The future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will consist of several tens of telescopes of different mirror sizes. CTA will provide next generation sensitivity to very high energy photons from few tens of GeV to > 100 TeV. Several focal plane instrumentation options are currently being evaluated inside the CTA consortium. In this paper, the current status of the FlashCam prototyping project is described. FlashCam is based on a fully digital camera readout concept and features a clean separation between photon detector plane and signal digitization/triggering electronics.

Audio-only speaker/speech recognition systems ASR are far from being perfect especially under noisy conditions. Furthermore, it is a known fact that the content of speech can be revealed partially through lip-reading. Human speech perception is bimodal in nature: Humans combine audio and visual information in deciding what has been spoken, especially in noisy environments. In this paper, we describe a speaker identification system where lip information is fused with corresponding speech information from each speaker. The energy, the zero cross ratio (ZCR) and the pitch are used as features for the audio modality. The features for the lip texture modality are 2D-DCT coefficients of the luminance component. Intuitively, we would expect lip information to be somewhat complementary to speech information due to the range of lip movements associated with the production of the corresponding phonemes in speech using a multilayer perceptron classifier.

This paper presents a design and measurements of multichannel integrated circuits dedicated to recording of neurobiological signals. 64 recording channels have been implemented in a single chip using a commercially available CMOS 180 nm process. A single recording amplifier consumes only 25 μW from 1.8 V supply and occupies 0.13 mm 2 of the silicon area. Its main parameters such as the low/high cut off frequencies and the voltage gain are controlled thanks to the on-chip register. User is able to change the low cut off frequency in the 60 mHz - 100 Hz range in each channel independently while the high cut off frequency and the voltage gain can be set to 4.7 kHz / 12 kHz and 139 V/V / 1100 V/V respectively. The input referred noise depends on the bandwidth of the recording channel and is equal to 3.7 μV (100 Hz - 12 kHz) or to 7.6 μV (3 Hz - 12 kHz). This paper deals with problems that are present in a multichannel integrated recording electronics for neurobiology experiments such as: ability to record input signals in the frequency range below a single Hz, and the spread of the cut off frequencies from channel to channel in such systems. Up to our knowledge the solution presented in this paper is the first one reporting the multichannel IC that is able both to record extremely low frequency signals in each channel with a small spread of this parameter from channel to channel.

In this paper, an overview of the production and consumption of Kuwait electrical energy, installed capacity and peak loads are presented. The results show that Kuwait has a serious situation because of the electrical energy lacking and load peaking. Based on the fact that Kuwait has enough budgets to transform all the power station powered by oil with renewable energy sources turning to greener Kuwait. The paper also is identifying and analyzing the geographical and temporal variability of solar energy inside Kuwait. The fundamental solar models are modified to estimate and identify daily and hourly solar radiation on horizontal surfaces on the basis of the more readily available meteorological data. The presented results prove that Kuwait has an abundance of solar energy capability in terms of almost cloudless atmosphere for nine months and twelve hours solar time a day over the year. The daily global and monthly averaged solar intensity on horizontal surface at Kuwait area is ranging from 3 Wh/m 2 in winter to 8 kWh/m 2 in summer. Monthly averaged clear sky solar radiation on horizontal surfaces at Kuwait area is ranging from 500 W/m 2 /day to 1042 W/m 2 /day.

This paper studies a vital issue in wireless communications, which is the transmission of images over Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) through the Bluetooth network. It presents a simple method to improve the efficiency of error control code of old Bluetooth versions over mobile WPANs through Interleaved Error Control Code (IECC) technique. The encoded packets are interleaved by simple block interleaver. Also, the paper presents a chaotic interleaving scheme as a tool against bursts of errors which depends on the chaotic Baker map. Also, the paper proposes using the chaotic interleaver instead of traditional block interleaver with Forward Error Control (FEC) scheme. A comparison study between the proposed and standard techniques for image transmission over a correlated fading channel is presented. Simulation results reveal the superiority of the proposed chaotic interleaving scheme to other schemes. Also, the superiority of FEC with proposed chaotic interleaver to the conventional interleavers with enhancing the security level with chaotic interleaving packetby- packet basis.

In this paper, the design of a dual band quadrifilar helical antenna (QHA) is proposed for the radio beacon receiver in the application of the ground station of the low earth orbit (LEO) satellite. The new configuration of the QHA is proposed to achieve the dual operating frequencies (150 MHz and 400 MHz), which it is the combination of two bifilar helical antennas (BHA). The proposed antenna possess the hemispherical radiation pattern, dual-band operation, circular polarization and 2.2 dBic absolute gain. The simulation results are shown to demonstrate the antenna performance.

This paper analyzes the effect of driver size and number of shells on propagation delay for Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) interconnect at 22nm technology node. An equivalent circuit model of MWCNT is used for estimation and analysis of propagation delay. The delay through MWCNT and Cu interconnects are compared for various driver sizes and number of MWCNT shells. The SPICE simulation results show that the MWCNT interconnect has lower propagation delay than Cu interconnects. The delay ratio of MWCNT to Cu decreases with increase in length for different driver size and number of MWCNT shells. However, the delay ratio increases with reduction in number of MWCNT shells. MWCNT is considered to be potential alternative to copper interconnects in future. MWCNT provides significant improvement in propagation delay performance over Copper for long (global) interconnects.

This article presents a 3D magnetotransistor for detecting magnetic field in three dimensions (B X , B Y , and B Z ) by relying on the difference between base and collector currents (ΔI CB ). This device used low biasing current. It was designed and fabricated using CMOS fabrication technology. The device structure consisted of one emitter, 4 collectors and 4 bases. LOCOS oxide was grown to surround the emitter area to limit lateral carrier loss, and therefore reducing the overall biasing current. The experiment showed that, at 0.2 mA of biasing current, the BX, BY and BZ direction sensitivity to magnetic field within the range of 0 - 400 mT are 0.05, 0.07 and 0.145 mV/mT, respectively.

Latent semantic indexing (LSI) is commonly used to match queries to documents in information retrieval (IR) applications. It has been shown to improve the retrieval performance, as it can deal with synonymy and polysemy problems. This paper proposes a hybrid approach which can improve result accuracy significantly. Evaluation of the approach based on using the Haar wavelet transform (HWT) as a preprocessing step for the singular value decomposition (SVD) in the LSI system is presented, using Donoho's thresholding with the transformation in HWT. Furthermore, the effect of different levels of decomposition in the HWT process is investigated. The experimental results presented in the paper confirm a significant improvement in performance by applying the HWT as a preprocessing step using Donoho's thresholding.
