The paper presents a GaAs 32-bit IEEE floating point multiplier. A modified carry save array is used in conjunction with Booth's algorithm to reduce the partial product addition and interconnection. A special rounding technique called Trailing-1's Predictor is used to speed up the final addition and rounding. This chip uses a new layout methodology for easy design structure and improved GaAs technology layout density. The combination of the fast arithmetic architecture and compact layout style achieves 4ns multiplication time with 3.5 W power dissipation at 75°C. The area is 2.43 mm by 3.77 mm (excluding pads) and uses 28000 transistors to give a density of 3056 transistors/mm2 for 0.8μm GaAs technology. © 1995 IEEE.

This paper investigates how to control a robot manipulator, which has model uncertainties, to perform contact tasks upon an uncertain dynamic environment. In order to perform the contact tasks successfully, the robot control system has to adjust its frequency bandwidth with respect to the dynamics of its environment. In this paper, we will present a nonlinear robust model matching control approach. We first consider the environment uncertainties and propose a nonlinear method to adjust the frequency bandwidth of the reference model as well as the robot’s position controller based on the information of the interaction force, such that the robot maintains contact with its real environment. We then consider the robot’s model uncertainties and apply the nonlinear robust control theory, such that the robot control system matches the reference model, robustly. This approach measures the interaction force to adjust the robot’s position controller and eliminates the construction of a complex force feedback compensator. Experiments of a robot, with 1 d.o.f., pushing a dynamic object have been performed to show the effectiveness of this approach. © VSP and Robotics Society of Japan 1996.

His current research interest is fiber-optic sensors optical fiber science including Er-doped fibers optical waveguides and the optical reflectometry. Dr. liyama is a member of the IEEE and the Japan Society of Applied Physics. Members Ken-ichi Hayashi:received his B.E. degree in Electronic Engineering from Kanazawa University Kanazawa Japan in 1966 and his Dr. of Eng. degree from Nagoya University Nagoya Japan in 1977. Since 1966 he has been with the Department of Electronics Kanazawa University where he is now a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is currently engaged in research on applications of Er-doped optical fibers fiber-optic sensors optical waveguides and optical reflectometry. Dr. Hayashi is a member of the SICE and the IEEE.

The degradation of the spatial resolution in frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) reflectometry due to the nonlinearity in the optical frequency sweep are discussed both experimentally and theoretically. The response lag in the optical frequency change of a laser diode behind the injection current change was experimentally measured, showing that there were several time constants in the optical frequency response. The interference signals in the FMCW reflectometry were theoretically calculated by taking account of the response lag. From these calculations, the beat frequency becomes low just after the turning point of the optical frequency sweep;this is due to the response lag in the optical frequency response. As a result, the spectrum of the interference signal is spread out toward the low frequency region and spatial resolution is degraded. Moreover, the spatial resolution is seriously degraded with increasing the diagnosing distance due to the nonlinearity in the optical frequency sweep. The calculated results agree well with the measured results.

Inclusive baryon-antibaryon pair production was studied in two-photon events which were collected at the e⁺ e^- collider TRISTAN, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 303 pb^-1. Correlations between a baryon and an antibaryon were studied for their flavors (p or Λ) and their momentum vectors. The experimental results were compared with the expectations from a jet-fragmentation Monte Carlo simulation. We have found that although the ratios of the cross sections of different baryon-flavor combinations are consistent with the Monte Carlo expectations, the cross section shows an excess over the Monte Carlo expectation in a low invariant-mass region of final-state particles at large angles, that indicates a significant contribution from higher-order QCD or non-perturbative effects. The experimental data show no narrow azimuthal-angle correlation, which is expected from a jet-fragmentation Monte Carlo. A search for exclusive Λ pair production has also been made. We have no candidates and have obtained the upper limit for the cross section. © 1996 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents a new technique using delta modulation for inverter operation. Delta modulation (DM) schemes have the ability to optimize pulse width modulated (PWM) inverter waveforms online. The tuned and the multi-integrator DM are the two schemes proposed for PWM waveform synthesis so far. The methods were found useful for variable speed PWM inverter-fed AC drives. However it was observed that during tuning and filtering process, fundamental output voltage of the inverters reduced. With an aim to overcome this effect, a new technique called the variable step rectangular wave delta modulation (RWDM) is proposed. The method has the capability to maintain a near constant fundamental voltage of the output waveform of the inverters. Both analytical and experimental verifications are carried out for tuned and variable step RWDM.< >

Studies multiple-robot manipulator cooperative manipulation of an unknown dynamic object. The authors show a simple approach for each robot to identify the object dynamics through cooperation. The authors decentralize the position/internal force hybrid controller such that each robot has its controller and determines its control torque from its own feedback information. A flat diversity antenna is proposed for mobile telephone using a disk loaded monopole antenna and notch antenna arrays. The notch array designed as a turnstile antenna for receiving the magnetic field components is replaced by the disk of the disk loaded monopole antenna. Since the electric field components are received by the disk loaded monopole antenna, this combination provides an energy density reception. A prototype of the flat diversity antenna is demonstrated, and the measured results of the input impedance characteristics and the radiation patterns are also presented. © 1992 IEEE.

The authors present a novel flat antenna consisting of a disk loaded monopole and a notch array for mobile telephone. To obtain a small correlation coefficient between the notch array and the disk loaded monopole antenna, two feed circuits are proposed for the notch array. The correlation coefficient between ring patch and notch antenna of less than 0.1 is small enough for diversity branches.< >
