Biometrics technology has been attracting extensive attention from researchers of personal authentication due to the ever growing demand on access control, public security, forensics and e-banking. Diverse biometric systems have been now widely used in various applications. The palmprint is most popular modality that has the largest shares in the biometrics market. In this paper, an efficient online personal identification system based on palmprint is proposed. Firstly, the palmprint is filtered by the Gabor filter. The real and imaginary responses of the filtering are used to create three different feature vectors. Subsequently, the Hidden Markov Model (HMM), the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and the Radial Basis Function (RBF) are used for modeling and so for classifying the feature vectors. The results of the three classifiers are combined using matching score level fusion strategy. The proposed system is tested and evaluated using PolyU 2D and 3D palmprint database of 250 persons. The obtained experimental results show that the system yields the best performance for identifying palmprint and it is able to provide the highest degree of biometrics-based system security.

Audio-only speaker/speech recognition systems ASR are far from being perfect especially under noisy conditions. Furthermore, it is a known fact that the content of speech can be revealed partially through lip-reading. Human speech perception is bimodal in nature: Humans combine audio and visual information in deciding what has been spoken, especially in noisy environments. In this paper, we describe a speaker identification system where lip information is fused with corresponding speech information from each speaker. The energy, the zero cross ratio (ZCR) and the pitch are used as features for the audio modality. The features for the lip texture modality are 2D-DCT coefficients of the luminance component. Intuitively, we would expect lip information to be somewhat complementary to speech information due to the range of lip movements associated with the production of the corresponding phonemes in speech using a multilayer perceptron classifier.

The objective of this work is to present a signature verification system based on combination of off-line and online systems for managing conflict provided by the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifiers. This system is basically divided into three parts: i) off-line verification stage, ii) on-line verification stage and iii) combination module using Dempster-Shafer theory (DST). The proposed framework allows combining the normalized SVM outputs and uses an estimation technique based on the dissonant model of Appriou to compute the belief assignments. Combination is performed using Dempster-Shafer (DS) rule followed by the likelihood ratio based decision making. Experiments are conducted on the well know NISDCC signature collection using false rejection and false acceptance criteria. The obtained results show that the proposed combination framework using DST yields the best verification accuracy compared to the sum rule even when individual off-line and on-line classifications provide conflicting results.

We present numerical simulations performed with a two-mass model of the vocal folds. We use the model to compute the fundamental frequency, the duty ratio and the intensity of volume velocity as a function of two control parameters: sub-glottal pressure and vocal cords tension. Our results contribute to a better characterization of a now classic vocal-fold model.

We present a fast method for locating iris features in frontal face images based on the Hough transform. The aim of this work is to detect the circles surrounding the exterior iris pattern from a set of facial images. The circular Hough transform is used for this purpose, a first edge detection technique is used for finding the edges in the input image. After the characteristics points of circles are detected and drawn this last on the original image then, the pattern of the iris is extracted.

Biometric systems based on a single source of information suffer from limitations such as the lack of uniqueness, non-universality of the chosen biometric trait, noisy data and spoof attacks. Multibiometrics are relatively new systems that overcome those problems. These systems fuse information from multiple biometric sources in order to achieve better identification performance. In this paper, 2D and 3D palmprint are integrated in order to construct an efficient multibiometric identification system based on matching score level fusion. For that, the texture information is characterized by the rotation invariant VARiance measures (VAR) and compressed using the Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Subsequently, we use the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for modeling the feature vector of each palmprint. Finally, Log-likelihood scores are used for palmprint evaluation. The proposed scheme is tested and evaluated using PolyU 2D-3D palmprint database of 250 users. Our experimental results show the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed system, which brings high identification accuracy rate. © 2011 IEEE.

Reliability and accuracy in personal identification system is a dominant concern to the security world. Biometric has gained much attention in this subject recently. Many types of personal identification systems have been developed, and palmprint identification is one of the emerging technologies. This paper presents a novel biometric technique to automatic personal identification system using multispectral palmprint technology. In this method, each of spectrum images are aligned and then used to extract palmprint features using 1D log-Gabor filter. These features are then examined for their individual and combined performances. Finally, the hamming distance is used for matching of palmprint features. The experimental results showed that the proposed method achieve an excellent identification rate and provide more security.

In many large scale biometric-based recognition problems, knowledge of the limiting capabilities of underlying recognition systems is constrained by a variety of factors including a choice of a source encoding technique, quality, complexity and variability of collected data. In this paper, we propose a novel iris recognition system based-on Independent Component Analysis (ICA) encoding technique, which captures both the second and higher-order statistics and projects the input data onto the basis vectors that are as statistically independent as possible. We apply Flexible-ICA algorithm in the framework of the natural gradient to extract efficient feature vectors by minimizing the mutual information of the output data. The experimental results carried on two different subsets of CASIA V3 iris database show that ICA reduces the processing time and the feature vector length. In addition, ICA has shown an encouraging performance which is comparable to the best iris recognition algorithms found in the literature. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper investigates the influence of GSM speech coding on the performance of a text independent Speaker Recognition System (SRS). The SRS developed perform recognition on reconstructed speech waveform from the coded parameters using Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) technique. The performance evaluation due to the use of the GSM speech coding namely the GSMEFR (Global System Mobile Enhanced Full Rate) codec was conducted, using three transcoded databases, obtained by passing the local ARADIGIT database through the GSM coder/decoder. The recognition evaluation was also conducted using original ARADIGIT sampled at 16 KHz and its 8 KHz downsampled version. The ARADIGIT database consists of 60 speakers (31 male speakers and 29 female speakers) pronouncing the ten Arabic digits five time each. Several experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the degradation introduced by different aspects of the simulated coder. © 2010 IEEE.
