There are some fatigue damage estimation methods of the austenitic stainless steel that uses the martensitic transformation. For instance, they are the remanent magnetization method, the excitation method, and so on. Those two methods are being researched also in our laboratory now. In the remanent magnetization method, it is well known that the relation between fatigue damage and the remanent magnetization is simple, clear, and reproducible. However, this method has the disadvantage to need a special magnetizer. This method cannot be easily used on the site such as the factory. On the other hand, because the special magnetizer is unnecessary, the excitation method can use easily on the site. The output signal of this method is small. In this paper, two fatigue evaluation methods such as the remanent magnetization method and the excitation method are introduced. In addition, we report on the result of comparing the fatigue evaluation performances of two methods.

Identification of nonlinear systems has drawn much attention in recent years. This paper presents a new identification algorithm for Hammerstein models based on bacterial foraging. In specific, the biomimicry of the bacterial chemotaxis algorithm is used to identify model parameters. A flowchart of this identification algorithm is given. Simulation and Comparison studies show that the proposed bacterial foraging based approach outperforms the particle swarm optimization in terms of both convergence and precision.

An analysis and experimental verification of the operating point stability of the line-start permanent synchronous machine (LSPMSM) supplied from a current source provided with power factor control is presented. The control system acts to inject the stator currents at a controlled angle related to the stator voltages. The machine parameters are varying because of magnetic saturation and as a result the control performances are affected by saturation. The effects of magnetic saturation and inverter imperfections are included.

A novel design method of the self-tuning control algorithm is introduced for order-varying systems. In specific, the self-tuning regulator is optimized by the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The system error can be tracked by an implicit identification fashion in order to increase precision and decrease computation time. This method is suitable for typical industrial process control, especially for order-varying and large-time-delay systems. Simulations and comparisons show its advantages over traditional methods which are based on least-squares algorithms in terms of robustness and tracing precision.

Worldwide lightning location (WWLL) using only 30 lightning sensors has been successfully achieved by using only VLF propagation in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide (EIWG). Ground propagation or mixed “sky” and ground propagation is avoided by requiring evidence of Earth-ionosphere waveguide dispersion. A further requirement is that the lightning strike must be inside the perimeter defined by the lightning sensor sites detecting the stroke. Under these conditions, the time and the location of the stroke can be determined, along with the rms errors. Lightning strokes with errors exceeding 30 ps or 10 km are rejected. To assist with identifying impulses from the same lightning stroke, the lightning sensor threshold is automatically adjusted to allow an average detection rate of three per second. This largely limits detection to the strongest 4% of all lightning strokes, of which about 40% meet the accuracy requirements for time and location.

Sliding mode control and fuzzy logic control have been combined together in order to optimize the performance given by conventional sliding mode control;especially against the effect causes by the chattering phenomenon. One approach taken by many researchers is to use fuzzy logic to smooth the chattering in sliding mode control. In this paper, a novel direction to design the fuzzy sliding controllers is proposed. In fact, the control design is based on the fuzzy model of an induction motor using the approach of Ben-Ghalia. The aim of the proposed modelling approach is to provide a fuzzy set based representation of the cascade sliding mode control of an induction motor fed by PWM voltage source inverter, which operates in a fixed reference frame. For this purpose, a new decoupled and reduced model is first proposed. Then, a set of simple surfaces and associated control laws are synthesised. A piecewise smooth control function with a threshold is adopted. However, the magnitude of this function depends closely on the upper bound of uncertainties, which include parameter variations and external disturbances. This bound is difficult to obtain prior to motor operation. To solve this problem, a fuzzy modelling approach is presented to improve the design and tuning of a fuzzy logic controller using variable structure control theory. The fuzzy controller, is designed in order to improve the control performances and to reduce the control energy and the chattering phenomenon. Simulation results reveal some very interesting features.
