Static power converters have widespread applications, such as ground power units (GPU) for airplanes. A modified static ground power unit based on 5-level Active Natural Point Clamped (5L-ANPC) multilevel converter is proposed in this paper. A new LS-PSC-PWM switching method for the 5L-ANPC converter is defined in this paper. The provided THD value of proposed converter will be less than those the traditional PSC-PWM switching method. The output voltage has the harmonics around the 2k times of switching frequency where k is the integer number. It results in smaller passive components that can satisfy the THD requirement for AC currents. Also, decreasing inductance will increase GPU voltage control capability and will improve GPU's dynamic performance. Simulation and experimental results verify the validity of proposed converter. © 2015 IEEE.

Transformer based Z-source (trans-Z-source) inverters are recently proposed by extending the traditional Z-source inverter with higher buck-boost capability as well as reducing the passive components at the same time. This research work proposes a new topology for high-boost trans-Z-source inverter. In traditional trans-Z-source inverters for high boosting voltage, low modulation index is required, so under these conditions output voltage will have low quality with high total harmonic distortion. In order to achieve high DC-link voltage with low shoot-through duty cycle the new topology has added two transformers, two capacitors and three diodes to the Z-impedance network. With low shoot-through duty cycle and less active and passive components the new topology produces output voltage with high quality and low THD. Meanwhile in compare to other high boost topologies the proposed scheme, for the same boost factor and the same output power, has smaller transformer size and smaller capacitance and so this leads to inexpensive inverter. Comparison between the proposed topology and previously proposed schemes in terms of voltage stress on diodes and capacitors, and SDP factors of diodes has been made and the results verify the priority of proposed topology. The operating principle of the proposed topology along with transformer leakage inductance effects on voltage gain is analyzed in detail. Both simulation and experimental results verify the performance of the proposed inverter. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, a visible light communications (VLC) system prototype using organic light emitting diode (OLED) with dimming support was realized and tested. Frequency response and driving range of OLED were measured and discussed. Considering practical applications of OLED, variable pulse position modulation (VPPM) signal was used to support data transmission under dimming condition. Our prototype was able to transmit up to 85 kbps data rate using an OLED with only 7 kHz 3 dB modulation bandwidth. For the target BER=10-3 with FEC, the luminous flux could be varied within 5-8 lm. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, a visible light communications (VLC) system prototype using OLED was realized and tested. Using simple DPPM technique and comparator, our prototype was able to transmit up to 127.5 kbps data rate using an OLED with only 7 kHz 3 dB modulation bandwidth. Exploiting the frequency response of OLED, we were able to achieve a better data rate to modulation bandwidth ratio than other recent reports using OLED for VLC. © 2015 IEEE.

The production of ϒ(nS) mesons (n = 1, 2, 3) in pPb and Pbp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=8.16 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31.8 nb⁻¹. The ϒ(nS) mesons are reconstructed through their decays into two opposite-sign muons. The measurements comprise the differential production cross-sections of the ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) states, their forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors. The measurements are performed as a function of the transverse momentum p_T and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame y^* of the ϒ(nS) states, in the kinematic range p_T < 25 GeV/c and 1.5 < y^* < 4.0 (−5.0 < y^* < −2.5) for pPb (Pbp) collisions. In addition, production cross-sections for ϒ(3S) are measured integrated over phase space and the production ratios between all three ϒ(nS) states are determined. Suppression for bottomonium in proton-lead collisions is observed, which is particularly visible in the ratios. Human actions in video sequences are three-dimensional (3D) spatio-temporal signals characterizing both the visual appearance and motion dynamics of the involved humans and objects. Inspired by the success of convolutional neural networks (CNN) for image classification, recent attempts have been made to learn 3D CNNsfor recognizing human actions in videos. However, partly due to the high complexity of training 3D convolution kernels and the need for large quantities of training videos, only limited success has been reported. This has triggered us to investigate in this paper a new deep architecture which can handle 3D signals more effectively. Specifically, we propose factorized spatio-temporal convolutional networks (F_(ST)CN) thatfactorize the original 3D convolution kernel learning as a sequential process of learning 2D spatial kernels in the lower layers (called spatial convolutional layers), followed by learning 1D temporal kernels in the upper layers (called temporal convolutional layers). We introduce a novel transformation and permutation operator to make factorization in F_(ST)CN possible. Moreover to address the issue of sequence alignment, we propose an effective training and inference strategy based on sampling multiple video clips from a given action video sequence. We have tested F_(ST)CN on two commonly used benchmark datasets (UCF-101 and HMDB-51). Without using auxiliary training videos to boost the performance, F_(ST)CN outperforms existing CNN based methods and achieves comparable performance with a recent method that benefits from using auxiliary training videos.

A dual-band balanced bandpass filter(BPF) with enhanced common-mode suppression is proposed in this letter. The dual-band differential-mode(DM) bandpass response is obtained using a double-layer substrate. The stubloaded stepped-impedance resonators(SIRs) are both used in the top and bottom layers to constitute a dual-band BPF with two controllable passbands. The slotline portion in the middle layer is excited under the DM operation. Moreover, the even-symmetrical field along the slotline is highly attenuated under the common-mode(CM) excitation, thus achieving excellent CM suppression over the desired DM passbands. To verify our proposed concept, a balanced dual-band BPF, operating at 1.9 and 2.8 GHz, is designed and fabricated, and the simulated and measured results are in good agreement.

E-learning is becoming increasingly more popular. However, for such platforms (where the students and tutors are geographically separated), it is necessary to estimate the degree of students' engagement with the course contents. Such feedback is highly important and useful for assessing the teaching quality and adjusting the teaching delivery in large-scale online learning platforms. When the number of attendees is large, it is essential to obtain overall engagement feedback, but it is also challenging to do so because of the high levels of uncertainty associated with the environments and students. To handle such uncertainties, we present a type-2 fuzzy logic based system using visual RGB-D features including head pose direction and facial expressions captured from a low-cost but robust 3D camera (Kinect v2) to estimate the engagement degree of the students for both remote and on-site education. This system enriches another self-learning type-2 fuzzy logic system which provides the instructors with suggestions to vary their teaching means to suit the level of course students and improve the course instruction and delivery. This proposed dynamic e-learning environment involves on-site students, distance students, and a teacher who delivers the lecture to all attending onsite and remote students. The rules are learned from the students' behavior and the system is continuously updated to give the teacher the ability to adapt the lecture delivery instructional approach to varied learners' engagement levels. The efficiency of the proposed system has been evaluated through various real-world experiments in the University of Essex iClassroom on a sample of thirty students and six teachers. These experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed interval type-2 fuzzy logic based system to handle the faced uncertainties and produce superior improved average learners' engagements when compared to type-1 fuzzy systems and nonadaptive systems.
