A recommender system typically assumes that each row of the user-item rating matrix reflects the preferences of a single user. However, in many cases, an account is shared among multiple household members, resulting in mixed ratings data that do not accurately represent individual preferences. As a consequence, the recommendations will fail to align with the specific interests of each user. To address this issue, we introduce the concept of a "user character," which represents a common latent factor in both movie and account features. By establishing a movie feature matrix based on these character representations, we can identify the presence of different characters in shared accounts. This is achieved by factoring the account feature binary matrix from the rating matrix, a process that can be modeled as a binary quadratic optimization problem. For scalability, we relax the binary constraint using a penalty function and approximate the solutions through the gradient descent method. Additionally, we apply a thresholding function to obtain binary solutions that reveal the user characters within each account. Once we identify the characters associated with each account, we can learn users' distinct preferences through a demixing procedure. This allows us to reconstruct the rating matrix so that each row accurately represents a single user's preferences. To evaluate our method, we generated a shared account dataset from MovieLens ratings based on the CAMRa2011 dataset. Experiments conducted on this dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. © 2024 IEEE.

Registration of point clouds is a fundamental task in robotic SLAM pipelines. Typically this task is performed only on point clouds of the same sensor or at least the same sensing modality. However, robots designed for challenging environments are often equipped with redundant sensors for the same task where some sensors are more accurate and others are more robust against disturbing environmental conditions. Being able to register the data across the modalities is an important step to more fault-tolerant localization and mapping. We therefore propose a learning framework, which describes the points in the point cloud invariant of their modality. This description is then used in a transformer-like model to find point matches for the registration process. We demonstrate our results using a scanning lidar and radar sensor on our own and publicly available datasets. © 2024 IEEE.

The robust stability study of the classic Smith predictor-based control system for uncertain fractional-order plants with interval time delays and interval coefficients is the emphasis of this *** uncertainties are a type of parametric uncertainties that cannot be avoided when modeling real-world ***,in the considered Smith predictor control structure it is supposed that the controller is a fractional-order proportional integral derivative(FOPID)*** the best of the authors'knowledge,no method has been developed until now to analyze the robust stability of a Smith predictor based fractional-order control system in the presence of the simultaneous uncertainties in gain,time-constants,and time *** three primary contributions of this study are as follows:ⅰ)a set of necessary and sufficient conditions is constructed using a graphical method to examine the robust stability of a Smith predictor-based fractionalorder control system—the proposed method explicitly determines whether or not the FOPID controller can robustly stabilize the Smith predictor-based fractional-order control system;ⅱ)an auxiliary function as a robust stability testing function is presented to reduce the computational complexity of the robust stability analysis;andⅲ)two auxiliary functions are proposed to achieve the control requirements on the disturbance rejection and the noise ***,four numerical examples and an experimental verification are presented in this study to demonstrate the efficacy and significance of the suggested technique.

With the increasing penetration of photovoltaic (PV) systems posing challenges to power system stability, this paper investigates the effectiveness of grid-forming controlled PV systems in providing frequency ancillary services. The study implements the Virtual Synchronous Machine strategy, utilizing DC-link capacitor energy for inertial response provision (DCVQVSM), integrated within a grid-forming topology. To ensure power-frequency droop control, an additional control loop is introduced within the DCVQ-VSM topology. The efficacy of this control system is proved through simulations conducted on a simple two-bus system and a fully-electrified active distribution network (ADN). Both case studies demonstrate the successful operation of grid-forming controlled PV systems, highlighting their capability to influence power system frequency dynamics. The analysis underscores the significance of deloading PV operation in facilitating flexibility services provision, thereby enhancing the reliability and resilience of system operation. © 2024 IEEE.

A learning artificial visual system for motion direction detection

Research on the visual system and its development is not only crucial for understanding how we see and interpret the environment from basic visual processing to complex perception but also aids in the development of technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and computer vision. In our previous paper, we have proposed a novel biological motion direction detection mechanism. Based on this mechanism, the authors of this paper proposed a learning artificial visual system (AVS) and use it to achieve motion direction detection. The learning AVS consists of two layers: the local visual feature detective neuron layer and the global feature detective neuron layer. For local motion direction detection, we use dendritic neurons to implement local motion direction-detective neurons and use them to extract local motion direction information. Global feature detective neurons are simply implemented by summing the local motion direction-detective neurons in each direction of possible motion. We trained the learning AVS by eliminating unnecessary branches or synapses and keeping only those that are strongly connected to the function of motion direction detection. computer simulations demonstrate that AVS can learn the correct motion direction of objects with different shapes, size and positions. We compare the performance of AVS with support vector machine (SVM) and traditional convolutional neural networks (CNNs)—LeNet-5 and EfficientNet-B0 (EfN)—in motion direction detection and find that our learning AVS has better recognition accuracy, noise immunity and less demands on size of dataset and learning costs. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

An efficient cloud based face recognition system for e-health secured login using steerable pyramid transform and local directional pattern

This paper proposes a face recognition system based on steerable pyramid transform (SPT) and local directional pattern (LDP) for e-health secured login in cloud domain. In an e-health login, patients periodically forget their self-made login username and password. This face recognition system can replace the traditional login system. In the proposed system, SPT can decompose a face image into several sub-bands of different scales and orientations, and LDP can encode the sub-bands in binary texture pattern. The LDP binary pattern was obtained by computing the edge response values in all eight directions at each pixel position and generating a code from the relative strength magnitude. Therefore, SPT–LDP design represents a face image in a robust way which includes multiple information sources from different scales and orientations. The proposed system is tested on standard benchmark facial recognition technology (FERET) and extended Yale-B databases. Further, the efficiency of the proposed system is proved by comparing recognition rates with other existing descriptor based methods. From the experimental results it is observed that the proposed system achieves 99.79% recognition in fb set, 90.72% in fc set, 84.97% in dup I set, and 87.69% in dup II set for FERET database and 100% in sub2 set, 100% in sub3 set, 96% in sub4 set and 95% in sub5 set for extended Yale-B database which is better than the existing methods. © Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2018.

We address a problem involving a buyer seeking to train a logistic regression model by acquiring data from privacy-sensitive sellers. Along with compensating the sellers for their data, the buyer provides differential privacy guarantees to them where the payments depend on the privacy guarantees. In addition, each seller has a different privacy sensitivity associated with their data, which is the cost per unit of loss of privacy. The buyer transacts sequentially with the sellers, wherein the seller will disclose their privacy sensitivity, and the buyer immediately provides a payment and guarantees differential privacy. After receiving the payment, the seller provides their data to the buyer. The buyer’s goal is to optimize a weighted combination of test loss and payments, i.e., achieve a tradeoff between getting a good ML model and limiting its payments. Additionally, the buyer must design the payments and differential privacy guarantees in an online fashion. Further, the online problem is historydependent, which adds to the challenge. Consequently, we design a payment mechanism that ensures incentive compatibility and individual rationality and is asymptotically optimal. Additionally, we also provide experimental results to validate our findings.

This study presented a surface-functionalized sensor probe using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES)self-assembled monolayers on a Kretschmann-configured plasmonic *** probe featured stacked nanocomposites of gold(via sputtering)and graphene quantum dots(GQD,via spin-coating)for highly sensitive and accurate uric acid(UA)detection within the physiological *** encompassed the field emission scanning electron microscopy for detailed imaging,energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy for elemental analysis,and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy for molecular *** functionalization increased sensor sensitivity by 60.64%,achieving 0.0221°/(mg/dL)for the gold-GQD probe and 0.0355°/(mg/dL)for the gold-APTES-GQD probe,with linear correlation coefficients of 0.8249 and 0.8509,*** highest sensitivity was 0.0706°/(mg/dL),with a linear correlation coefficient of 0.993 and a low limit of detection of 0.2 mg/***,binding affinity increased dramatically,with the Langmuir constants of 14.29μM^(-1)for the gold-GQD probe and 0.0001μM^(-1)for the gold-APTES-GQD probe,representing a 142900-fold *** probe demonstrated notable reproducibility and repeatability with relative standard deviations of 0.166%and 0.013%,respectively,and exceptional temporal stability of 99.66%.These findings represented a transformative leap in plasmonic UA sensors,characterized by enhanced precision,reliability,sensitivity,and increased surface binding capacity,synergistically fostering unprecedented practicality.

This paper presents a software-defined 1TX/2RX frequency-division duplex (FDD) transceiver front-end that allows simultaneous transmit-and-receive operation in close proximity wireless channels using frequency-selective dual-band self-interference cancellation (SIC). The proposed front-end includes a tunable RF tap and a multi-tap baseband FIR filter to suppress the Tx self-interference in the Tx band and in two symmetric adjacent channels where reception takes place, respectively. The FIR filter's weights are computed using a dual-band least squares algorithm, and closed-form expressions are derived in detail. Measurement results from an FDD front-end prototype show a total of 90 dB cancellation in both Rx bands simultaneously, with 40 dB of passive isolation due to the leakage channel's attenuation and 50 dB by the active FIR canceller. © 2023 IEEE.
