Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) have been developed to reduce tendency for wheel lock and improve vehicle control during sudden braking especially on slippery road surfaces. The objective of such control is to increase wheel tractive force in the desired direction while maintaining adequate vehicle stability and steerability and also reducing the vehicle stopping distance. In this paper, a genetic-fuzzy ABS controller is designed. The objective function is defined to maintain wheel slip to a desired level so that maximum wheel tractive force and maximum vehicle deceleration are obtained. All parameters of membership functions and rules of the fuzzy system that is Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) type are obtained using a genetic algorithm. Simulation results show very good performance of the controller for different road conditions.

Since there are no Quality of Service QoS guarantees for video streaming over best-effort IP networks, adaptation for both the audio and video streams of an established real-time streaming session must be applied to respond to network congestion conditions. In many video streaming applications, either the audio or the video stream for the same audio/video streamed content is more semantically important than the other. Hence it is better to let this stream, in cases of congestion, suffers less degradation in quality even if that imposed the other stream to suffer more degradation. This paper proposes a simple but efficient application-level content aware adaptive video streaming system that is primarily configured by the previously noted more semantically important stream. The system monitors the end-to-end network congestion level. In congestion cases the system degrades in steps the quality of the less important stream first. Then it moves, if necessary, to the other stream to degrade, according to a predefined adaptation mechanism. The system then triggers when the congestion case is over in order to start upgrading the degraded streams gradually back to their initially established states if the network conditions permit This new concept in adaptation, when tested, lead video streaming applications users to be more satisfied with Internet video streaming services.

The numerical calculation of the Fresnel Transform (FST) presents significant challenges due to the high sampling rate associated with the chirp function in the kernel. The development of a general algorithm is further complicated due the fact that the output extent of the FST is dependant on the propagation distance. In this paper we implement a novel technique for calculating the FST in which we use the Wigner Distribution Function (WDF) to choose an optimal sampling rate. This method is suitable for all propagation distances. Our method can also be used to describe the effect of a lens in an optical system. A lens in an optical system is modeled as a Chirp Modulation Transform (CMT), which acts on the spatial frequency distribution of a signal in a manner that is analogous to the effect an FST has on the spatial distribution of a signal. Combining our results for the FST and the CMT we numerically calculate the light distribution at the output of both a Cai-Wang and a Lohmann Type-1 Optical Fractional Fourier Transform (OFRT) system. Analytic solutions for the OFRT of a square (1-D) and circular (1-D) aperture are presented. The numerical results are compared to the analytically derived solution.

Finding an object or a face in an input image is a search problem in the spatial domain. Neural networks have shown good results in detecting a certain face/object in a given image. In this paper, faster neural networks for face/object detection are presented. Such networks are designed based on cross correlation in the frequency domain between the input image and the input weights of neural networks. This approach is developed to reduce the computation steps required by these faster neural networks for the search process. The principle of divide and conquer strategy is applied through image decomposition. Each image is divided into small-size sub-images, and then each of them is tested separately using a single faster neural network. Furthermore, the fastest face/object detection is achieved using parallel processing techniques to test the resulting sub-images simultaneously using the same number of faster neural networks. In contrast to using faster neural networks only, the speed-up ratio is increased with the size of the input image when using faster neural networks and image decomposition. Moreover, the problem of local subimage normalization in the frequency domain is solved. The effect of image normalization on the speed-up ratio for face/object detection is discussed. Simulation results show that local subimage normalization through weight normalization is faster than subimage normalization in the spatial domain. The overall speed-up ratio of the detection process is increased as the normalization of weights is carried out off line.
