute error (IAE). One of the key components of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks is tunable optical filters (TOFs). This paper focused on the theoretical analysis and design of a new dual-channel micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) actuated tunable optical filter based on polarization insensitive compound ring resonators (PICRRs) for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical networking applications. It is basically structured on an optimally designed capacitive type microcantilever beam, which is fixed at both ends, with built-in PICRRs, which are placed at both fixed ends of the beam to gain linearly varying longitudinal strain and stress on the resonators. Also, the dimensions of the rings are properly chosen to achieve a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 0.4078 nm with a flat pass band at 1 dB of 0.3626 nm and a good shape factor for both channels. It also shows a free spectral range of about 20.05 nm for the first channel and 20.046 nm for the second channel, with a high extinction ratio that allows filtering of adjacent channels of 50 GHz DWDM systems. Thus, when the electrostatic attraction force (EAF) is applied, the beam will bend, which induces strain and stress in the rings, which brings a change in effective refractive index of the rings and also affects the perimeter and coupling coefficients of the rings that leads to a change in the output spectrum shift, providing the tunability as high as 4.779 nm/μN, and it is capable of tuning up to 355 GHz with negligible variations of FWHM and channel spacing within the tunability range of the two channels. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In various regions of the world, the 5G network has been operational since 2020. In 5G better spectrum and power resources are included as extra features. A better network is still required, nevertheless, to support the Internet of Everything and the needs of the holographic society. Consequently, it is anticipated that the 6G network will debut in 2030 to meet future demand. The new 6G technologies will improve the air interface and transmission technologies. Enhanced channel coding is one of these new technologies. For 5G, the 3GPP chose the channel coding techniques to be LDPC and Polar codes. By enhancing the 5G polar codes performance it can be applied as channel coding techniques in 6G. Using higher-order modulation techniques with these polar codes is one approach. We have used polar codes with 16APSK and QAM with low code rates to improve the performance of 5G polar codes. The result showed better BER performance for polar codes with 16APSK and QAM at a low coding rate than BPSK modulation with a high code rate. © 2023 IEEE.

In this research, nature inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithms: Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Techniques are formulated to tune optimal combinations of PID controller parameters for a quadruple tank level control application. The degree of relation of the best paring for both interacted control loops are justified by using Relative Gain Array (RGA) calculation. The overall system has been modeled and implemented in MATLAB/Simulink and performance evaluations has been done for time domain performance specifications of settling time, rise time, percentage overshoot and steady state error as comparison criterions of controllers. Accordingly, for the minimum phase case, GA tuned PID has settling time of 0.36sec and 0.31second for the tank 1 and tank 2 respectively. And PSO tuned PID controller has settling time of 0.96sec and 0.35sec for tank 1and tank 2 respectively. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of results reveals that there is fast dynamic response using GA PID relative to PSO PID even though the difference is not significant that may be due to stochastic feature of the metahueristic optimization algorithms. In summary, the optimal combination of PID controller algorithms' parameters can give robust performance compared to PID controller designed using the classical approaches or manual tuning techniques. © 2024 IEEE.

Human action recognition (HAR) is a computer vision technique used to understand the activity of the action performed in the scene. computer vision technology has become popular and is applied in various areas like surveillance systems, robot vision, satellite imaging, etc. However, using computer vision in human activity recognition is still challenging due to the dynamic movement of human motion, noise, occlusion, complex background, variable dressing style, varying illumination, and others. Various research has been conducted to address these problems, yet they remain challenging. In this study, we applied human action recognition techniques to interpret the meaning of Tekele Zemamie's actions in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Tekele Zemamie is church choirs' most common activity during stage ceremonies and other events. To carry out the research experimental work we have prepared 900 video clip datasets. The dataset was recorded in a 2.5-meter distance using a 48MP Camera. From the dataset, 80% was used for training and the remaining 20% was used to test the model's performance. We applied skip frame selection techniques to a single video by selecting 30 frames and we applied spatial and temporal feature extraction techniques. To overcome the stated problems and to develop the recognition model experimental works have been examined using two deep-learning models CNN-LSTM and CNN-Bi-LSTM, and we achieved 95% and 97% recognition accuracy respectively. From the proposed models, CNN-Bi-LSTM works better than the other model. © 2024 IEEE.

Ethiopia's primary export is coffee, which contributes significantly to the country's foreign exchange earnings. In Ethiopia, there are numerous types of coffee beans. Based on their respective geographic origins, these beans differ from one another in terms of quality, color, shape, and other characteristics. These coffee beans are categorized based on where they were grown. However, visual inspection, which is subjective, time-consuming, and prone to error, is used to categorize coffee beans. The goal of this research is to create a suitable system that categorizes various Ethiopian coffee varietals according to the location where they were grown. Six coffee-growing regions provided sample coffees (Harar, Jimma, Limu, Sidama, Yirgachafe, and Wombera). To reduce environmental influences and eliminate variance, an Epson L360 scanner was used to capture input images. 100 images were taken from each region. The total number of images taken was 600, which contained 12604 coffee beans. Out of the total data sets, 75% were used for training and 25% for testing to assess the classification accuracy. Morphological operations and marker-based watershed algorithms were used to segment coffee beans even if they were mutually touched. This research extracted sixty-four Convolutional neural network (CNN) features, five morphological features and five Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) features from each coffee bean for the classification process. K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers have been evaluated on the extracted feature. The experimental result showed that SVM gave (90.16%) better classification accuracy. © 2024 IEEE.

Understanding the electrical energy consumption load profile of the rural household is a necessary first step in the economical and reliable sizing of standalone renewable-based power supply systems for rural communities. The electric demand is highly stochastic and varies from time to time, day to day, and season to season. This paper mainly focuses on proposing a new method and constructing a household synthetic load profile based on a stochastic, bottom-up approach while taking into account the household appliances’ technical and operational characteristics without the need for measured historical data. The average energy consumption and stochastic load profile of a single household and a sample rural village in Ethiopia with ten households during weekdays, weekends, and holidays are presented and analyzed for rural electrification. The synthetic load profile is constructed with 1-min high resolution and implemented using MATLAB software. The daily energy demand of a middle-class single family is obtained as 2.029 kWh/day, 2.347 kWh/day, and 2.684 kWh/day on weekdays, weekends, and holidays, respectively. The daily energy usage is increased to 5.084 kWh/day, 5.396 kWh/day, and 6.728 kWh/day for weekdays, weekends, and holidays, respectively, when additional electric stove and blender loads are used. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
