Microdroplet energy has emerged as a viable renewable energy source. Previous droplet triboelectric nanogenerators have made significant advancements in mechanical energy harvesting performance. However, these generators mainly focus on capturing liquid–solid contact energy while neglecting substrate deformation energy. Moreover, certain issues, such as inability to store energy and surface deterioration due to continuous impact of droplets, lead to output instability and a reduced lifespan, thus narrowing the scope of their potential applications. Here, a novel hydrovoltaic-piezoelectric hybridized device (HPeD) is reported that integrates hydrocapacitor, aluminum–air (Al–air) battery, and piezoelectric nanogenerator technologies through a green design strategy. Impinged by a 40-μL water droplet, the HPeD yields a potential window of 1.54 V within approximately 1 minute, further boosting to 1.86 V under external vertical pressure. The generated energy was greatly stored for up to 5.7 days. This all-solid-state device also inhibits electrolyte leakage during idle periods and controls reversible reactions to minimize corrosion, thereby extending its lifespan. Furthermore, the HPeD is successfully used as a piezoelectric nanogenerator/sensor that can operate continuously to detect external mechanical stimulus. This study paves the way for the advancement of next-generation flexible hybrid devices, capable of multifunctionality in both energy harvesting and sensing. © 2024, The Authors. The recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, which is a typical Delay-Doppler (DD) communication scheme, has attracted significant attention thanks to its appealing performance over doublyselective channels. In this paper, we present the fundamentals of general DD communications from the viewpoint of the Zak transform. We start our study by constructing DD domain basis functions aligning with the time-frequency (TF)- consistency condition, which are globally quasi-periodic and locally twisted-shifted. We unveil that these features are translated to unique signal structures in both time and frequency, which are beneficial for communication purposes. Then, we focus on the practical implementations of DD Nyquist communications, where we show that rectangular windows achieve perfect DD orthogonality, while truncated periodic signals can obtain sufficient DD orthogonality. Particularly, smoothed rectangular window with excess bandwidth can result in a slightly worse orthogonality but better pulse localization in the DD domain. Furthermore, we present a practical pulse shaping framework for general DD communications and derive the corresponding input-output relation under various shaping pulses. Our numerical results agree with our derivations and also demonstrate advantages of DD communications over conventional orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

This work presents the application of a planar microstrip metamaterial (MM)- motivated sensor in the form of a split-ring resonator (SRR) for the detection and quantification of water adulteration in honey samples. The proposed sensor utilizes inexpensive software-defined radio (SDR) measurements, offering a cost-effective solution. Unlike previous MM sensors employing SRR configuration, our proposed MM-motivated sensor is integrated with a microstrip feedline and an additional vertical bar, enhancing its sensing capability. To enable accurate measurements, a simple calibration procedure based on baseline normalization is implemented, allowing for amplitude-only transmission measurements (|S21|) using the SDR. A special sample holder was designed to increase repeatability of measurements. We separately employ two post-processing techniques, namely the rolling average (RA) approach and the Savitzky-Golay (SG) filter, to effectively eliminate ripples in the measured |S21| data obtained from the SDR. For validation and evaluation of the proposed sensor and post-processing techniques, measurements of flower honey samples with water adulteration levels (δ) up to 10% (mass-to-mass basis) were also performed using a vector network analyzer. The resonance frequency of |S21| is utilized as the basis for analysis. We establish a metric function (linear function) that correlates the shift in resonance frequency with the δ. It is observed that this function fits to measured resonance frequency values with an R2 value greater than 0.96 for both post-processing techniques with or without the sample holder. By inverting this function, we can predict δ with considerable accuracy for a given resonance frequency by using another linear function. It is observed that percentage variations between predicted and measured δ values are between 1.54% and 6.46% for testing samples with δ = 5% and δ = 7%. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

We consider unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless systems where downlink communications between a multi-antenna UAV and multiple users are assisted by a hybrid active-passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We aim at a fairness design of two typical UAV-enabled networks, namely the static-UAV network where the UAV is deployed at a fixed location to serve all users at the same time, and the mobile-UAV network which employs the time division multiple access protocol. In both networks, our goal is to maximize the minimum rate among users through jointly optimizing the UAV’s location/trajectory, transmit beamformer, and RIS coefficients. The resulting problems are highly nonconvex due to a strong coupling between the involved variables. We develop efficient algorithms based on block coordinate ascend and successive convex approximation to effectively solve these problems in an iterative manner. In particular, in the optimization of the mobile-UAV network, closed-form solutions to the transmit beamformer and RIS passive coefficients are derived. Numerical results show that a hybrid RIS equipped with only 4 active elements and a power budget of 0 dBm offers an improvement of 38% − 63% in minimum rate, while that achieved by a passive RIS is only about 15%, with the same total number of elements. © 2023, CC BY.

Piezoelectric energy harvester has the capability in powering small scale semiconductor devices particularly in the low power sensors applications in Internet of Things (IoT) environment. It is known that the bandwidth and power of these energy harvesters can be improved by increasing the number of cantilevers in the system. This research presents the electromechanical model of multimode piezoelectric energy harvesters with different polarity connections between the cantilever beams to improve the broadband performance of frequency response in the system. The theoretical model and experimental results of the proposed multi-mode system exhibited a significant escalation of output voltage at the gap between two resonance frequencies when the polarity configuration in the cantilever connection is reversed accordingly. The outcomes designate that by interchanging the polarity of the electrical connection between the cantilever beams, the output voltage between the resonance frequency of the multi-mode system can be increase significantly in comparison with the conventional series interconnection.

Robust quantum control is crucial for realizing practical quantum technologies. Energy landscape shaping offers an alternative to conventional dynamic control, providing theoretically enhanced robustness and simplifying implementation for certain applications. This work demonstrates the feasibility of robust energy landscape control in a practical implementation with ultracold atoms. We leverage a digital mirror device (DMD) to shape optical potentials, creating complex energy landscapes. To achieve a desired objective, such as efficient quantum state transfer, we formulate a novel hybrid optimization approach that effectively handles both continuous (laser power) and discrete (DMD pixel activation) control parameters. This approach combines constrained quasi-Newton methods with surrogate models for efficient exploration of the vast parameter space. Furthermore, we introduce a framework for analyzing the robustness of the resulting control schemes against experimental uncertainties. By modeling uncertainties as structured perturbations, we systematically assess controller performance and identify robust solutions. We apply these techniques to maximize spin transfer in a chain of trapped atoms, achieving high-fidelity control while maintaining robustness. Our findings provide insights into the experimental viability of controlled spin transfer in cold atom systems. More broadly, the presented optimization and robustness analysis methods apply to a wide range of quantum control problems, offering a toolkit for designing and evaluating robust controllers in complex experimental settings. Communication-centric Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) has been recognized as a promising methodology to implement wireless sensing functionality over existing network architectures, due to its cost-effectiveness and backward compatibility to legacy cellular systems. However, the inherent randomness of the communication signal may incur huge fluctuations in sensing capabilities, leading to unfavorable detection and estimation performance. To address this issue, we elaborate on random ISAC signal processing methods in this article, aiming at improving the sensing performance without unduly deteriorating the communication functionality. Specifically, we commence by discussing the fundamentals of sensing with random communication signals, including the performance metrics and optimal ranging waveforms. Building on these concepts, we then present a general framework for random ISAC signal transmission, followed by an in-depth exploration of time-domain pulse shaping, frequency-domain constellation shaping, and spatial-domain precoding methods. We provide a comprehensive overview of each of these topics, including models, results, and design guidelines. Finally, we conclude this article by identifying several promising research directions for random ISAC signal transmission. © 2025, CC BY-SA.

This investigation explores student expectations and perceptions regarding higher education institutions, focusing on aligning professional programs with student career aspirations. The study evaluates how effectively academic institutions understand and meet training needs essential for student success in professional fields. Students were categorized using the Iterative Dichotomiser 3 methodology to forecast their training requirements. Analytical tools such as the confusion matrix and the ROC curve assessed the precision of these predictions. The results show a specificity rate of 74.1 %, a sensitivity of 78.6%, and an overall accuracy of 76.7 % . The combined sensitivity and specificity score is 3.527, and the empirical area under the ROC curve is 0.76, suggesting the model's reasonable efficacy. The findings indicate a significant student demand for enhanced instruction in soft skills, underscoring the need for educational institutions to adapt their curricula to better prepare students for professional challenges.
