We address, in this work, a new feature generation method for two different approaches of off-line handwritten signature verification (HSV), writer-dependent and writer-independent HSV. The proposed method uses conjointly the contourlet transform and the co-occurence matrix. The contourlet transform allows capturing contour segment directions of the handwritten signature, while the co-occurrence matrix allows describing the number of directions. Experiments are conducted on the well known CEDAR dataset and the classification through the support vector machines (SVM). The obtained results show the effective use of the Contourlet transform for handwritten signature verification comparatively to the state of the art.

We propose in this work a new handwritten digit recognition system based on parallel combination of SVM classifiers for managing conflict provided between their outputs. Firstly, we evaluate different methods of generating features to train the SVM classifiers that operate independently of each other. To improve the performance of the system, the outputs of SVM classifiers are combined through the Dezert-Smarandache theory. The proposed framework allows combining the calibrated SVM outputs issued from a sigmoid transformation and uses an estimation technique based on a supervised model to compute the belief assignments. Decision making is performed by maximizing the new Dezert-Smarandache probability. The performance evaluation of the proposed system is conducted on the well known US Postal Service database. Experimental results show that the proposed combination framework improves the recognition rate even when individual SVM classifiers provide conflicting outputs.

Support vector machines (SVMs) have become an alternative tool for pattern recognitions, and more specifically for Handwritten Signature Verification Systems (HSVS). Usually, the bi-class SVMs (B-SVM) are used for separating between genuine and forged signatures. However, in practice, only genuine signatures are available. In this paper, we investigate the use of one-class SVM (OC-SVM) for handwritten signature verifications. Experimental results conducted on the standard CEDAR database show the effective use of the one-class SVM compared to the bi-class SVM.

This article develops a speaker-dependent Arabic phonemes recognition system using MFCC analysis and the VQ-LBG algorithm. The system is examined with and without vector quantization in order to analyze the effect of compression in an acoustic parameterization phase. Our experimental results show that vector quantization using a codebook of size 16 achieves good results compared to the system without quantization for a majority of the phonemes studied.

In this work, the ITU-T G.729 speech coder is used to encode and decode the speech input for text independent speaker recognition over IP networks. Speaker recognition system was designed to use three kinds of features coefficients extracted in processing phase: (i) the first one is the LFCC coefficients extracted from clean database, (ii) the LFCC features vector extracted from the G729 transcoded database (resynthesized speech), and (iii) the LPCC coefficients calculated directly from the coded parameters embedded in the ITU-T G.729 bitstream. Experiments were performed using the TIMIT database, and the effect of the G729 on speaker recognition performance is investigated. In order to improve recognition accuracy of GMM-UBM used with the G729, speaker recognition using T-norm score normalization was also examined. The speaker recognition was performed using a Gaussian mixture model-universal background model (GMM-UBM) with the LIA SpkDet system based on the ALIZE platform 3. In the emerging method that use the LPCC derived directly from the G729 encoded bit stream, the recognition performances reach to 64% but are still poor compared to the conventional speaker recognition methods or that achieved using G729 resynthesized speech. © 2012 Springer science+Business Media B.V.

Several studies for palmprint-based person identification have focused on the use of palmprint images captured in the visible part of the spectrum. However, to a possible improvement of the existing palmprint systems, the proposed work concerned with the use of infrared palmprint images for the palmprint identification system. For that, a comparison of infrared palmprint images versus gray level and color image is given. At the features-extraction stage the features are generated by the method of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). This feature-extraction technique has been widely used for pattern recognition, as well as in the field of biometrics. The proposed scheme is tested and evaluated using PolyU multispectral palmprint database of 400 users. Our experimental results show that the infrared spectrum achieves the best result. Also, color image present three spectrums, for that, we propose a score level and image level fusion schemes to integrate these colors information.

In this paper, we present an optimized switched split vector quantization (SSVQ) system developed for efficient and robust coding of the speech LPC parameters in terms of line spectral frequencies (LSF). Initially, the aim of this system (called LSF-SSVQ encoder) is to achieve a transparent quantization of wideband speech LSF parameters for ideal transmissions over noiseless channels. Subsequently, our interest was drawn to the improvement of the LSF-SSVQ encoder robustness for real transmissions over a noisy channel. To protect implicitly the transmission indices of our LSF encoders, we developed a non-redundant joint source-channel coding system based on a channel optimized switched split vector quantization technique.

In this paper, we propose a system to recognize handwritten digit strings, which constitutes a difficult task because of overlapping and/or joining of adjacent digits. To resolve this problem, we use a segmentation-recognition of handwritten connected digits based on the oriented sliding window. The proposed approach allows separating adjacent digits according the connection configuration by finding at the same time the interconnection points between adjacent digits and the cutting path. The segmentation-recognition using the global decision module allows the rejection or acceptance of the processed image. Experimental results conducted on the handwritten digit database NIST SD19 show the effective use of the sliding window for segmentation-recognition.

This paper presents the findings of experiments that were performed on a VoWLAN (Voice over WLAN) cell using the IEEE 802.11b standard. The experiments were simulated using OPNET Modeler 14.0 software. The experiments were aimed at finding the maximum number of simultaneous Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) users the VoWLAN cell would support under the G.711 and G.729 codec standards with and without silence suppression. The packetization interval was 10 milliseconds (ms). To determine the capacity of the model under various experiments, we checked three metrics: jitter, delay and packets loss. The findings of the first experiment (without silence suppression) indicated that, the maximum number of simultaneous VoIP users the VoWLAN cell was able to support was 6, using the IEEE 802.11b mode under G.729A codec, which is consistent with recent research findings. The finding of the second experiment (with silence suppression) however, demonstrated that with codec's silence suppression enabled, the maximum number of VoIP users the VoWLAN cell was able to support was 13, using the IEEE 802.11b mode under G.729A codec.

This study is part of adaptive mechanisms research in speech production. We were interested to acoustic variations of the voice message when the speaker is placed in a noisy environment. We propose a methodology to highlight the articulatory strategies adopted by the speaker to adapt to the noisy environment. This methodology consists of two parts: a noise effect analysis on the timing in the one hand and on the frequency envelope of the speech signal in the other. In addition, we also highlighted the strategies adopted in the event of significant decrease of auditory feedback in the presence of noise [1]. The results are considered good because they rejoin those found in literature[1][22]. Furthermore, the methodology proposed in this study can be used in rehabilitation for the deaf (test the degree of hearing loss before and after treatment), in communication systems (level estimation of the signal alteration by noise before its transmission, in coding speech, recognition, synthesis etc...).
