"kabootar": Towards Informal, Trustworthy, and Community-Based FinTech for Marginalized Immigrants

Financial technology (FinTech) platforms often exclude certain countries from their services due to global political conflicts. As a result, immigrants from these neglected countries struggle with transferring money to and from their homeland through formal mechanisms. Instead, they get involved in informal transnational transactions that, while flexible, are often risky and full of hassles. We looked into this issue through an online survey (n=127) and engaged with multiple stakeholders (n=16), including the Iranian immigrant community in Canada, to co-design an application called ?Kabootar' that matches senders and receivers of money across borders. In this application, a sender-receiver pair is matched with a pertinent pair sending money in the opposite direction. By facilitating two intra-national transactions in local currencies instead of two relatively complicated inter-national transactions, the need for money to cross borders is eliminated while staying within the boundaries of the law. Our user study (n=13) revealed several tensions in users trusting such informal transnational transactions. This work contributes to CSCW, HCI, and social computing's growing scholarship in personalized and collaborative computing technologies by advocating for a novel design approach based on collaboration and informality and extends their scope to the domain of FinTech for politically marginalized communities. © 2022 ACM.

Experimental Investigation of Long-term Ageing Effect on the Structural and Electrochemical Behaviour of Self-organized TiO2 Array Nanotubes on Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

Background: The correlation between anodization conditions and the ageing effect on TiO2 nanotubes (TNT) surface has been widely studied in different media and conditions (physiological solu-tions, mechanical stresses in water, etc.) for the prediction of their behaviour over a long period of time. In the present study, the synthesized TiO2 nanotubes (TNT) from Ti-6Al-4V alloy, which were left unattended and exposed to environmental conditions (i.e., humidity and ambient temperature) for more than 4 years, were investigated to underline any important alteration/changes and ageing effects, on the surface morphology, the surface composition, and the electrochemical behaviour. The nanotubes were made in 2018 by anodization in different potentials (20V, 40V, 50V, and 60V) for different times (30 min, 60 min, 90 min, 150 min and 180 min) in an Ethylene Glycol solution for other purposes. Methods: For the surface morphology characterisation, electronic microscopy (SEM) was performed to depict any tendency with anodization conditions: potential and time. The comparison study between the obtained results and the SEM pictures taken on similar samples made and characterized under the same conditions in 2018, reveals a noticeable alteration in the morphology and a change in the TNT’s external diameter. Surface composition was checked using energy dispersive spectrometry (EDXS). The EDXS spectra analysis was realised to investigate the storage time impact on structure surface stability. A drastic decrease in the amount of oxygen was noticed on all of the surfaces where wettability measurements by contact angle were performed to confirm the latter. The verification of the hydrophobicity of TNT surfaces attested that all aged samples are hydrophobic in concordance with EDXS analysis and X-ray photoe-lectron spectroscopy (XPS). Physical unclonable function (PUF) utilizes the tiny deviations in the chip manufacturing to generate unique identity keys. Traditional PUFs are generally implemented on dedicated circuit structures, which may not be effective in resource-constrained Internet environments. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a software PUF based on Digital Signal Processor (DSP-PUF). The DSP-PUF uses the timing violation of the internal registers of the chip to generate random response. Primarily, the mechanism of generating abnormal information between timing paths and registers in DSP chip is analyzed. Secondly, the overclocking clock is applied to make the DSP work abnormally, and the unique and unclonable random response is generated according to the dependence of the response on the path delay. Eventually, DSP-28335 is selected as the DSP-PUF carrier, and the DSP-PUF response extraction is completed by computer, oscilloscope, DSP and other equipment. The test results indicate that the 12000 bit responses generated by DSP-PUF has passed the NIST randomness test, and the worst case reliability is 88.01% in the temperature range of $20^{\circ} C-80 ^\circ \mathrm{C}$ . Moreover, the proposed DSP-PUF does not use additional circuit structure, and does not need to change the existing circuit structure. It is suitable for privacy information encryption in resource constrained Internet of things (IoT).

The main focus of this research is on improving the performance of dynamic systems with actuator non-linearities and time-varying disturbances. To this end, using the concept of finite-time stability, a novel observer is presented to estimate the disturbances in systems with input non-linearities. Then, introducing an innovative sliding manifold, a robust observer-based technique is derived to guarantee the finite-time stability of the sliding surface. Hence, the closed-loop system would be stable in the presence of hard non-linearities and time-varying disturbances. The performance of the proposed approach was assessed in using a simulation study of two numerical examples. The obtained results and comparison with a conventional method confirmed the benefits of the suggested approach. © 2022 The Authors. Dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (DTP-PMSM) has received extensive interests due to its inherent fault-tolerant capability. However, conventional single-virtual-vector-based predictive current control (SVV-PCC) for DTP-PMSM with open-phase fault (OPF) presents poor steady-state performance and high computational burden. To address these issues, a multi-virtual-vector-based PCC (MVV-PCC) for DTP-PMSM with OPF is proposed in this paper. Therein, two virtual vectors and one zero vector with optimal duty cycles are determined in each sampling period to improve the steady-state performance. A simplification strategy for selecting the optimal virtual vectors and calculating the optimal duty cycles is established to reduce the computational burden in digital implementation. Extensive comparisons are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed MVV-PCC scheme. © 2023 IEEE.

Radioactive materials are an attractive target for terrorist or criminal groups, because they can be used throughout the world in applications including agriculture, industry, medicine, scientific research, transport, and water desalination. Criminals can build dirty bombs by using these radioactive materials. The dirty bomb has harmful consequences on humanity. Keeping radioactive materials from any malevolent human attack is a must. Therefore, this work aims to strengthen the Physical Protection System (PPS) in nuclear facilities against criminal activities. This system works to provide the detection function of adversary actions through integrating various components. These components include Internet-of-Things (IoT) controller, magnetic sensors, vibration sensors, and Passive Infra-Red (PIR) motion detection sensors with cloud-based IoT platform and mobile application for monitoring and auditing purposes, remotely. The proposed work is intended for securing nuclear facility that contains radioactive materials through detection using various sensors and IoT controllers. A controller detects trigger signals from any sensor, an alarm and warning signs are sent to the dashboard and smartphone over the Internet. © 2021 IEEE.

Intrusion Detection System (IDS) must be developed based on latest live traffic dataset. This will facilitate the study on new attributes of current threat. Once again, researchers are locked on the same vicious circle of inability to access live traffic dataset. This is coupled with public domain logged dataset may not be useful for a new threat research. Due to these standing hurdles, Pseudo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) is used to generate synthetic dataset in IDS studies. One of its components is the Digital to Analog (D/A) converter. There are two types of D/A implementations;1) through Weighted and 2) R2R resistors. This paper compares the advantages and the disadvantages of designing D/A converter by using the abovementioned resistors. It is advisable to opt for R2R version over Weighted Resistor since it is easier and practical to choose the multiple types of resistors during circuit design process. Furthermore, the shifted parallel output from the circuit can be synchronized by the proposed PLL circuit. © 2023 IEEE.

Power electronics circuits are useful for changing the waveform of a power supply from DC to AC, and these electronic circuits, of which the power inverter is one of them, play a crucial role when it comes to the management of renewable energy sources and the conversion of power supply waveforms. Research for artificial intelligence applications to predict the non-linear behavior of power inverters has garnered prominence recently. This study proposes a novel bidirectional long-short-term memory (BiLSTM) based deep learning model to predict the current value of the inverter based on the duty cycle, voltage values, motor rotation speed, and mean phase voltage of the inverter for the first time. The proposed model was compared to mainly used recurrent neural network (RNN) variations such as long-short term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU). According to the experimental findings, it was observed that the proposed model yielded lower mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), root mean square error (RMSE), and higher r-squared (R2) results for predicting the current values of three phases. Therefore, it can be inferred that the proposed model is effective for current prediction.
