The overall performance of any iris recognition system relies on the performance of its components, which are preprocessing, feature extraction and matching. Feature extraction is the important step of such recognition system, but it is strongly dependent on the pre-processing step that is consisting of localising and normalising the iris. In this paper, Independent Component Analysis (ICA), which is a recently developed statistical method for data analysis, is applied for extracting the features for iris region of interest that are statistically independent. Based on some mathematical criteria, the performance of ICA is evaluated by using two different subsets of CASIA-V3 iris image database. The obtained results are convincing and some future improved research works are subsequently envisaged.

Automatic personal identification using biometric information is playing a more and more important role in applications such as public security, access control, banking, etc. Palmprint identification is a subcategory of biometrics identification, which can efficiently used to identify the people. It is for this reason that palmprint-based identification is becoming increasingly popularity in recent years. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for palmprint identification using the multi-variate Gaussian Probability Density Function (GPDF) and two-dimensional Block based Discrete Cosine Transform (2D-BDCT). In this method, a palmprint is firstly divided into overlapping and equal-sized blocks, and then, applies the discrete cosine transform over each block. By using zigzag scan order (starting at the top-left) each transform block is reordered to produce the observation vector. Subsequently, we use the Gaussian probability density function for modeling the feature vector of each palmprint. Finally, Log-likelihood scores are used for palmprint matching. The proposed scheme is validated for their efficacy on PolyU palmprint database of 100 users. Our experimental results show the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed approach, which brings both high identification accuracy rate.

A low-level logic fault test simulation environment for embedded systems directed specifically towards application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and intellectual property (IP) cores is proposed in the paper. The developed simulation environment emulates a typical builtin self-testing (BIST) architecture with automatic test pattern generator (ATPG) that sends its outputs to a circuit (core) under test (CUT) and the output streams from the CUT are fed into an output response analyzer (ORA). The paper delineates the development of the test architecture, test application and fault injection including the relevance of the logic fault *** great details. Some results on simulation on specific IP cores designed using combinations from ISCAS 85 combinational and ISCAS 89 sequential benchmark circuits are provided as well for evaluation.

Traffic congestion is the cause of pollution and economic loss. The Real time traffic state report can alleviate this problem by assisting drivers for route planning and choosing unblocked roads. More traffic information could lead to more accurate route planning and greater awareness of traffic situations and road conditions for drivers. However, investment into sensor infrastructure for small minor roads is rarely available. In this paper, we present a cost efficient approach to compute real time traffic congestion degrees for non-sensor infrastructure roads, such as small minor roads, based on context fusion and context reasoning method. Our framework intends to utilize real time acquirable context instead of relying on traffic sensory data which made our approach suitable for insufficient sensor infrastructure environment. The evaluation throughout several experimentations conducted in Bangkok has proven the feasibility of our approach. Besides, the experimental result indicated that the methodology of our experiment can be used as an alternative cost efficient tool for infrastructure investment decision making.

This paper proposes a low-voltage linear operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) in a 0.35-μm CMOS process. The proposed OTA employs a bulk-driven differential input stage with resistive source degeneration and the flipped-voltage follower topology to achieve high linearity under low power supply voltage. The proposed OTA dissipates 0.8 μW from a single 0.8-V power supply voltage. Simulation results with showed that a linear differential input voltage range of 470 mV was achieved with less than 1% total harmonic distortion.

Polishing is a highly skilled manufacturing process with a lot of constraint and interaction with environment. Unfortunately, manual polishing process takes time consuming of the total manufacturing time and takes a significant cost. On top of that, undesired working condition exists due to dust and noise and next it is quite difficult to find skilled technicians. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an automation system on the polishing process. One of the automation systems that are often developed by the industry is the use of robots. The goal is to handle the repetitive work that humans are not able to do so. In general, the purpose of polishing is to get the uniform surface roughness distributed evenly throughout part's surface. This research combines computer vision and robotics systems to overcome the problems arising in the polishing process. Vision system is used to measure surface defect that divide into several categories. The surface data is learned using artificial neural networks then give the decisions to move the actuator on robot. Parameters that developed in this system are force and time polishing which has a significant effect on the polishing process. Therefore, this system studies the characteristics of surface defects before the given action with different value of force and polishing time, and then compared with surface defects after given the action. Results obtained show that it is possible to obtain surface parameters using vision-based methods with a certain limit of accuracy. However, there are some advantages using this system, including faster polishing time, simpler quality inspection, and more evenly surface roughness result compared with manual polishing. The overall results of this research would encourage further developments to achieve robust computer vision technique for robotic polishing application.

Visual image retrieval systems imply novel approaches to improve their performance. Search methods require mathematical formalism for feature extraction of multi medial data. Euclidean distance is not enough approach for extracting similarity between images. Radial basis function provides necessary optimization for similarity measures when query image is used as reference. This paper explains a novel method exploiting radial basis function applied for visual image retrieval area. The goal of the approach is the searching process optimization for image retrieval which is obtained results reveal interesting conclusions about advantages of the proposed method even conventional similarity measurement approaches used in content based retrieval area.

In this paper, the e-JIKEI Network project, a project for creating community safety with present day technology, is reviewed. With the e-JIKEI Network, each individual watches around his/her house using cameras as his/her eyes, a computer as his/her brain, and software. For privacy protection, we propose the e-JIKEI with Privacy Protection, in which people who own and manage images (the owner) and people who have the right to view the images (the viewer) are separated by the encryption of the images. In order to evaluate our concept, social experiments have been performed. The present status and future prospects have been discussed in detail.

This paper describes a novel operationality improvement control for electric power assisted wheelchairs. "Electric power assisted wheelchair" which assists the driving force by electric motors is expected to be widely used as a mobility support system for elderly people and disabled people, however, the performance of the straight and circular road driving must be further improved because the two wheels drive independently. This paper proposes a novel operationality improvement control by fuzzy algorithm to realize the stable driving on straight and circular roads. The suitable assisted torque of the right and left wheels is determined, by fuzzy algorithm based on the posture angular velocity, the posture angle of the wheelchair, the human input torque proportion and the total human torque of the right and left wheels. Some experiments on the practical roads show the effectiveness of the proposed control system. © 2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
