Derived from the Mitragyna speciosa tree, ketum is renowned for its addictive qualities and hallucinogenic effects. Using electroencephalogram (EEG) data, this study compares the social withdrawal symptoms—specifically, depression, irritability, and restlessness—between control and ketum-dependent people. After pre-processing the EEG data, the Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (DT-CWT) was used to extract features. The study employed statistical analyses, namely the two-sample t-tests, to determine significant differences between the groups and to develop indices for social withdrawal symptoms. To verify the distinction between social withdrawal symptoms, classification models such as Coarse Decision Tree, Logistic Regression, and Cubic K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) were utilized. The EEG patterns of the control and ketum subjects differed significantly, according to the results, with Task 1 exhibiting more noticeable differences than Task 2. This study highlights the possibility of a trustworthy test for ketum-induced social withdrawal and advances the development of objective diagnostic tools for ketum-related social withdrawal.

The use of IEEE 802.15.7 for Heterogeneous Visible Light Communication (VLC) has garnered significant attention due to the expanding application area of Optical Body Area Networks (OBAN). However, lowering the packet delivery ratio has been shown in earlier research to be an effective way to cut end-device energy use. This paper presents an approach to enhance the packet delivery ratio in OBAN heterogeneous based on VLC systems. The suggested method considers store overflow when modifying the duty cycle within the IEEE 802.15.7 beacon-enabled mode. The outcomes of the simulation confirm this method's efficacy.

The recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 underscored the necessity of face recognition systems, particularly in industrial environments for attendance tracking. However, traditional approaches struggle with masked faces. This study aimed to develop robust segmentation and feature extraction algorithms to identify salient facial features and create an accurate classification system for attendance tracking despite mask-wearing. A dataset of 26 subjects was captured using a Raspberry Pi camera. Images were preprocessed, cropped, resized to 224x224 pixels, and augmented. An 80:10:10 split was used for training, validation and testing. Three deep learning models-AlexNet, ResNet 101 and MobileNet v3-were evaluated. AlexNet achieved the highest performance, with 95.83% training, 94.23% validation and 74% testing accuracy, outperforming the others. A GUI was developed based on the trained AlexNet model for attendance recording. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of deep learning, particularly AlexNet, for face recognition in industrial settings with mask-wearing.

This paper considers the distributed information bottleneck (D-IB) problem for a primitive Gaussian diamond channel with two relays and MIMO Rayleigh fading. The channel state is an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) process known at the relays but unknown to the destination. The relays are oblivious, i.e., they are unaware of the codebook and treat the transmitted signal as a random process with known statistics. The bottleneck constraints prevent the relays to communicate the channel state information (CSI) perfectly to the destination. To evaluate the bottleneck rate, we provide an upper bound by assuming that the destination node knows the CSI and the relays can cooperate with each other, and also two achievable schemes with simple symbol-by-symbol relay processing and compression. Numerical results show that the lower bounds obtained by the proposed achievable schemes can come close to the upper bound on a wide range of relevant system parameters.

In this paper, a second-order sliding mode control method is proposed for three-phase three-level grid-connected NPC inverter. The proposed second-order sliding mode control is based on super twisting algorithm which provides fast transient response and robustness to the system uncertainties and disturbances which are very important features for grid-connected inverter applications. Unlike ordinary sliding mode control, it provides continuous control feature which is easy to apply. Furthermore, the proposed approach also provides constant switching frequency and removes the chattering problem which may even cause saturation if no action is taken. The performance of the suggested control system with the three-phase three-level NPC inverter is confirmed with simulation studies. It is obviously seen that the proposed system has fast response without overshooting and oscillation. Besides, the THD level of the current injected to the grid is obtained as 1.1%. © 2021 IEEE.

A Modified Pre-Fluxing Method for the Energization of Single-Phase Transformers

Inrush current refers to the high-magnitude excitation current drawn by a transformer upon energization. The intensity of inrush current is a function of the residual flux of the transformer's core and the voltage magnitude at the energization instant. This paper proposes a method to effectively mitigate the inrush current of single-phase transformers. The proposed method overcomes the shortcomings of the well-established pre-fluxing method, and thus, is referred to as the modified pre-fluxing method. The method operates without requiring any prior knowledge regarding the transformer's design information or parameters. Accounting for uncertainties in circuit breaker closing operation, the core's residual flux is modified to an appropriate reference value, minimizing the corresponding adverse impact. The flux adjustment is accomplished by a power electronic circuitry that applies suitable voltage across the transformer's low-voltage winding. The core's residual flux is estimated after removing the DC offset present in the measured open-circuit voltage. The energization process is then initiated at an appropriate instant ensuring the core's steady-state flux matches its adjusted residual flux. The efficiency of the modified pre-fluxing method is demonstrated by conducting 12,000 simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC. A hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) setup composed of a transformer and pre-fluxing device is used for extensive experimental validation and comparison with recent energization methods under more realistic conditions. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

In this study, an indirect-field-oriented control (IFOC) of an induction motor (IM) was simulated and its speed was estimated using the model reference adaptive system (MRAS) topology of the modified voltage-model-based rotor-flux-oriented current model. As this study dealt with the convolutional neural network (CNN) implemented as the speed controller for the outer-loop control, the inner-loop control used proportional-integral (PI) control to control the current that was fed to the space vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm. The CNN used two inputs based on speed error, and it was designed and trained offline by employing the backpropagation (BP) algorithm to minimize the error between the desired speed and the speed estimated by the estimator and to improve the model's speed-tracking capability when there was an unpredicted speed at the input. The study also used a variable speed trajectory for testing with various speed references to mimic road speed conditions. The results are in good agreement with those of similar studies, and a comparison between the performances of the PI controller and the proposed CNN controller indicated that the CNN controller yielded a superior performance on IM speed.

With the proliferation of Internet of Things, a plethora of battery-powered sensor nodes are being deployed in outdoor spaces. With these soaring numbers, it has become an impractical task to replace their batteries in a year or so in operation. Therefore, it is essential to design sensor nodes that can run without battery replacement for a long time. Hence, being able to harvest power from the surrounding provides a sustainable solution. Especially, tropical countries receive an abundance of solar power throughout the year, which makes it a highly viable candidate to power the sensor nodes. Therefore, this paper presents a sensor node design that has specifically taken the solar power harvesting in tropical climates into consideration. The presented sensor node uses LoRaWAN technology for communication and the experimental work proves that a day’s solar energy harvest is enough to run the node for a several days when the battery capacity is carefully selected. Further, the study emphasizes the effects of cloudy/rainy days on the energy harvesting.
