Investigating the impact of sensor axis combinations on activity recognition and fall detection: an empirical study

Activity recognition is a fundamental concept widely embraced within the realm of healthcare. Leveraging sensor fusion techniques, particularly involving accelerometers (A), gyroscopes (G), and magnetometers (M), this technology has undergone extensive development to effectively distinguish between various activity types, improve tracking systems, and attain high classification accuracy. This research is dedicated to augmenting the effectiveness of activity recognition by investigating diverse sensor axis combinations while underscoring the advantages of this approach. In pursuit of this objective, we gathered data from two distinct sources: 20 instances of falls and 16 daily life activities, recorded through the utilization of the Motion Tracker Wireless (MTw), a commercial product. In this particular experiment, we meticulously assembled a comprehensive dataset comprising 2520 tests, leveraging the voluntary participation of 14 individuals (comprising 7 females and 7 males). Additionally, data pertaining to 7 cases of falls and 8 daily life activities were captured using a cost-effective, environment-independent Activity Tracking Device (ATD). This alternative dataset encompassed a total of 1350 tests, with the participation of 30 volunteers, equally divided between 15 females and 15 males. Within the framework of this research, we conducted meticulous comparative analyses utilizing the complete dataset, which encompassed 3870 tests in total. The findings obtained from these analyses convincingly establish the efficacy of recognizing both fall incidents and routine daily activities. This investigation underscores the potential of leveraging affordable IoT technologies to enhance the quality of everyday life and their practical utility in real-world scenarios. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

In this study, three types of polymer-based, perovskite and dye-sensitized solar cells have been fabricated and simulated. Then, these three structures are compared in terms of output parameters such as efficiency, fill factor, fabrication methods and etc. In the fabrication of the polymer-based solar cell with Al / MEH-PPV:ZnO np / PEDOT:PSS / ITO structure, in the perovskite solar cell with Au / Spiro-OMeTAD / CH3NH3PbI3 / TiO2 / FTO structure and for the dye-sensitized solar cell with Pt / Electrolyte/ TiO2-N719 / FTO structure by the spin-coating and Dr. Blade method is used. The simulation of these three structures has been done using two software, Comsol Multiphysics and Silvaco. According to the results of experimental characterizations, the efficiency for the polymer-based solar cell is ηexp = 0.74%, the perovskite ηexp=8.66% and for the dye-sensitized ηexp=6.07%. Also, according to the simulation results, the efficiency for the polymer-based solar cell is ηcomsol=1.1%ηsilvaco=0.73%, the perovskite ηcomsol = 6.06%ηsilvaco = 8.6% and for the dye-sensitized ηcomsol=1.4%ηsilvaco=1.74%. According to the results of this study, the Perovskite solar cell is the most suitable cell in terms of efficiency and, of course, has a higher manufacturing cost than the other two types. © 2024 IEEE.

Changes in the Atmospheric Electric Field Signal(AEFS)are highly correlated with weather changes,especially with thunderstorm ***,little attention has been paid to the ambiguous weather information implicit in AEFS *** this paper,a Fuzzy C-Means(FCM)clustering method is used for the first time to develop an innovative approach to characterize the weather attributes carried by ***,a time series dataset is created in the time domain using AEFS *** AEFS-based weather is evaluated according to the time-series Membership Degree(MD)changes obtained by inputting this dataset into the ***,thunderstorm intensities are reflected by the change in distance from a thunderstorm cloud point charge to an AEF ***,a matching relationship is established between the normalized distance and the thunderstorm dominant MD in the space ***,the rationality and reliability of the proposed method are verified by combining radar charts and expert *** results confirm that this method accurately characterizes the weather attributes and changes in the AEFS,and a negative distance-MD correlation is obtained for the first *** detection of thunderstorm activity by AEF from the perspective of fuzzy set technology provides a meaningful guidance for interpretable thunderstorms.

Fires are considered a risk that causes human death and property loss. To reduce fire damage, fires must be detected and warned promptly. This paper aims to design and experimentally implement a fully-function fire detection and warning system. The developed system is based on a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) that includes various nodes distributed across the city. Each node has two main blocks which are the image processing and communication blocks. The image processing block applies the EfficientN et B0 model to detect the fire and smoke, whereas the communication block uses the Module 4G to contact the house owner over a mobile phone network and LoRa gateway to send the signal warning to the fire center over the a LoRaWAN. The Module 4G is responsible for sending captured images of suspected fire if any to the house owner's device for getting his/her acknowledgement. Then an urgent alarm message consisting of fire position and risk level are sent to the fire center if the fire is acknowledged by the house owner, otherwise, the alarm is ceased. Besides, the proposed system is installed the gas sensor, smoke sensor, water spray system and light-sound alarm to augment the reliability of fire detection. The proposed system is experimentally demonstratedand achieved positive results: Delay time sending from the proposed fire detection system to the user is recorded as 5 seconds and from the user to the fire center is recorded as 10 seconds, within a LoRaWAN coverage of 1.5km. © 2024 IEEE.

Wireless communications are particularly vulnerable to eavesdropping attacks due to their broadcast nature. To effectively deal with eavesdroppers, existing security techniques usually require accurate channel state information (CSI), e.g., for friendly jamming (FJ), and/or additional computing resources at transceivers, e.g., cryptography-based solutions, which unfortunately may not be feasible in practice. This challenge is even more acute in low-end IoT devices. We thus introduce a novel deep learning-based FJ framework that can effectively defeat eavesdropping attacks with imperfect CSI and even without CSI of legitimate channels. In particular, we first develop an autoencoder-based communication architecture with FJ, namely, AEFJ, to jointly maximize the secrecy rate and minimize the block error rate (BLER) at the receiver without requiring perfect CSI of the legitimate channels. In addition, to deal with the case without CSI, we leverage the mutual information neural estimation (MINE) concept and design a MINE-based FJ scheme that can achieve comparable security performance to the conventional FJ methods that require perfect CSI. Extensive simulations in a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system demonstrate that our proposed solution can effectively deal with eavesdropping attacks in various settings. Moreover, the proposed framework can seamlessly integrate MIMO security and detection tasks into a unified end-to-end learning process. This integrated approach can significantly maximize the throughput and minimize the BLER, offering a good solution for enhancing communication security in wireless communication systems. © 2014 IEEE.

Purpose: Watermarking is one of the techniques used to protect multimedia data, and images in particular, from malicious attacks by inserting a signature into these images. However, traditional watermarking schemes encounter limitations for sensitive images such as medical images. Methods: In this work, a robust and blind watermarking approach is proposed to secure medical images exchanged in telemedicine. Marking medical images allows precise authentication of the patient and avoids confusing scans and thus avoiding diagnostic errors that can have serious consequences. In this approach, the frequency content of the image is acquired using three different transforms. Schur decomposition is then applied to the low-frequency sub-bands. Finally, the obtained upper triangular matrix values are modifier to integrate the watermark bits. Result and conclusion: Imperceptibility and robustness experimental results show that the proposed methods adequately maintain a significant quality of watermarked images and are remarkably robust against several conventional attacks. Indeed, the average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) obtained is 44.90 dB which proves that the integration process generates few distortions to the original image. For the robustness, the obtained results show that the watermark is resistant to the most common attacks used in watermarking with a normalized cross correlation rate higher than 0.9 for the majority of the attacks. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical engineering.

The enhancement of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) is required to ensure protection of network resources and services. This is a hot research topic, especially in the presence of advanced intrusions and attacks. This paper provides a comparison between Distributed Cumulative Histogram (DCH) as a Feature Selection (FS) technique, Information Gain Ratio (IGR) FS and wrapper-based FS in terms of accuracy and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The utilization of DCH of the traffic instances in normal and attack cases allows us to compare the traffic charts. We can observe the difference between effective features and less effective ones. We verify the feasibility of using DCH as an FS technique in the field of anomaly detection with just six selected features giving more accurate results with most classifiers compared to the IGR and wrapper-based FS. We applied our experiments on the modern UNSW dataset with the WEKA simulation platform that contains a group of classification, feature reduction and selection techniques. © The Author(s) 2024.
