Time Series Forecasting Using Improved Empirical Fourier Decomposition and High-Order Intuitionistic FCM: Applications in Smart Manufacturing systems

Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) have been proven effective in modeling and predicting stationary time series, yet challenges persist when dealing with time-varying nonstationary time series characterized by dynamic statistical features. This paper presents a robust hybrid predictive approach, which combines an Improved version of Empirical Fourier Decomposition (IEFD) with High-Order Intuitionistic Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (HIFCM), termed IEFD-HIFCM, to address these challenges in time series forecasting, focusing on manufacturing applications. IEFD-HIFCM offers three key contributions to overcome existing limitations in the FCM-based time series forecasting literature. First, we introduce IEFD to extract features from the original time series that later to be fed into the HIFCM, addressing the shortcomings of established methods such as Empirical Wavelet Transform, Variational Mode Decomposition, and Fourier Decomposition. Second, by using HIFCM, the approach possesses an answer for uncertainty by considering the degree of hesitation between nodes in the cognitive map. Third, this paper combines Elastic-net with an enhanced version of the grey wolf optimizer to optimize the weights and parameters of HIFCM as a whole, rectifying the issue with earlier FCM-based predictors that optimize individual components separately. IEFD-HIFCM's performance is validated through comparisons with state-of-the-art methods using a mathematically generated non-stationary signal. Additionally, the proposed approach is tested on four real-world smart manufacturing and supply chain datasets, yielding highly accurate results. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of IEFD-HIFCM in enhancing time series forecasting accuracy and reducing forecasting errors. © 1993-2012 IEEE.

Sentiment analysis within Online Social Networks (OSNs) becomes a major challenge. Mainly, because of the large amount of data on social networks and the mix of different languages that can be used in these environments. Due to the lack of existing research and datasets on code-switched Arabic-English sentiment analysis, this study creates a new dataset collected from various online social networks. The data is subjected to several preprocessing steps before being analyzed using various deep learning architectures. Moreover, a thorough evaluation of the preprocessing techniques and the performance of the deep learning models have been conducted. This is achieved using comprehensive Twitter datasets in Arabic and English. The study reveals that individual deep learning architectures, specifically, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Bidirectional Long Short Term Memory (Bi-LSTM), and LSTM demonstrated superior results compared to their hybrid counterparts. Notably, CNN emerged as the most accurate model with an accuracy of 83%, followed closely by Bi-LSTM at 82.3%. Additionally, the paper presents the deployment of an automated machine learning tool, which is Auto-Keras. Furthermore, it designs an optimized sentiment analysis model that aims to enhance accuracy. This approach leads to an increase in the model accuracy to 86%.

The sunflower array topology concept is introduced, for the first time, to the constrained infinitesimal dipole modeling (IDM) technique to increase the computational efficiency and reduce the modeling errors. The concept is applied to embedded element pattern predictions via matrix inversion. A novel study on the impact of the type and orientation of the dipoles on the IDM performance in pattern mean square error (MSE) and stability against noise (linked to the matrix condition number) is conducted. A 5 by 5 patch antenna array modeled with 81 dipoles is used for demonstration. It is shown that using magnetic dipoles (oriented in the direction of a radiating edge of the patch) in IDM yields the optimal performance. Besides, the sunflower topology significantly lowers the MSE (by 5 dB, on average), while reducing the condition number by a factor of 10.

Both thermal and electromagnetic performance of substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) and microstrip line-fed shaped-beam arrays with slot and patch radiating elements are conducted. Three array types operating at 26 GHz band, namely SIW slot array, SIW array with patches, and proximity coupled patch array, are considered. The array performances regarding shaped radiation pattern stability with frequency and maximal temperature at the power amplifier chips are discussed. The study highlights intriguing trade-offs between radiation pattern performance and cooling ability in phased arrays.

This paper presents a study on the effect of using a smaller number of inputs in the FPGA logic block calculated according to a pre-compiled model based on Rent’s rule. This rule, when applied to the FPGA logic block with a logic block crossbar, allows for the reduction of the size of its multiplexers, thereby reducing its area and the delays in the switching circuits. The study uses a set of benchmark circuits, which are implemented in FPGA architectures with predefined parameters. The obtained results allow for comparing the architectures based on the total area and the critical path delays of the benchmark circuits.

Most existing personalized automatic lane-change systems rely on manual driving data, but obtaining such data for future highly automated driving systems will become increasingly difficult. Emphasis should be placed on the bidirectional interaction between humans and intelligent vehicles. However, little research has explored how the aggressiveness of automated driving systems affects drivers, hindering personalization through human-vehicle interaction. To address this, this study investigates how the aggressiveness of automated lane-change systems affects drivers’ subjective perception and gaze behavior. A driving simulator experiment was conducted where 22 participants experienced automatic lane-change systems. These systems featured varying levels of aggressiveness in lane change decisions, implemented using a previously proposed fuzzy-based model. The experiment entailed the collection of both subjective perceptions and gaze patterns from the participants. The research findings indicate that the aggressiveness of automatic lane changes simultaneously affects drivers’ perceptions, particularly safety evaluations and decision agreement, as well as gaze patterns toward the rear vehicle in the target lane. This implies that the relative driving status of the rear vehicle is the primary factor influencing drivers’ subjective perceptions during automatic lane changes. These results affirm the potential of personalizing automated driving systems through human-machine interaction, promising advancement in future highly automated driving systems. Further analysis of the experimental results provides practical suggestions for implementing this personalization approach.

Drones have become more popular in recent years and this technology has dramatically advanced. Drones are starting to become essential tools in many operations such as surveillance, delivery, and more. A communication system is an essential challenge in drones that determines the drone’s capabilities of guiding, positioning, controlling, and transmission of information remotely. This paper introduces the current drone Radio Frequency (RF) communication technologies by specifying and explaining their features. These technologies represent IoT devices, Satellites, Global System for Mobile (GSM), Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), Remote control, Bluetooth, WiFi, and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Furthermore, a comparison of ability in working in various environments is provided between the RF communication systems such as urban areas, remote areas, sea, and high altitude. It is found that each RF communication system is useful for a different scenario. The widespread use of photovoltaic power generations (PVs) and plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) technologies has many advantages on the environment and grid operation. However, their uncoordinated operation could result in drastic bearing on network operational criteria. This results in adverse outcomes, such as developing a non-smooth voltage profile, high active power loss, and the perilous voltage stability state. With these challenges in mind, the objective of this work is to propose a comprehensive metaheuristic optimization strategy to improve the system operational criteria in the presence of PEVs and PV units. This paper intends to analyze the impact of uncoordinated PEVs and PVs on the electric power distribution network through displaying undesired effects. To solve the PEVs/PVs optimization problem, different metaheuristic methods such as Teaching-Learning Based Optimization (TLBO), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), and Imperialistic Competition Algorithm (ICA) are implemented and compared. The proposed methods tailored based on the power grid and system restriction. Finally, the chosen optimization algorithm is implemented to determine the optimum charging/discharging power to/from PEVs in a typical IEEE standard network. To have a more realistic case study, Tesla Motors S P100D electric vehicle specifications are considered in this study. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
